I'm thinking of heading out of Sheffield for a night out, travelling further afield to strange new places and one of those is Doncaster.

Me and a few mates have pretty much done everything in Sheffield for the past few years, so it's time to try other towns.

Anyway, has anyone been out in Doncaster and if so is there anywhere worth going to or is it somewhere to miss?

It was on the T V a while back that it was the party capital of the entire country, think it was channel 4.
I have been out there and they really know how to have a good time.

Very young crowd in Donny. Me and my friends had the same idea last month about going there (I'm from there, now live in Sheffield), so I asked my 26 year old brother where's best to go "No offence, but there aren't many people your age that go into town..." was the reply - I'm in my early 30's!!!

So, with that in mind we ventured to Leeds, and are giving Hull a go this weekend. But let us know what you think if you go to Donny.

This is a very serious and negative assumption. Can I ask where you got this information from? I'll assume it's a reliable source or surely you wouldn't be posting such potentially offensive statements?

There was a documentary on ITV about 2/3 years ago about Doncaster and its nightlife, and that's where the HIV info comes from - the town was branded "HIV capital of the UK" across all the papers for weeks afterwards.

I lived in Doncaster until I was 21 (only been in Sheffield 3 years) and the nightlife has rapidly gone downhill. Believe it or not, coach loads of people arrive there every Friday/Saturday night and I really can't think why. There are hundreds of pubs/bars/clubs (mainly around the Silver Street area) within just a couple of square miles but it's chav central - everywhere you go is just like Kingdom.

I remember being stood in a nightclub when I was 17 and feeling so old - the place was full of kids and I was underage myself at the time! I much prefer Sheffield for going out - it's a lot more relaxed and friendly and you don't have to be wearing a Ben Sherman shirt or exposing acres of flesh to get in anywhere. I'll never forget taking my now-husband out in Doncaster on a works do and the only bar in town that would let him in (because of his stretched ears and left arm tattoo) was Edwards of all places! He has never been turned away from anywhere in Sheffield because of his appearance.

"Donny" is a good night out, as most places can be (depending on what the individuals make of them themselves). Fair enough, Donny has its issues but then don't most places?!?

Wakefield and Leeds are also definitely worth a visit and you can usually get a late train back - although not if you want to go clubbing.

I remember that documentary you mention. It put Doncaster on the map for all wrong reasons. The statistics released for 2002 of new HIV cases was 5. Of those 5, 4 had caught it from overseas. This documentary was so memorable mainly because of the scandal of the doorman - Robbo. He was portrayed in this as a stereotypical Doncaster man, sleeping around and spreading the disease. I personally knew him (not in THAT way thank god!) and he did sleep with a lot of people, some of my friends included. By the time he died of AIDS, I have no doubt that he had infected some people.

However, this does not mean that Doncaster is rife with HIV and I'm sure that the latest statistics will support that too. The reason the statistics are so high for Doncaster is because the local health authority serves such a large area. The majority of people treated here are not from Doncaster, they are referred from surrounding areas.

Going back to the point in question, Doncaster can be a fab night out. I know some Sheffield people that love it; they think it's so laid back compared to Sheffield. I think it's the reverse!

It depends what you want. Like Sheffield, Donny has some nice pubs and bars (though not many these days) and many rubbish ones full of idiots.

Last time I went out in Donny all* the guys were 'roid monsters in skin-tight t-shirts and G-star jeans and all* the women looked like prostitutes wearing the bare minimum of clothing, it was bizzare, especially considering it was the middle of winter.

i have been twice and wouldnt go again. maybe i went to the wrong places but thought it was clicky people stared/made us feel uncomfortable in a lot of the bars and loads of the pubs were scruffy. then again suppose you can say all those things about sheffield if you go to certain places.

leeds is really good for a night out, depending on what your into the corn exchange is good for an indie scene.
