View Full Version : What is your best Trilogy film and why ?
SpiderPete 20-08-2005, 11:13 Well here we go, before anyone "blasts" me for saying "its already been done", I have searched for "trilogy" and gone through 22 pages in this section and cannot see a poll for best Trilogy films, it has been mentioned in a few.
So what is your best Trilogy film and why ? (I know I cannot include them all)
This is a hard one between Matrix / Godfather / Lord of the Rings
But .. Lord of the Rings, I am a special effects watcher and these 3 films just blew me away, brill acting as well, but the effects dominated these films, I always watch them again and again and will do for a long time.
Gotta be Lethal Weapon!
Ignore LW4 - the first three are excellent!
Joe
Harry Potter isn't a trilogy.. There will be films of all 7 books probably...
Star Wars trilogy (original trilogy) > all... *hums Darth Vader march tune* :D
SpiderPete 20-08-2005, 11:27 Maybe I should have put "Trilogy or count the first 3 films they did"
Cannot please some people.
muddycoffee 20-08-2005, 11:35 The godfather for me please.
Unusually I liked the third one quite a lot. My mate lent me his boxed set of this and I watched them all in a week and thoroughly enjoyed them.
I would never have watched them but I read a book by the same author called Omerta, which my parents bought me back as a gift from their holiday, and I was totally gripped by it.
I am enjoying reading harry potter and have seen all the films to date, but the last film [the third one I think?] was much better than the first two, direction was in a different class and made it extremely dark.
limpetboy 20-08-2005, 12:41 Godfathr everytime - one of the greatest stories ever told and the one thing (or three) that makes movies worthwhile. Genius in every respect.
40summat 20-08-2005, 13:15 It's Lord of the rings for me, i waited until they all came out before i watched them, the characters where mostly as i'd emagined them to be from the books too.
I do love The godfather though i watched them all in one go a while back and i ended up thinking with an italian accent
StarSparkle 20-08-2005, 13:41 Well chosen selection of trilogies, Peter
Oooh, I'm hard pressed between Alien, The Matrix and Die Hard. All superb in their own ways - all landmark cinema in their own ways.
I'm tempted towards Die Hard as the scripts are so excellent, but I'll go for the Matrix as the best trilogy, although I thought the third one was a bit poor.
But the first two Matrix films are just such quality - visually and mentally, for me, they're two of the greatest films made. Especially the first one, when I saw it in the cinema it completely blew me away - I was thinking about it for days. Visually stunning - intellectually challenging - spiritually moving - what more do you want?

Star Wars did it first.
Indiana Jones did it most entertainingly
LOTR was the most impressive

LOTR was the most impressive I would have to agree, LotR is VERY impressive, the castles, the views, cliffs, endless plains... Fantastic. Star Wars, not the inventor of the genre, but still a first, and Indiana Jones, you gotta love his wit ;)

tslogf74 20-08-2005, 15:08 Well, I voted for Back to the Future, even though I don't like the 2nd one much. Now, if I remember it right it was the first to film parts 2 and 3 simultaneously, and the 3rd is arguably better than the 1st. So for me it's got more of the feel of a true trilogy, instead of just happening to be 3 films featuring the same characters.
And rumour has it that they are making a 4th Indy film so I'm afraid it doesn't count, as good as they (mostly) were.
There's not that many 'true' trilogies. Back to the Future is the only one I can think of, as there is no chance they will make any more. Lord of the Rings will probably get a prequil soon, and Indiana Jones is getting another follow-up.
But out of that selection, the best is Back to the Future by a long way. Sci-fi comedy at its best. And tslogf74, I think BTTF2 is the best one! I love the twists in the plot.
MovingOn 20-08-2005, 15:56 I've been addicted to Indiana Jones since I was a kid, so I've got to say that. And, I don't think anyone would be more delighted than me if they're making a new sequel.
Lord of the Rings isn't a true trilogy... I've heard rumours of them making the Hobbit as a prequel.
Hope they do.

Not quite got the hang of the forum yet, have we?
And it's ok - not everyone has the intellectual capacity to appreciate The Matrix films. Never mind.

So is Evil Dead Trilogy
Army of Darkness roooooooooooooooolues!
Not sure if either are my faves though.
Star Wars 4-5-6 probably got the edge over Indy.
redrobbo 20-08-2005, 19:11 I was tempted to vote for Alien trilogy, but the third film was naff.
Lord of the Rings I found exceptionally tedious, and i could not bring myself to see the third episode.
Despite the critics, I love the Star Wars trilogy.
Harry Potter was fun, Matrix was brilliant, Die Hard became a little too predictable, Back to the Future should have stopped after the first film was made, Indiana Jones was superb, and Terminator was great.
But for superb acting, gripping story line, continuity of interest, and the fact that I bought the box set to view over and over again - it has to be The Godfather trilogy!
Greenback 20-08-2005, 20:11 On a non-Hollywood tip, Kieslowski's Three Colours Trilogy is excellent and Infernal Affairs I and II are very good (though I haven't seen the third yet).
SpiderPete 20-08-2005, 20:18 It looks like I missed that trilogy out, must admit I have never heard of New Jersey Trilogy
foo_fighter 21-08-2005, 07:51 Of the options you've got above, I'd say it's a close call between LotR and Alien, but LotR edges by virtue of Alien3 being weak...
...if they'd gone straight to Resurrection, maybe, but as it is, no.
To broaden the comments though, what about the "Harry Palmer" trilogy, Ipcress File; Funeral in Berlin; Billion Dollar Brain...
...they have to be worth a mention in anybody's list.
But for me the best "trilogy" has to be "the man with no name" (even though he had a name/nickname in all three) of...
...A Fistful of Dollars; For a Few Dollars More; The Good the Bad and the Ugly...
...definitely my top place choice.
foo_fighter 22-08-2005, 17:29 Whilst flicking through the channels on Sky last night I happened upon "Species III" on the Sci-Fi channel...
...which confirmed that "Species"; "Species II"; "Species III" definitely isn't a candidate for the best trilogy.
:P

oh yes. endorse this candidate and it's a true trilogy, conceived as such well before filming, unlike films for which they will be spewing out sequels and prequels until the dollars stop rolling in.
The matrix is not intellectually challenging - its cod Sci Fi, space opera, with bags of faux profundity.
I love the original StarWars trilogy - I was only young at the time and my mum used to work in barnsley Odeon so me and my brother watched them over and over again... its just part of my childhood.
But a very close second would have to be the LOTR trilogy for being very excellent allround action packed adventures that were incredibly well made and visually stunning.

Well, Phan, I guess it partly depends on what your philosophy of life is.
I personally found the first Matrix film in particular thought-provoking and stimulating - and thought it was a brave move by the Wachowski Brothers to introduce such philosophical concepts into a mainstream, block-buster-type film.
I was surprised and delighted by the film, and it had me thinking for days afterwards. I certainly found a lot to agree with spiritually there.
The Matrix may not have been intellectually challenging to you, but we can't all view life from your lofty, supposedly intellectually-superior position.

Has to be LotR for me, though they veer wildly from the books and take huge liberties. They are action films first and foremost. Still, it was a thrill finally to see someone attempt to make films of the book, and though I gripe about the films, they are still filled with stuff I love.
The other thing is that the design on the films was superb in most cases. I love Alan Lee's artwork (and I met him last week too! *starstruck*) and John Howe is another great LotR artist. Though Rohan was totally wrong (I can't help but gripe...)
I don't know if The Hobbit will ever get made, from what I hear Peter Jackson is struggling over the rights.
I enjoyed the Matrix films though I did wonder what the heck they were going on about in places. And the Indy films are fantastic too.
Terminator? Terminator 3 was cack. And I hear they are indeed going to make a 4th, possibly with Arnie held together with duct tape by then.
