Yep I remember iy and I am sure it was still there around 1990. We used to go after nightclubs for a burger or a bacon sandwich

We always used to drive up there.

My god,now that does bring back memories,Greasy Veras in the seventies was the place to go to. We used to park up and spend at least an hour there in the early hours chatting away, with a burger or two.

I lived at Pitsmoor in the 70s and passed it on the way home from the night clubs and it was hard to walk past that aroma full of ale.
It was a blue van then, is it still the same i wonder.

Ah! Greasy Vera's! Meeting place for policemen, bikers, bands (and their roadies), and all sorts of other undesirables! :-)
Spent many a happy hour there after a gig. Best cheesburgers in the world!

Ah....the sweet smell of frying bacon wafting down pitsmoor. The council ought to put a plaque up on the site of vera's van. What a place. 2am on a warm summer night, with a bacon and tomato butty (or 2 ) and a mug of tea. As close to heaven on earth as you are likely to get. I went there with my missus the night we met. Weve been married 22 years now.

There was a big feature in the paper a few months ago. John left after many years and the business was taken over.

Sass and I used to call there every weekend after he'd finished DJing at the Corporation. It was the first 'meal' he took me out to. Ahhh, so romantic. My little car was always caked in mud after bumping it up the muddy track.

John has retired but Greasy's is still going strong thanks to a couple that has taken it over. There is also a porta cabin to sit in now so no more juggling with your cuppa and cheggburger!

When Mr Talker was the bouncer at the wig and pen (and I worked there as casual bar staff), we lived in Woodside (Top of pitsmoor, near christchurch) Just up the hill from GV's van.

Mr Talker would treat us to a supper of sausage and tomato butties from GV or GG's when he came home at about 1/2 am. If the staff stopped off at gg's, I would get the treat of a slab of lemon meringue pie, instead.... yum!

Hi,

Greasy Vera's van is on Swinton Street which is at the bottom of Pitsmoor Road near the junction of Mowbury st., Nursery St and Corporation st.

I don't think it's open. I have driven past and not noticed open for a long time. The van is still there.

I used to like the Cheggburgers that they did.

I thought they moved into that cafe near Norfolk Bridge, next to the newsagents?

Haven't been down for years so could be well off track there.

No that's gg's..used to be a cber meeting place sort of thing.!

Greasy vera's van is still there, but it's no longer open i think.!
That van should be made a ward of court and never be removed.!

Oh happy days.

Hi John,

At the moment the van is staying put! For the simple reason that it is well known for being what it is!
There will be a portacabin for customers to use. There was one there originally until it was stolen. Yes a portscabin was stolen! The plan is to use the portacabin to also cook the food in eventually too.

Just a quick note to ask if anyone has any information on the arson and theft of greasy vera's?
Any information would be useful.

Wow..Greasy Veras made a mean cheggburger yes it was mi fav:-)
i used to live on the flats opposite the railway years ago i could see it open mos nights.
Many a time ive nipped down there at 3am in the morning for a packet of fags and a sarnie:-)
They moved round the back onto that little car park , took over by John but alas its no more,bless:-(
I still go past there to get home and the van is still there but lookin a bit worse for wear.
Yes i also remember ggs b4 he moved to that cabin thingy @Norfolk Bridge ...that more or less killed it off.
Most Of Sheffields C.B.ers went there!
Your tea and bacon sarnie with a slice of that legendary lemon meringue tasted a lot better outdoors somehow:-)
Now its all kebab shops .... yuk .... come back gordons van all is forgiven!!!

It should be in Weston Park Museum with a waxwork Vera inside, holding a plastic cheeseburger.

I agree. It's a part of Sheffields history. I'd love to know if anyones got some old pictures of the place. I only went a couple of times after I passed my driving test. It has stuck in my mind though.
