Can anyone recommend any free forums for my website?

Yeah there's a few you can use that are free.

There's PHPbb (http://www.phpbb.com), or Invisionboard (http://www.invisionboard.com) or Proboards (http://www.proboards.com) or Runboard (http://www.runboard.com) to give you an idea of what's out there.

Out of the free ones though I'd say PHPbb is one of the better ones, as a lot of sites use it as their forum software as it's got loads of cool options to play with and is very easy to modify to your own tastes if you know what you're doing, which I unfortunately don't :(

Hope that helps :)

Go with phpBB.

I've used it on a number of Web Sites and it is quite nice and easy to set up.

With a little bit of development time you can get the forum to look totaly different to the 'out of the box' look.

I looked at the free boards before I set my own up but I found the compulsary banner adverts drove me nutty. But you do get what you pay for. ;)

I ended up paying for vBulletin http://www.vbulletin.com/order/ at $85/£48 for a year license with full support. No adverts...bliss.

Just wanted to point out that you don't get banner ads or anything like it with phpBB.

I use this (http://xboxsource3.proboards33.com/index.cgi) as the forum for my web site.

No members yet as I haven't got round to advertising it what with the actual site itself being under construction still but it's worth a look.

Does anyone know where one can set up a web forum, preferably for free, but not neccesarily, not unlike the SF? It would be for a circle of professionals to share ideas, so if it were secure from eyes not in the group, all the better.

Thanks

Proboards are crap.

I use PHPbb for the forums on my site, it's great.. So easy to install and administrate..

I wouldn't mind VBulletin but it's like $50 to buy, sod that!

Yep, PHPbb gets another vote. It's the only board I've come across that looks good and is usable too, and free.

And hackable :( We had two attacks in the first 6 weeks of opening CbtTechs.
PHPbb is the best looking though IMO

Or you could go here :

Phpbb forum help (http://www.forfreesupport.com/)

I have the same type of forum on my website, and this weblink will help you alot on what needs doing.

If you go to your Admin Panel then "Forum Admin" and "Management", the "Create New Forum" is your main section heading, "Create new Category" creates one inside of that forum. A bit like a sub heading.

That's the one.

It's been that long since I used phpBB (just one big hole - security, that is;)) that I'd forgot how it worked:D.

cheers for that. How do you cahnge the skin I click install but then skin does not change> and aslo id ther a way to have the adress whith out phpbb in frount like yours is rich

SpiderPete

Right .. here we go, this is how you change the skin. There are 3 stages to this depending on what skin you would like, I end up trying quite a few to see which is best.

Stage 1 - Go to your Admin Panel and select Style Admin and Management and from the list pick one, to add any you wish click on Install , a message will appear saying you were successful in adding the skin.

Stage 2 - Go to Style Admin and Export pick the same one you did from Stage 1 and click on Submit

Stage 3 - Go to General Admin and Configuration and look down the list until you see Default Sytle pick the one from Stage 2 and also on Override user Style put to Yes

This should then load the skin into your forum, to pick another skin go through all 3 stages again.

If you need anymore help, just yell.

If anyone knows of a quicker way let me know, lol

Or you could load them all from Stage one and do the same on Stage two and load individually on Stage three

PS - post your link to your forum and I can take a peek for you.

Skins demos (http://www.phpbbforfree.com/skindemo/)

This is really usefull to preview them before installing, if you like one you will find them in Stage 1 from my previous post.

I have just changed mine to Beats101

Can someone do me a small favour? I need to do an update of my phpBB forum from 2.0.15 to 2.0.16 but I can't get the update to work...

I've downloaded the files from phpbb.com and uploaded the install directory to my web space, but running update_to_latest.php or upgrade.php doesn't work and just gives me loads of errors.

WTF am I doing wrong?!

There's a pint in it at the Dev Cat on Sunday if someone can help me.. I will PM you the FTP address etc.

I would just like to say that phpBB has a terrible security record and there are lots of people trying to find more. If you run php you should be checking for updates regularly.

As a PHP programmer myself I think phpBB is a bit of a disgrace.

Unless you know what your doing, and are very security concious, steer clear of PHPbb, its got more holes than a colander.

I use SMF in a MKPortal shell....it works for me, and can be built on with many mods easily through the easy uploaded and installer.

Does anyone know of any free packages that have arcade mods? The only one I've managed to get working is the arcade/activity mod for phpbb, & I'm getting understandably paranoid about phpbb's security now...

Forumotion is the free forum provider I use, and I've rarely had problems with it.
