Can anyone give me any suggestions about how I can get my 2 year old cat and my 13 week old kitten to get on. The kitten dosent seem to mind the cat and tries to play with him but the cat just attacks the kitten and then starts to attack me. Has anyone got any suggestions on how I can get my cat to be more friendly towards her??

Its got to have a getting used to it period, keep them in separate rooms, and gradually introduce them to each other, cats are very territorial animals, and need time to get used to another cats presence.

Leave them to it. no other option. If in a month they still don't get on then you mat have to get rid of the kitten but it takes time.

I'm not sure if it's the same for cats as it is for dogs, but you have to make sure they know where each other stands in the pecking order. Always try to feed the older cat first. Make a fuss of your older cat. Try to make sure it is the one you spak to /pick up first (it's very easy to fuss over a kitten and that will make the older cat feel it has lost it's place). The kitten will learn from the older cat so don't worry if they have the odd scrap.

Hope this helps.

I totally agree with Hels. Very good advice.

Don't reprimand the older cat for attacking the kitten either, just remove the kitten from danger. You dont want the older cat to associate the little one with being told off.

Give older cat lots of love and always make sure that she thinks she is boss over the little one. The kitten will accept this quite happily.

Good luck x

also dont put them together where neither has the option to flee.

two cats need to establish a heirachy.
their natural 3 options are flee, fight or freeze.

in my experience the older one may eventually only tolerate the kitten. whatever you do dont force the issue

how long have you had the kitten??
i agree with neeeeeeeeeek if within a month no joy then you have to decide wether to continue or find kitten a home,
i got a new cat and they others dont like him but they slowly coming round.. one of my oldest has not been back for weeks so i think he has left home :( have seen him out and about .. maybe when winter comes he will return :D

If you get some of the older cats poo, and rub it on the kitten then the cat will accept it... so I hear.

That's what happened to ours! We had an adult cat come though and she played with Smudge a lot but Smitch refuses to play so instead she moved out, the cat that came to us (we had no choice in the matter, she was a stray and the RSPCA said they'd put her down if we took her there so we kept her) moved on again and Smitch came back!

But I agree with Hels and Olliekitten. The main thing is to make sure that your older cat knows that you still love him and keep them separate for a couple of days just so that they can get used to the presence of each other and then introduce them. Make sure the older cat still has access to his favourite chair or room etc.

never heard of that though Snook!

Hope it soon works out! Good luck

Thanks for the advise Snook but I think I'll be giving your idea a miss. I've been slowly introducing them to each other and making a fuss of the older cat alot so hopefully they will get used to each other. Only had the kitten since wednesday and the cat is 2 years old who we've had from birth. As I'm typing this, the kitten is trying to grab the curser as it goes along, she looks so confused.

Had the same problem when I introduced a female kitten to my older female. The older cat almost killed it so we found it another home. We later took in a male kitten and my older female smothered him with love from day 1. Could be a sex thing?

We had the same problem too and to this day the cats do not get on, its no big deal though and most of the time the older cat tolerates the younger one, she just has to give her the odd spit here and there to remind her that she doesn't like her.

My cat does that! Bless her - it's so sweet isn't it!

I don't really know what else to suggest because our cats don't get on and I still haven't managed to get them to get on. They're sisters and loved eachother as kitttens but now, no way!

I'll try and find out for you though!

I think you could be right... I've heard that it's also much easier to get an older male cat to accept a female, rather than male kitten :)

Just keep an eye on the stuation as it will probably settle down after a while. My cats hated each other at first and even though the kitten was a tough cookie and hissed and spat back for all he was worth, I still kept an eye on them simply because he was small. They still have a few fights each day (boxing with paws and hunting each other), but it's only play and establishing territory and so on, just as wild cats do - I'd only worry if one drew blood or the fight was prolonged.
