View Full Version : Rockers night out - where to go?
JarvisCocker 16-03-2010, 14:33 Hi all,
It's my friends birthday in April and this year she has decided to throw all caution to the wind and have a full day sesh, like we used to in the good ol' days!! haha.
The good old days were meeting in the Hornblower sat afternoon, quiz in the Mailcoach, pub crawl down West Street, the Yorkshireman, Sportsman, Wap then back to either Yorkshireman or Sportsman for last orders, ending up in Rebels. :D
So as most have the places are sadly now gone, apart from The Dove and Rainbow and The Nelson are there any decent rock pubs left in Sheffield? Or are we going to be left bitterly dissapointed, sobbing into our drinks and reminiscing about the good ol's days :hihi:
Mentholman 16-03-2010, 18:22 Well we have DJ Lez of Rebels fame, DJing at Mentholman's at West Street Live every Friday before, between and after the live rock cover band. Open 7pm til 2am.
Free entry, loooads of drinks offers, no dress code, no n*bheads and draught Hobgoblin and Old Rosie. :D
melthebell 16-03-2010, 18:25 sounds like a good night that mentholman, might have to try it out one friday when im down sheff, not the next time mind im afraid my friday - sunday is already all booked up and full

DJ lez was the worst DJ in Rebels.
DJ lez was the worst DJ in Rebels.
you're entitled to your view of course but one person's opinion hardly counts as a consensus, there's a lot of love and respect for him out there.

That sounds like my nights out when I was about 17! :)
I can recommend West St Live. Try a shot called I See Dead People. Watching my mate down one of those was bloody hilarious!

Sounds great that, but we're out SATURDAY, not Friday. :(
Come on, theres got to be something in town more than trendy bars, hasn't there?!

You could always end up in corp afterwards - unless it's changed, saturdays always used to cater for slightly older rock tastes.
JarvisCocker 17-03-2010, 10:54 Oh yes, I forgot about the Corp, last time I did try it in there it was rubbish! Will more than likely end up in West Street Live later on..... any other pub suggestions?
Fraid its pretty much just The Nelson and Dove N Rainbow these days.
And Lez isn't that bad, he just plays music far far far too loud in the Nelson on Saturday nights

Arrrr it's so sad theres no rock scene anymore :( It's not going to be much of a pub crawl with 2 pubs to choose from.

JarvisCocker 17-03-2010, 13:08 Not this saturday no, it's April 10th :)
Whats The Sportsman like these days? Crap?
Yea like mine too.
Lovin your username btw:D
Ta :) It's a long story!
I miss rebels. And the Roxy's rock night. The Nelson used to be good, whatever it was called before. Was great - Sportsman, Wap, Roxys. Ah youth!!
PS WSL is good friday and saturday, and has live music both nights, and good drinks. I'd recommend maybe starting at Dove and Rainbow, up to WSL, maybe a wander down west st to Frog and Parrot, down to Dev Cat and then stay there. Last two aren't really rock, but are good non chav pubs normally!
nefertari 17-03-2010, 18:56 I was trying to remember what the Nelson used to be called the other day, was it The Hind ?
I was trying to remember what the Nelson used to be called the other day, was it The Hind ?
I think it was something before that but I can't remember. It did newky brown for £1 a bottle. Quality.
NoddyHolder 17-03-2010, 19:26 Well if its the Dove and Rainbow thats carrying the flag thats it then its time to stop in and get the carpet slippers out
Well if its the Dove and Rainbow thats carrying the flag thats it then its time to stop in and get the carpet slippers out
A night out is what you make it. If you go out with that attitude, you'll have a crap night. Go have fun and enjoy it, I say! :):)

Yep hind and also grape treaders and hop pickers as i recall, bloody h**l seems a long time ago LOL

Likewise with the museum,Three tuns (both where orchard square is now) The red lion before concerts at the city hall and The foresters on the corner of division street.
Shaken up 18-03-2010, 09:27 The Nelson has to be the place.
Better than all the rest. as Tina Turner would say.!!

Its still a rock bar at weekends - go in and judge for yourself....
nefertari 18-03-2010, 11:10 We used to go in the Foresters for one or two early on usually. We used to say it was like sitting in someones front room :hihi:
Remember the guy who workied behind the bar and when washing the glasses wore Marilgods, Hey up Marigold !

Me too. Great times, fun dressing up, awsome atmosphere, good music, massive hair. Went from 1986 - 1995. Now feeling like a fat old fart these days and can only daydream about the days of goth/glam rock heaven.
JarvisCocker 19-03-2010, 20:31 Its still a rock bar at weekends - go in and judge for yourself....
I will. Was just asking what it's like cos not been in for ages. Is Trish still knocking about, bless her. She used to scare me when I first went in rebs!
SUNDAY 28TH MARCH @ WEST ST LIVE
FREE ENTRY
THIS IS SPINAL PAP
A tribute to the cult 80's film "This Is Spinal Tap"
From the depths of hell comes a tribute band like no other. Blazing on stage with an energy more rampant than a mongoose making love to a wilder beast, this band will set your blood pumping and your trousers expanding! This will be one show not to miss, from the rock anthems of "Tonight were gonna rock you" to the more sophisticated sound of "Sex Farm", all the hits are here! .... Rest assured this bands goes to eleven. "
Gonna be a wicked night !
Ghostrider 22-03-2010, 11:04 I will. Was just asking what it's like cos not been in for ages. Is Trish still knocking about, bless her. She used to scare me when I first went in rebs!
Its rock on Friday night from 8pm and Saturdays from 4pm till 1am..
Trish is still around and hasnt changed at all - I remember the first time I met her in rebels - scared the hell out of me as well :hihi:
Powerage 23-03-2010, 12:29 Sportsman is ok sometimes its full and sometimes empty but the music is pretty good.
My advice would be avoid WSL on Saturday it gets full of chavs and the bands are usually crap.
The best are Dove n Rainbow, Sportsman and Nelson followed by the Corp.

Yes Trish is still about but she normally only goes in the Corp Saturdays.
She can sometimes be found in WSL on Fridays as well.
She hasn't changed a bit ;)
Sorry quoted wrong post was meant to answer Jarvis Cocker:)
JarvisCocker 23-03-2010, 12:56 Thanks Powerage and Ghostrider, got a little plan forming in my head now! I think we'll have to go in The Sportsman for old times sake.
Whats happening with The Casbah? Is that still on the go. I know it went really downhill and people stopped going in and I know it was supposed to be pulled down with the redevelopment going on round there. As thats all on hold have the owners of The Casbah done anything to get it back to what it used to be? Had some great nights in there after Rebs closed.
goldenfleece 23-03-2010, 13:01 Times have indeed changed a lot in Sheffield since the 'glory days' of the Wapanetake, Buccaneer, Rebels, ET AL.
However, a good time is still on the menu, The Dove and Rainbow still rocks loud N proud, and Corporation is still THE only place to be seen on a Friday/Saturday night if you part of the rock scene here.....
the times may have changed, but having fun has not.....
Sportsman is ok sometimes its full and sometimes empty but the music is pretty good.

one person's opinion re bands and you're entitled to it (though I couldn't disagree more of course!), but I must take umbridge with your description that we get full of chavs on Saturdays. Just because our Saturdays aren't aimed exclusively at rockers, people of a certain age and other people who only like cheesy hard rock and precious little else beyond that doesn't mean we attract uncouth people, our bouncers keep them out. I'd actually say we get more of a younger demographic in on Saturdays than Fridays, but that's entirely our intention, pleasing two different markets on our two different weekend nights. It's what keeps us afloat as a business.
^^ Okay - 'umbridge' is a character from Harry Potter. Do you mean 'umbrage'? :p
Truth is - for real 80s rock/metal your only bet is the Nelson followed by Corp on a saturday night. Everywhere else, including places like the Casbah, you are subjected to a barrage of bands like Disturbed and System of a Down, which I'm guessing you are not looking for. The great thing about Corp is, for every Rage Against the Machine type track they play, there's always a Whitesnake or Tyketto song that can put you in a good mood again - and as for the Nelson, the DJ there is very accomodating with requests.
WSL is a great venue that showcases some great bands, but I wouldn't go there for the DJ alone. And as for attracting 'uncouth' people - I *have* been there and observed this but being situated bang smack in the middle of West Street - what do you expect!
I went to trad rock night at corp a few months ago with some folk I used to go to rebels with many years ago.. it was slightly surreal seeing all these faces from 20 yrs ago all still wearing the same clothes and dancing to the same tunes.. quite entertaining for a night.. but a bit like the twilight zone!
Can you imagine going to Rebels in 1988 and it being full of folk still dressed like it was 1966 and only dancing to 1960s tunes..?

Your pedantry is such a sexy quality, and I of course take no umbrage (got it right this time!) with it and doff my cap to you :-P
As you rightly say, given our location on West St the odd miscreant is inevitable but our doorstaff always deal with them swiftly and safely and most get turned away at the door.
For the previous poster to state we're full of "chavs" on Saturdays is incredibly harsh, akin to saying we're full of "smellies" on Fridays because we get a lot of rock and metal fans in for the music we put on then. We get a wide cross section of people in both nights but I suppose the general truth of the matter is that we largely get a bit of a younger crowd in on our Saturdays that are more indie orientated and 60s/70s/80s/90s pop orientated than our core customer base on the rockier Fridays. This dynamic of offering different entertainment on each respective weekend night has been really working for us as a business for quite some time now and we're more than happily going to continue with it for some time to come.
Yeah - I do think it's a bit harsh - especially because you can't just go 'oh you can't come in here, you're a chav' or something to that effect. Think you're doing a great job with the bands though *high five*

two massive rock gigs in May that we're looking foward to: Shrine of the Monkey album launch on Friday 21st May- A set of their own stuff early on followed by an epic set of rock covers! Then the week after on Friday 28th May the majestic Blackout return to rock out in spectacular fashion!

Too true we are off to rhodes in june for this
www.classicrocktours.com
You can see most of the bands locally from time to time and they are very good. You can check most of them out on you tube or their websites and the price to see them is about the same as entry to a nightclub.
Ok they are tribute bands but a great night out bringing back memories of the penthouse, rebels, dollars, wap, corp etc and you also see people you haven't seen for years(although grey or bald in most of us)

That is fantastic!
There's nothing better than getting out and doing what you like. Love that you're making it happen. It's too easy to make excuses and act like life won't let you do it. I say, you get one go, make it good.

Also got 2 nights on the trot at wadsley bridge wmc, tonight is a Bulgarian rock band called MR vagabond (not seen them yet) and tomorrow it's rock legacy who i have seen a few times.
Also at bellhouse wmc tonight are Whizz kid top band seen them loads of times so in my eyes(although may be a bit blurry come sunday morning but heh what's new lol) if you want to rock you still can most weekends.
OK some may be put off with them playing wmc but these this weekend are all free and you get cheaper and better quality drinks than nightclubs.
Try it one night you may be very surprised it keeps us rockin' and i'm nearly at the dreaded 50 :D

Too right Vertigo the latest album is fantastic really addictive, the more you listen to it the better it get's, for a sampler of the album
www.taras-secret.com
The more you go out and try other bands rather than paying a fortune to see the mainstream stadium bands (which i also do ) This band rocks and write their own stuff as well as doing covers at certain gigs.
MattParker 27-03-2010, 01:01 DJ lez was the worst DJ in Rebels.
Wrong wrong wrong.
I remember Lez from Rebels, Hadleys in Rotherham, Roxy and CRB and he was one of the best.
Too many DJs are arrogant about what they play and will only spin either tunes they like or tunes they think are popular........my recent experience with the current rock dinosaur at the Casbah being one of those instances.
Lez on the other hand would play what you fetched with you at the drop of a hat cos he was open minded and didn`t have his head up his arse.

That's true. Those days do seem a lifetime away though and I do miss them. It used to take me an hour to get my hair to stand upright and I just loved getting dressed up. I was so young, thin and VERY tall. Ahh well, I AM still tall but youth and an ironing board stomach are just distant memories. I was around at the same time as Trish - remember she always stood by the centre pillar nearest the bar in Rebels. At Roxys everyone always seemed to have their own favourite spot as well, and the same people would be there every time. I seemed to have morphed from a wild Rock chic into a middle aged Mother worrying about my own teenage daughter, my mortgage payments and divorce. Oh my god I need to sort this out - where's the Sportsman and what is the best night to go on?

Oh that sounds familiar...an hour to do the hair!! I used to take that long in the late 80s, backcombing my hair to within an inch of it's life then spraying it with a whole can of Insette. I got stared at no end but i didn't care i loved it :hihi::headbang:

I know that world all too well--went through it a few years back. Rest assured the best times of your life will start when you come out the other side. There's nothing better than getting a fresh start and being able to have your life the way you want it to be.

I think I'll go for the Friday one next time my kiddies are off with their father at the end of this month. Where's the best club to go on afterwards? I feel a night of heavy rock, heavy drinking and s**t loads of fun are in order right about now!!

That has to be corp, its really the only rock club in the area now (the last few times I have been to casbah, its been mainly indie :gag:)
There has now been a change at the sportsman, on fridays its now 70's - 2000's with classic rock thrown in (due to popular demand)
However, saturdays is still all rock, mainly classic, with up to date stuff thrown in as well :headbang:
Haldamir 10-04-2010, 12:43 My mates and I used to do The Sportsman regularly until a couple of years ago, around the time they got the DJ in for Saturday evenings. The setlist was okay, but the stuff was played way too loud. I miss the old rickety jukebox they had *sobs*.
Nowadays, we tend to go the Nelson or West Street Live. The former is better mid-week (in my opinion). On Saturday's its quite chilled out upstairs, though the music is a little patchy. Downstairs is pretty awesome but christ they do play it too loud.
West Street Live I used to dislike after the odd night out a few years back where it seemed to get filled with pretentious indie types. Recently though, the Saturday evenings have been pretty good. The live bands vary in quality, but the DJ before/in-between/after is usually quality.
Casbah is almost always better on a Wednesday, unless they have the young long haired DJ downstairs - he'll literally play anything if he's got it. I remember him playing 'White Walls' by Between The Buried and Me (14 minute prog death metal song), because I mentioned in passing that I quite liked prog. :P
Sheffield could really do with one or two more rock bars in town, but what we have got isn't bad at all.
goldenfleece 12-04-2010, 14:09 Sheffield could really do with one or two more rock bars in town, but what we have got isn't bad at all.
More??? Any more and I think the whole scene would spread itself to thinly......just enough at the present IMO.....

Really? At what time? Last time we went in there on a Wednesday there was only about 12 in there. This was midnight ish.
A mate of mine got them to play Britney as it was so empty. I don't talk to him now that he's defiled the place.

Nothing wrong with some Britney!!
Laast time I went in it was a Wednesday night, also about midnight, and about 10 people in, including the bar staff! The 'DJ' was spinning some wierd r & b stuff......I checked out the lack of special offers at the bar and went somewhere else.....
Is there somewhere to stash your jacket at the Corp?

Laast time I went in it was a Wednesday night, also about midnight, and about 10 people in, including the bar staff! The 'DJ' was spinning some wierd r & b stuff......I checked out the lack of special offers at the bar and went somewhere else.....
Is that r&b in the Rhythm and Blues sense, or the modern meaning? If it's the former I might go!

There's a cloakroom near the stairs I seem to remember. I don't wear a jacket there, just go with people who do :)
If you're looking for a good metal gig, on thursday - Death Rides a Horse/ Soul Shredder/Girlspit/Junction 31 at The Boardwalk - is likely to be heavy!

MuteWitness 07-06-2010, 15:20 Whats the best place for each night of the week ?
I have to say that for the majority of the week the Dove N Rainbow is the place to be. Seems to be much busier than the Nelson these days, was in there last night and there were quite a few people in there. Enjoyed a damn good pint of Hobgoblin as well.

think you might be right about mid week, but on fri and sat id say the nelson has more in. the nelson seems to have more of an "rock" atmosphere about the place too, but music can be way to loud for my ears, is why we generally meet in the dove (or if the music/band is too loud there when we get in, the bankers) for a quick drink, sit down and a chat. not sure i could spend the whole night in just one of the places, both have there good points but i can only put up with the bad points for so long before wanting to move on.
OMG - I'd never have guessed you were a rocker JC!
*pines for roxy mondays and saturday nights at rebels* :(
there's a few other faces I'm surprised to see in this thread too!
... and only an hour to do your hair?... If I was going out on saturday, I'd wash it Thursday to start the process. It just wouldn't go right without the build up of glue for a couple of days before!!
nefertari 09-06-2010, 13:12 Another one here Strix :D and I pine for those nights in rebels and Mondays in roxys
Sometimes it freaks me out wondering if there are people posting here who I once knew! :hihi:
