sarahjane 16-03-2010, 14:23 Hi
The snakeshop is closed on Monday and Tuesday.
The price of a set up really does depend on what size you decide to get etc etc so it really is impossible to say.
A set up for geckos is significantly cheaper than for beardies though.
Geckos might have a two foot viv, whereas to be fair to beardies you are looking at a four foot one.
Also when I had my beardies I had a ceramic heater on a thermostat as well as different lighting etc. For geckos a heat mat will suffice.
It really is a matter of how far you want to go, whilst still being kind to the animal.
One way to make it cheaper is to build your own viv.
Geckos are also a lot cheaper to maintain.....beardies eat a LOT of food which obviously costs more. They also do a lot of poo's so you need to be cleaning their mess out daily or it stinks, and then you have to buy more substrate.
Both animals are fine for beginners but if you are just starting out I would recommend geckos as they are a cheaper set up, cheaper to fee, smaller etc
Jon and Cindy in the snake shop are great and they will tell you everything you need to know. Sometimes people think that Jon is ignoring them if he is talking to someone else and doesn't acknowlege them. This is not the case. The reality is that when Jon is talking to someone he gives them his full attention, so be patient and when it's your turn he will also give you his full attention.
He will also not sell you something that you don't need just to make money. It's not his style. He doesn't believe in making things any more complicated than it needs to be.
Thanks
Sarah
Hiya,
I have got 2 leopard geckos and I bought their vivarium online. I found it much cheaper than the shop. I rang up a few reptile shops and they quoted me around £80.

A gecko's vivarium is really basic. All you need is a heat mat for them. They don't require lighting although we put a light in ours, it does make it look alot better. Gecko set ups are much cheaper than a beardie plus gecko's don't get half as big. So you won't have to buy a bigger vivarium when they grow.
All you will need for your gecko is:
Vivarium £40 - 2 foot will be fine and will happily house 2 gecko's
Substrate £10
Heat mat £10(About half the size of the vivarium for hot and cold spots)
Log/Branches with maybe some foliage so make it look nice
Hide £5
2 Thermometers £2
Dishes £5
Light(If you want to put one in) £5
With the vivarium above I just turned it around so the holes are on the bottom and the heat mat goes in easily so there is no wires showing.
They gecko's are around £30 each depending on what morph they are.
:)
swampthing 16-03-2010, 17:52 Thanks Greavsy,
Where did you get your Gecko's from?
Also where did you purchase all the bit's and pieces' from?
I got the geckos from Sheffield Exotics, it's near The Snake Shop.
I bought a few of the things off Ebay but it's probably just as cheap to buy from the shop because of delivery.
We got a log out of the park but if you do that make sure it's sterile. Pour boiling hot water over it a few times or if it's small enough boil it, just to kill all the bugs. Ours have been fine with it.
I would recommend getting Geckos :) much easier to look after.
If you want any advice feel free to PM me
cooljules 16-03-2010, 19:11 i wouldnt recomend sheff exotics for animals, thats just me, and what a few others think
ekke_287 16-03-2010, 19:12 I purchased my first leopard gecko from Sheffield Exotics and would recommend them to anyone. As a first time lizard owner, they gave me all the help and advice I needed on keeping the Gecko healthy abd happy. I was sold a beginners faunarium for £100 (think it was) which included water dish, hide, cork bark, substrate, heat mat and the actual baby gecko.
I also purchased a larger viv from there for £69, which again included heat bulb with replacements and more cork bark + leaves decor.
I have never had a problem with Sheffield Exotics and they have been open alot longer than The Snake Shop, 25 years I heard. Not sure how true that is though.
I have purchased 3 Hermanni Tortoises from there and 2 Leopard Gecko's and had no problems yet! All were very healthy animals.
