Do you visit any company, firm, place etc. regularly and find a certain member of staff there to be really nice and talkative or helpful and kind??
Now's your chance to praise them on here, I'll go first then:

The tall guy, Ronian Video - Fir Vale. I always seem to have the funniest conversations with him but as yet have no idea what he's called - top bloke, gets my vote

Julia at Gash (I believe she's the founder/proprietor) is always very chatty, nice and really helpful- I think she's my top favourite in Sheffield

The couple that work at the newsagents (Carousel news?) opposite Spar on Division St are fab, which is remarkable because I only see them in the a.m. on the way to work and I'm not a morning person, yet they manage to be consistently lovely in the morning...

The bar staff of the Dev Cat = v v good

Hmmm am I allowed to say that I would never in a million years nominate about 95% of the staff in West St Tescos? Sooooo unhelpful, rude, discourteous, generally a bunch of miserable so-and-so's really- get a different job if it drags you down that much! A v small number of employees there are actually civilised to you.

For me it has to be the girl who works behind the bar at The Bluewater pub,

She always says hello to me, and asks how I am, she knows what drink I have, and even when I havent been down for ages and ages she can still remember ... amazing.

Not as though I do go drinking much :D

On the slant of pub staff, I'd like to nominate Ken - the landlord of The Loyal Trooper at South Anston.

Both from a customer & ex-employee point of view.

Top bloke

Good well kept pint of Tetleys too

I nominate Darren who owns and runs the barbershop at Kiveton Park near the corner of Hard Lane.

Although I don't get to go in as much as I used to, he still remembers stuff as if we last chatted yesterday. And considering he has a queue of people well into double figures waiting to get into his shop at 7am every morning!

The chaps at Bardwell's are also very decent folk.

There is a bus driver on the Yorkshire Terrier 52 route that is absolutely sound. Hes in his late forties with glasses and dark hair and at first glance seems mad as a hatter, but hes always smiling, helpful, chatty and nice to everyone who gets on the bus.

I like Reg at bardwells electronic shop on Abbeydale road. The stocky bloke. He calls a spade a spade, is a good joker and takes no s**t from anyone. My mate saw him once pull a shoplifter over the counter by his collar and scared the bejesus out of him..

I once went in with my motorbike helmet on and he put both his hands over his mouth and shouted back to me..

He has glued coins on the floor, and had a rag to tear behind the counter, and if anyone bent over to pick one up he tore the rag to make you think you had torn your trousers. Those coins have been there so long, they look like silver disks as people's feet have worn all the numbers off them.

Susa, I think he comes in every once in a while now. I always seem to bump into him though - he's been there years and if you ever get chatting to him, he has a really dry sense of humour.

Also, I must mention - the recently retired Barbara Watkinson from Socketts, very kind, generous and helpful lady - always had time for her customers.

Does anybody know the lollypop lady who works at the crossing next to the 'Number One' Bakery on Owler Lane?? She must have been doing this job now for over 30 years! She also deserves a mention too.

The guy who collects trolleys outside the Infirmary Road Tesco. When shopping with little ones he fetches a trolly out for you and puts the brake on, open the seat and dries it for you too, and on the way out he sneaks up behind you as you're getting the baby back into the car to ask where you would like him to put your shopping, before taking your trolley back too! The world could use a few (thousand) more of him.

I have a few people to 'big up' on this thread!

The entire staff of Scrivens opticians on Pinstone Street who greet me like a friend and never have to ask my name when I collect my contact lenses.

Jill, the Customer Service Manager at Asda Handsworth who I once had a real pop at when I wasn't pleased, but who always says hello whenever I call in. Also Tracey and Pretti who work checkouts at nights.

Finally, Vicki who used to work on the cloakroom at Poptastic when it was at the City Hall, who never got tired of me losing my coat ticket and telling her I loved her when I'd had one-too-many drinks!

I'm sue there's more, but I can't remember at this late hour!

Mrs Nirmal @ Nirmal's! She's fantastic and manages to give us money off, and free cinema tickets everytime we go in! She's fantastic!

The 2 guys who run the cook shop on Abbeydale Road.

It is impossible to just nip in, buy and get back out. I like to reserve at least 40mins to discuss the best casserole dish for my needs and a general chat on how life is going..

And my local post office. That's about 30 mins to buy a stamp.

The guy who washes my hair at the hairdressers. He practises his head massages out on me for free. He's improving but I'll never tell him that - let him think he needs the practise.

Dilys at WH Smith. She has assisted me 3 times and I'll never forget her name and smile.

For quite sometime I have generally hated going into Sainsbury's on the Moor. They seem to take staff off just in time for everyone shopping on their way home at 6pm to have to queue.

However over the past few months our shopping experience has been brightened by one of the most pleasant JS staff I've met in years. (I was 'always' pleasant when I was a trolley boy back in the day).

So a big up to Lauren, who shouldn't worry about failing her exams she's too bright to get stuck behind a checkout for the rest of her life.

Hard one this. I've been racking my brains and then realised it is glaringly obvious: my GP, for her encouragement over the past few years with one thing or another and most recently my voice loss. Those 7 minute appointments dont exist in her book. She has always given me as much time as I needed for the issues in hand at any given time. And she's like that with all of her patients. A very rare gem in this day and age.

Nearly all the nurses I've met at the Hallamshire over the years have been lovely, kind people who've gone out of their way to be helpful and supportive. I'm very grateful to you all, Sue, cheers!

There's always the odd exception, but a really big Thank You to the nurses at the Hallamshire

The Asian taxi-drivers who live with their families on Clarke Square, off London Road, are truely top blokes. They once spent nearly two hours cheerfully changing a particualrly tricky car tire for me, and pumping up the spare, even though it was snowing. Then they seemed genuinely touched when I got them a box of Roses as a thank-you.

The landlord and lady at the Cremorne are also lovely folk.

I hope that you people tell the nominees exactly how much you think of them!

I worked in a pub near my parents house in Chinley for 2 years before coming to uni, and I have done a fair number of shifts since moving away, and I had something brought home to me on Monday night when I was working there on the evening shift...

As a group of four were leaving, one of the men said to me "Thank you so much, the meal was excellent, and so was the service - you have an excellent manner." This was the first time anybody had complemented the service to me - everybody comments on how talented the chef/landlady is in the kitchen, many people reccomend the place to their friends, and I always get good tips, but this was the first time anybody had actually said that I was good at my job (apart from drunken old Mr Smith at the end of the bar but he doesn't count!!!)

So please make sure you tell these people that you appreciate their efforts - it certainly made my day!

She is a little star isn't she?

The first time I 'discovered' Dilys was when I was wandering gormlessly wanting a book. I did not know the title or the author. But knew the subject matter. She asked if she could help. Off she trotted into the back of the store. And hey presto reappeared with exactly what I needed. Opened up a till point to serve me so I didn't have to join the queue and was just jolly lovely.

I always find it brightens my day when I have dealings with friendly staff and if I have a good experience I'm far more likely to go back to that establishment. Two places i learnt to avoid were the Safeway at Meadowhead and at the bottom of Ecclesall road, never ever found there staff friendly or helpful.
However nominations would have to be the nurses at the hallamshire and the cleaning staff on P1. The girls at the sandwich shop near the newsagents on Woodseats road and a particular favorite of mine another nurse Gill who works on cardiac care at the Northern general. I've never had dealings with her in her official capacity but I do know she is very good at her job, knowledgable, experienced and very good at putting people at their ease.
The staff at Tesco's on Abbeydale road are a likeable bunch as well with some real characters.

Has to be Peter Mann and his team at JH Mann fishmongers in Hillsboro'- absolutely outstanding old fashioned service - they allways make you feel hugely welcome and it's "sir" or "madam" all the way, unless they know you by name as they do so many of their customers. For those of you who don't know, he's the only member of staff who would dress up as spderman when they had a promotion on. He was the weediest converse wearing latex clad superhero ever, and he loved every minute of it.

I'd also rate the staff at Marcos@Milanos who are very professional and friendly, the Virgin Gym staff who are full of enthusiasm and smiles and Mr Goode who owns one of the reclaimation shops on Abbeydale road.. who is a right character.. and always very helpful.

oooh nearly forgot.. the man who stripped our pine doors for us - Nev of Sharrowvale Stripping who is an absolute star... full of interesting stories - usually ends up round our house for at least an hour everytime he drops a door off! He also got my climber boyfriend a really cool rare climbing book as a pressie out of the blue. Soooo thoughtful!

for me, all the guys in bardwell's are top banana, knowledgeable, friendly, humourous, but straight forward and most importantly, they arent out to make a fast buck by selling you stuff you dont need.

Neil and Gary in the Cask and Cutler make that for me my favourite sheffield pub by a country mile, the beer is kept with love and is WITHOUT EXCEPTION fantastic. The atmosphere thanks to the no jukebox policy means that you can relax, and actually talk to each other! I am a recent convert, (last 4 months) but I will be a lifelong regular I feel.

Thirdly... Everyone at the Big Man Shop at stocksbridge, all the girls there are fab, they dont try and rush you , and will happily offer an opinion on what looks good on you, and their taste is 99% spot on.

I haven't seen him for a while but Roger, a grey haired bespectacled man who used to work as a meeter and greeter in Asda Handsworth. He always looked really happy even though at one point he looked terribly ill and it's not the most exciting job in the world.
My mate used to work at Woodhouse Asda when she was 16. Nopt long back when she was shopping, her little girl knocked into Roger. He remembered all sorts of personal information about her and she was really touched by this.

The guy who works at the Sarnie shop at Victoria Quays is always very chirpy and although I only go in about once every six weeks, he always remembers how i have my sarnies which impresses me.

There is someone else but that is just for eye candy purposes lol.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I am pretty sure that the shop is owned by father and son - Ron and Ian - hence Ronian.

Don't know which is which though.

That is my uncle, It is a family shop the old bloke being called Ron and Ian the young dark haired lad called Ian.

It was a good shop, sadly they no longer own it but they had it for some years and having left it 2/3 years ago now its still known as Ronian.

I couldn't agree more. I went in on the off chance they had an obscure piece of kit. I came out an hour later after a cup of coffee a chat and giving some advice to another women on cheesecake. They are great, it feels more like a cooking club that a shop. (and i got my pan) Thanks guys

On the slant of pub staff, I'd like to nominate Ken - the landlord of The Loyal Trooper at South Anston.

I'll second that. He always lets us take our junior football team inone of his s little rooms on a Sunday once the mad rush has died down - when we have something to celebrate. Did you know Don - K that years ago any Trooper buying a meausre of spirit in this pub - was entitled to another one free ?? apparantly by order if HM himself which has something to do with its name (this is what my old grandad told me )

To be fair, Reg sounds like he'd get on my tits very quickly.

This is a really nice thread - glad that people are taking the time out to praise people.

I'd nominate the barman at the Dev Cat with the blonde/ginger dreads for being polite and courteous, and the lady with dark hair who takes your blood at the Blood Service centre by the Cathedral. I wish I'd paid proper attention to her name badge so I could big her up properly. Always makes me feel at ease and has a dry sense of humour. Come to think of it, I'd also nominate Martin at the Blood Service.

Ahh.. a nice thread..

Mine are everyone at Mr B's Crookes. All dead friendly in there.

The staff at Ayeshas who serve me mum and dad every week, although neither of them has the heart to tell them that my dad is deaf and cant hear any of their pleasantries. (they also give them a completely hand made Christmas card every year, which i think is a nice touch)

Zif at Mercury taxis, cause his insanity keeps me sane at work.

There are soo many people that I've thought "Wow, I love living in Sheffield" after being served by.
Almost everyone in Lush they are always friendly and informative (always spend a small fortune in there but never feel like I've been up-sold), the bus driver of the 69 to Rotherham who stopped and let me on the bus when both my tires burst near Meadowhall retail park, to the fantastic girls at The Source who walked me home after I had a dizzy spell in the salon. But above and beyond everyone was the lovely bloke who spotted that I was having engine trouble, filled his kettle and came out of his house the other day, my Mini's radiator decided to spring a leak just outside his house. Thank you sooo much, that got me home.

I will get in trouble if I don't mention any of the places my friends work at but they all know how fantastic I think they are, so big up yourselves. :)

There is this bloke in B&Q on Queens Road who is very, very helpful.

I think they call him Ade, or Ady, and I used to hate going to that place for anything but I have seen him a couple of times in there and he is really helpful, walking around with you and helping, and he even carried some heavy stuff out and put it in the car for me without asking.

The staff of Woodseats Fisheries as well (best fish and chip in Sheffield too).

The one on Woodseats High Street is brilliant too (name escapes me for the moment). Very friendly, MASSIVE variety, and top quality!

is that the bus driver who tells the older people to "hold on tight" and he always tells you to have a nice day and asks what your up to etc?if it is yes he cheers you up,better than a lot of people who serve the public!

There's also a bloke who works in Meadowhall WHSmiths who really should be my favourite member of staff. He always takes an interest in what you are buying and is really chatty.
However I find it creepy! (sorry! It's just me being paranoid with my magazines and books!)

I took the bull by the horns and spoke to my 'favourite member of staff' in that way at Christmas time when I saw him out socially . Unfortunately it took A LOT of Dutch courage to do so, I rambled rather than talked, didn't appropriately pick up on the nice comments he made and therefore made myself out to be a raving lunatic. Slapping the Dj's bum is not a good way to make a good impression really. It's only taken four years for me to speak to him then i mess it up! Doh!

There's two people for me. The first is the Irish tram conductor who is really chatty, pleasant and sociable. He takes care to make sure that as many people he comes into contact with have a good start to or end of a day.

There's a young lad in Hillsborough Morrissons who is the most conscientious, capable and efficient chap I have ever encountered working for a super market - He currently seems to be assigned to the fag counter but if you give it 10 years I bet he'll be running the store.

Both of these people do mundane and probably low paid job but I assure you they make my day a little better :)

Best service anywhere has to at Richardsons DIY, Firth Park.

Pauline always manages to translate my incoherent burbles into something sensible and young Steve in the wood cutting department is incredibly helpful - and patient, even if he does take the p**s occasionally.

All the staff seem to have a really good relationship with the customers, and treat them more like friends.

Last Saturday, I realised I was about to run out of wood preservative, so I phoned them up at 5 to 4, to ask what time they closed. It was 4 o'clock, of course! But they waited for me to dash up the road and collect it, which I thought was brilliant considering they obviously wanted to get off for the Bank Holiday weekend.

Local shops like this are a real treasure, compared with the awful multiple chains, where none of the staff seem to know anything about the stuff they sell - and usually couldn't care less.

Agreed, but someone who really understands and is committed to excellent customer care will make the same effort for everyone. Not every customer will appreciate it though! Its obvious when someone wants to help, the body language and facial expression is usually a giveaway before they even say a word. :)
.............Thats why Im at primark, i dont get paid enough for customer service
This statement from a previous poster puzzles me. Customer service is generally not highly lucrative - but if you do take a job in customer service you should be prepared to be welcoming and helpful to the customers. Anyone who doesn't like customers should find another job, its really quite simple.

I believe in giving feedback if I get extreme standards of service, whether bad or good. We had reason to use the ambulance service recently, and the professionalism of the crew was first class. I've contacted the head office to pass on my thanks to the paramedics involved.

I'm very highly trained and experienced in Customer Service and to be honest it isn't an exact science.

There is a concept called the extra yard where you go out of your way to do something for someone who doesn't expect it doing for them, and if you can do it for example once a day it does benefit both parties involved but if you do it constantly to every customer you come in to contact with then you quite often your efforts will not just be unappreciated but certian people will find this patronising. I prefer to use my initiative and intution to find the correct time and place, and correct person to go the extra yard on.

I've been involved in customer service work from the 1970's in various roles, including training. I agree with the concept you mention (we called it going the extra mile :hihi: ). When I suggest that we should give everyone the same level of service, perhaps I should have explained that I meant 'appropriate to the customer'. I wouldn't explain things in the same way to customers with different levels of understanding. Some may want reassurance, others just want to complete a transaction. As my work was mainly in the public sector, many of our customers held a negative view of the service based on past experiences, and some had real problems to overcome. However, by adopting the right behavioural style to suit the situation, it was possible to deliver a consistent high standard.

There will always be customers that are impossible to satisfy, our motto was 'kill them with kindness!' ;)

Well said . I think you have to react to a person as they appear. I am a nurse, and even though you think 'customer care' doesn't come in to my job, it is very important. People expect the same high standard of friendliness, even though we may have just been involved in an harrowing experience.
It is human nature, and the same in all jobs surely?
