Last year I bought a one metre metal spirit level which was a real bargain. I did wonder whether it'd leak or break but a year on and it still seems to be doing what it's supposed to do. [That reminds me I've got shelving to put up]

Just about everything that I have bought from poundland ... hang on .... I can correct that - everything I have bought from poundland has ended up in the bin after only a short time. It is junk. It is stuff thrown together in a shoddy way and hardly ever worth the pound it costs.

The things that do not quickly break such as mugs and CD's I can get just as cheap from the other local discount shop. Wilkinsons have great teatowels and so on.

Not a poundland fan.

they're so cheap i just buy 'em and worry about getting something to connect 'em to later!

when I was a student in Canterbury, I once got a pack of 5 really cool pens- different coloured for my revision notes- reduced from £5 to .... wait for it..... 2p in Wilkos!!! Ok so not truly a pound shop but I've still not recovered from the amazingness of it!!!

pete_fcs

Kookykoo - don't come on here telling me of the wonderful bargains you have picked up like the one above. I am so annoyed now that I never saw those. I get through about 100 pens a week so cheap is my watchword as far as they are concerned.

However - wilks have moved away from Bic and gone onto some cheap crappy substiture - packs of twenty but they are terrible to write with.

Any other bargains to annoy me with Kookykoo?

i've bought those nasty pens too, dragon, they're no good!

have you tried stationary box, their cheapest biro's have been good lately:)

DragonofAna
19-08-2005, 21:32
I tend to shop in hillsborough cos I do not have much time for shopping elsewhere. I do have a shop to run. And it is at my shop that the pens generally go missing.

Anyhow - paper - refill pads. From wilks for a 200 sheet lined pad it was £1.60 - from Woolworths - for a 240 sheet pad it was £1.40. Hmmmmmm

Same with the reams of photocopier paper but you had to buy a box of 5 reams to notice any real saving.

Keep Woolworths at Hillsborough alive.

I buy a lot from Poundland but not everything is cheap, one has to be discriminating as always, the thing is to shop around, just as every other shop, a pint pot from Poundworld started chipping round the lip straight away, but one from poundland is a much better quality.

OMG!!! Now we're talking!!

Pound Shops + eBay + Sheffield Forum = My Life!!!!!!!!

Sad I know, but I can't help it, I am a bargain hunter! I have actually had some really brillient stuff from the pound shops!

I bought quite a few black and dark grey wrought iron wall sconces which held three candles each - they were £1 each but looked a LOT more expensive - very gothic/medieval.. just my thing. Also wrought iron mirrors with a candle holder in front of the mirror for £1 each (looked great on the wall, with the reflections of the candle burning in the mirror) and beautiful wrought iron photo frames and wine racks....

The wine racks were even reduced to 10p each in the end so needless to say I bought a LOT of them :)

Once I hit on something like this I buy loads and save them for gifts (because they look so much more expensive) or sell them on eBay at a profit. I sold the wall sconces and got £25 for a pair!! :D :D :D Not a bad profit at all!!!!

I also get a lot of my hair removal stuff from there. Like the Veet foam, you can pay anything up to £5 or £6 in Boots etc, but it's just a £1 or 99p depending in which one you go in LOL! The first ones I bought were in a foreign language but the rest have been identical to the ones in Boots, Superdrug etc. BARGAIN!!!! :D :D :D

So... why pay more when you can pay less and make a profit too lol. I don't sell everything I buy from the pound shop, and there isn't always a lot in there, it's just hitting on the right things at the right time :)

I love this FORUM!!!!

Got a hands-free for my Motorola V220 which works brilliantly, and those radios they sell are super (headphones AND battery included for a quid), well you can't go wrong.
Some time back they were selling photo quality printer paper, got a couple of packs, superb but they flew off the shelves and haven't returned since, shame.

every christmas i always go to poundland with £25 and get loads of tacky items.
i wait till christmas eve for left over wrappin paper and wrap the lot ready to but in a sack. after the high of christmas day is over and bellys are full, telly been watched loads and nothing left to unwrap, friends come round and out comes one of my sons games he got that day.
last year a friend bought him bingo so that was ideal for games night. sack of tack at the ready and everybody is laughing again. my best friend went home with pens, tea towels, shoe insoles and a truck that said poundland down the side.
because i wrap the items up, after a good grope i know what im feeling so when i won last year i got to pick out poundlands best offer. a spud gun of which i had hours of fun shooting my husbands head from round the living room door

I'm not what you could call a fan of pound shops, but can't resist calling in if I pass one with my Mom. This is because one of my guilty pleasures is to point at something and say 'Wow, that's good, how much are they?' The response 'A pound!' is always forthcoming, and it just makes me laugh 'cos she has no idea that I'm pulling her leg. Bless her! :)

Mrs. Manic & I bought a load of those sticky floor tiles for our bathroom. £1 for 5 tiles, 6 packs for £5. We laid down an ace new bathroom floor for about £25 including the hardboard underneath. Now we have a bathroom that smells niiiice instead of the smell of rotting, urine soaked carpet.

The wrought iron stuff I got really is amazing. Very good quality and very very well made. Like I said some I sold, some were for gifts, but with it being just my cuppa tea, I kept a lot myself too!

Sadly that was all from a pound shop that isn't there now :(

I don't shop in poundland etc. not because I'm a snob but because like someone else said the stuff they sell is crap and drops to bits after a week. I'd rather spend £3 on a mug and have it last.

Mathom

A lot of the stuff is actually decent if you shop carefully - I got tubs of Sandtex for £1 each whereas they are £8 each in Homebase. And with some stuff you just can't go wrong - a plastic urn is a plastic urn no matter how much you pay.

The battery packs have several different sizes in and you can use them for all kinds of little gadgets that use cell batteries - they are actually a very good deal, as watch repairers and so forth buy them for pennies and then sell them on for £s. :)

it has gone for the same reason they all are, sainsburys, athena, H and M (soon), pound shop and many more. Meadowhall have nearly doubled the rents on the leases.

Good news is after nearly 15 years of meadow hell we are going to get our town centre back, H and M moving to top of fargate and I'm sure more will follow.

I got a good bargain yesterday.

I got a pack of 6 reflectors ............. 2 arm bands and 4 on strings for round the neck.

These are brill for kids as it's almost dark when they are coming home from school now. Pays to be safe and a quid for 6 is brilliant. They also have reflective vests and across the body strips too.

It's been a long standing joke in the family about our mum and Poundland and BOGOF bragains. She often buys things for her grandchildren in Germany, she'll buy loads of little things to keep them amused but its costs more to post them than it does to buy them. A couple of years ago she bought 2 little 3 tierd trolleys on wheels and after about 45 minutes of huffing and puffing trying to put them together when they kept falling apart, she was highly amused when in an exasperated state I moaned 'god I wish you'd stay out of that bloody shop'. She still goes in but not as much.

i bought several of those trollies, the d-i-y- wire ones with castors etc....

great value but it took till i'd bought the third one to get the knack of fitting them together, as they tend to wobble about and collapse if you don't get it right!

Alas no Sparkle, I've not had the pleasure of going in there yet. It was in Doncaster, they have more pound shops than Rotherham! I'm slowly turning into a Donny lass! Working there, shopping there, went out there last week... it's only a matter of time before I'm a fully adopted person. The towels are worth getting though - you too can look like a young Elizabeth Taylor. :)

Just to assert my Sheffieldom though, I am adding to the What shops should Sheffield have? thread, we both commented on the other week. I discovered Hotel Chocolate in Nottingham the other day. It's amazing:love:
All the staff are good enough to eat and the chocolate too! Not quite a pound shop though - £2.50 for six choccies!
