View Full Version : FOUND brindle male Lurcher Wincobank area. Can anyone help please?
CollieBird 11-03-2010, 21:17 My friends have found a Lurcher today wandering in the Wincobank area. They now have him at their home as they say the dog warden told them he would be put to sleep if not claimed. He's a brindle roughish haired medium sized dog wearing a tatty greyhound collar. They are getting him scanned tomorrow but if he's not claimed they can't keep him. They also go on holiday this Saturday for 10 days(!!!!) so are looking for a Rescue to take him, or someone to look after him till they get back! They want me to look after him but for several reasons that isn't practical at the moment. Please, can anyone help? Thanks for taking the time to read this.
loopylass 11-03-2010, 21:28 I could if hes ok with cats.
Moonbird 11-03-2010, 21:30 I would love to help with him but my male lurcher isn't always keen on other males.
It was a bit unfair of the dog warden to say that he will be put to sleep as there is no way of knowing that, he might well be claimed , rehomed or taken to a rescue for rehoming.
I think that the person finding him has to sign to keep him for a month before they can find him a new home, if they are going away they cannot do that
What a shame, I hope that it all works out ok for the poor dog, maybe a pic would be a good idea if possible?
whippetylass 11-03-2010, 21:45 Do you know if he has been neutered?
CollieBird 11-03-2010, 21:46 They've got cats loopylass, and he's seen them and not bothered with them.
CollieBird 11-03-2010, 21:47 Don't know about neutering but I'll ask.
sazzlebrin 11-03-2010, 22:23 i really dont know who you friend spoke to (dog warden) but this couldnt be further from the truth. the dogs at the pound are kept for 10 days to see if anyone comes to claim them. after that they are placed for adoption, dogs then stay there until adopted or a rescue can take them to another kennels to rehome. there are dog in the pound that have been there since begining of feb waiting for new homes. :( the only exception to this is if the dog is showing to much aggression to be safely rehomed, and even then its something that is reluctanly done.
the pound currently has around 50 dog in and only 3 empty kennels, this is due to the dogs waiting for homes, there are so many nice dogs in and the lurcher scruffy types get homes quiet easy  hope this helps you friend feel better about the dog possibly going to the pound, sazzle x
Rainrescue 11-03-2010, 22:29 I was just going to post the same thing Sazzle.
I don't think the Dog Warden will have said such a thing to your friend. What they may have said is that - the dog WILL be held for the statutory 7 days, and as far as Sheffield is concerned - they will be kept for 10 days, and then try to be rehomed.
HOWEVER, all dogs over that period of time being held 'run the risk' of being destroyed if there are no more kennel space to keep them in. Sheffield don't put to sleep unless they absolutely have to. The dog needs to be scanned for a microchip and then notification to the dog warden if the friend can keep it. Obviously as they are going away- they can't unless they can find someone responsible to hold onto it if they intended to look after it on their return.
Hopefully the new owner will come forward, but this highlights to everyone the problems experienced in the pound at the moment
50 DOGS DUMPED AND AWAITING HOMES? AT LEAST 50 IRRESPONSIBLE DOG OWNERS AND/OR BREEDERS .
PLEASE spread the word and see if we can't move some of the dogs in there to good homes, so there is always space to hold dogs like this.
sazzlebrin 11-03-2010, 22:34 i know rain, the kennels are soooo full its unbeliveable ..and its not all staffy types either (which is unusual) there just doesnt seem to be enough people wanting to give a dog a home, and too many dogs being dumped ....its getting ridiculous !! ever day i say...."if i won the lottery...." and they would all have somewhere to go ..x

Yes I have to say that I was surprised that the DW would say that too, I wonder if the Lady just panicked after being told that at some time.
Anyway the dogs owners do deserve the chance to get their dog back, sometimes lurchers are very easily spooked and run, he might have someone worried sick searching for him, fingers crossed that this is the case.
Moonbird 12-03-2010, 10:27 Is there any news on this dog today? at the moment I am visiting Wincobank each day I will look out for posters etc.
FallenAngel6 12-03-2010, 10:59 I would love to take him in for a few days but i have a 9 month old daughter and obviously as no one knows him very well i cant risk it...i will however ask around on facebook and ask my father in law who lives in the area if he knows anyone who owns a lurcher similar to the one you've found.
vwkittie 12-03-2010, 12:31 I know someone (experienced lurcher owner) who would probably have him if he's unclaimed, provided he's definately cat-tested.
CollieBird 12-03-2010, 21:46 Well, they haven't got back to me today and I've been unable to contact them so I don't know what's happened with the dog. Maybe they've got the hump with me because I said I couldn't look after him while they are away? As they go on holiday tomorrow it's anyones guess what's happening. I just don't understand some people.

Oh no  so we aren't going to know now at all, I just hope that he is safe, I wish that I had tried with him now, it may have been ok depending upon his temperament etc.
I do hope that they didn't just let him go, a lot of dogs will just go home but some lurchers will run and run and become very scared and skittish outside alone.
jordanjlb 12-03-2010, 21:53 We saw this poor dog yesterday he looked as thin as a rail he was around the Skelwith Road area, me and my friend saw him on the way to school we went back when we'd dropped kids off to try to catch him and feed him but hed gone we looked for him again today. Im so glad someones caring for him as he looked in a state and has been on my mind since yesterday.

Just in case he is back out there if you find him again please catch him, let me know and I will fetch him even if I have to take him to the dog warden I will make sure that he is safe, I love lurchers and have 2 myself so have an idea how to treat them.
CollieBird 12-03-2010, 22:18 Just heard from them - they're going to keep the dog. They've reported him as found, are taking him on holiday with them tomorrow, having left a contact number should he be claimed in the meantime.
FallenAngel6 12-03-2010, 22:19 Thats ecellent news im glad he has somwhere to stay x

Oh thank goodness, I was in a state of panic then, not sure how good an idea it is taking him on holiday but anyway thank goodness he is safe...phew!

We felt awful having to leave him but we had young children with us so needed to get them out of the way, it was obvious he was a stray with the state of him so glad he's now safe and going on his holidays. I even took a can of dog food, tin opener and piece of rope out with me yesterday in case we saw him :hihi:
sazzlebrin 13-03-2010, 17:32 does anyone know if this dog has been scanned to see if it has a microchip ??
CollieBird 15-03-2010, 19:36 As I said in my OP they were getting him scanned the day after they found him.
sazzlebrin 15-03-2010, 23:04 oops sorry missed that :)

why does everybody think the dog wardens is the worlds worse place to take dogs- they all get loved and cared for there you know!!

:D No offence, I know that they are looked after as well as the staff possibly can, but I love sight hounds and they do badly in kennels that was my thinking, I am just worried about him thats all :)
they are all looked after yes.. and the hounds do better than most sbt's in my experience.. but then its stressful for every single one

Yes no kennel environment is ideal unfortunately, I couldn't take on a SBT but I do know my pointies, it's a shame for them all they shouldn't be put in that position.
