View Full Version : Unsafe attachments help needed
Hiya all you pc boffins,
I have a problem with outlook express , it is stopping all incoming attachments as "unsafe" , even ones sent by myself from another address. Can anyone tell me how I can open them without sending them to my yahoo address and opening them from there.
thanks a lot
deecee
:help:
from my memory: in outlook express, tools, options, security, clear 'do not allow attachments containing potential viruses' or something. click ok.
obviously you really should only do this when you want to open an attachment you know is safe. keep it selected otherwise.
hth.
thanks for that LL200,
just have to wait for some mail coming in now with attachments
to try it. We only open them from known sources anyway

You can actually send yourself one from your own computer ;)
No need to send anything, just go back to one of the un-openable ones and it should now be openable.
I've got the same problem as well and did exactly the advice followed but still cant open attachments.
I just had a look at my Outlook Express to see what I have checked or not....
Tools, Options, Security tab.....
I have Internet Zone checked (not Restricted Sites zones); the "Warn Me...." box is ticked; "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus", ticked!
All other boxes are unticked, including "Block images and other external content in HTML e-mail".
My Outlook Express seems to work ok....only have one or two attachments blocked, saying that they have virus....maybe the attachments you are supposed to receive have potentially had some sort of virus.:suspect:
Dont think that's the issue; think residual OS problems I encountered early August is more likely.
Has anybody tried a different email client to OE or withOUTLUCK:D?

yeah, i switched to thunderbird for two reasons. Outlook 2003 does not get on with Winfax at all and it was free.
Fine, until thursday when it weirded out on me and now refuses to close cleanly and locks up if it gets put to the background or is left open for any length of time.
Is pmail (pegasus) still going?
I've been using Thunderbird for over 12 Months or so and haven't encountered any problems.
The only slightly annoying thing with it is that it doesn't automatically filter incoming messages according to your rules as OE does, but it's not a major negative point considering.

Eh? Surely not
My tbird filters all mail on arrival; Do you mean you run your filters manually?
I wish I could get to the bottom of this. Maybe it is the two proxy POP3 servers operating on 127.0.0.1 (Spampal and AVG) that are causing it problems, but why now? May do a clean install somewhere and see if that fixes it, and run it with spampal and avg disabled.

Mine's the same. It filters out junk mail, but not mail with filters set to search in the subject line for specific words - so capturing and moving mail from a mailing list for example.
Only been running it a few weeks though so may not have turned on a setting.

Yep, it filters junk out itself but everything else sits in the inbox until I tell it to filter itself through my own personal added filters for my own additional folders.
Phanerothyme 21-08-2005, 23:17 weird I wonder what you are doing differently.
For me, mail is filtered by sender, subject or X-Header immediately upon arrival, its tagged and coloured and marked as read or whatever.
All that is over and above the adpative junk mail controls (which are very good, almost ready to do away with spampal now).
So there's no need to run them manually, cos I don't. Just wondering where the tiny box is that I ticked for it to do that.
But it's all academic, as unless 1.07 solved this weird problem (reinstall no help), I have to move to a client that does. Please don't make me use Outlook or the Opera mail client.
Well, I went from 0.9 to 1.0.6 the other week and haven't had any problems with locking up or freezing on either versions on any of the 3 machines I use it on. On all the machines I have several accounts set up and have never used and third party junk mail controls since installing Thunderbird. I'm still running 0.9 on one machine as I haven't got a round tuit yet.
Seems we have a perfect version of Thunderbird between us. Only problem ius, how to merge them! I've never got the filters working properly in 0.9 or 1.0.6, so, I dunno.
I wouldn't let this problem you're having put you off, I would say it's related to the junk mail apps or the OS.

I agree. Especially since it started on thursday. I've mailed mozilla with the crash info, but we'll see.
When you add a filter - how do you do it?
Thunderbird filters work perfectly for me.
Just so you're aware that there are no other hidden things to turn on or no odd way of setting them up, I just go to tools, message filters, new, create the filter, ok. It then appears in the filter list. Make sure the 'Enabled' is selected.
Hmmm, looking into it I realise all my filters are set for Local Folders. I'm wondering if they only automatically filter if set per account? Anyone else care to check whether the drop down box at the top of the filters box is set for their mail account or Local Folders?
Might be time to re-do all my filters, which could take some doing as there's about 2500 messages in there atm!
the filters apply to the account that you specify in the dropdown. i have none set for local - they are all set for individual accounts.

Er, what did you do to break it? Once you've remebered, undo that and it'll work.
When you reinstalled it did you just reinstall TB or the junk mail filter thingies too?
Phanerothyme 23-08-2005, 20:26 I absolutely have no idea what I did to break it. It seems to hang on the initial pop3 handshake, lingering for a response, when perhaps none has actually been requested
The last time I used pegasus mail, I remember it being very logical and it still is. got that up and running, with a good filters interface (no bayesian anti-spam, boo)
I'll come back to thunderbird when I have the opportunity to investigate - as functional email is pretty important atm.
