Just heard on the news that Mo Mowlem is getting weaker and that she is unconscious. I don't think it's going to be long before the end of this very brave Ladies life is announced.

If all politicians were like Mo Mowlam we'd all be a lot better off

She stood up for what she believed in using hard work, determination and humour and in the last few years her own personal courage stood her well

She'll be very much missed

A truly great lady

Peace and pain free at last.

R.I.P. Mo it was my pleasure to have lived at the same time as such a wonderful human being.

Her own words sum her up so well. "I can't sing; I can't dance; I can't write; I can't spell; but something I can do is get on with people." R.I.P. Mo.

I don't think much of many politicians, but she was more human than most and did a lot of lasting good for the people of Northern Ireland. R.I.P. Mo

Even through my distaste for the Labour party, Mo Mowlem was someone I admired. RIP to a great politician!

The second MP who stood up to Mr Blair dies ... hmmmm :suspect:

Another big personalilty gone in the world of politics.

Gosh she made politics interesting to me.

Could never call Mo wishy-washy.

One of the Labour government's most ignoble actions (goodness, there are so many of them) was the attempt to smear Mowlem once she had fallen out of favour with Blair, Campbell and Mandleson. There was an orchestrated whispering campaign, to convince the media that she was losing her marbles and that her illness had dulled her intellect. Moreover, once it became clear that the Irish peace negotiations were getting somewhere (at least temporarily) she was quickly nudged aside and sidelined by the limelight-obsessed Blair, searching for the leading role as usual in 'historic moments'

R.I.P. Mo.

I felt she never got the credit she deserved for her work in the Northern Ireland peace talks. So sad. :(

RIP, Mo,

You were a rare breed...

a trustworthy parliamentarian, and a person of integrity.

I am so very saddened to hear that Mo has gone. There were few that could match her in parliament for her integrity, and straight-talking.

Politics will be, by far, worse off, for the loss of Mo Mowlem.

First Robin Cook and now this.

At a time when we need good politicians to stand up to the Government this is sad news indeed.

There are very few Labour politicians left that i have any respect for.

These eulogies are becoming rather tedious and repetitive. Can't we have a little posthumous **** taking, as we did recently with Heath and Cook? Has no one got anything bad to say about her?

I also would like to add my thoughts on her passing, although she was labour she was that very rare breed in the poltical world who you knew would tell it as it was,no bull and spin from her.
Its a shame she has passed away, she was probably the last labour figure I had any time for, a good woman, she will be missed.

I had the honour of meeting Mo socially, she was a truly brilliant woman, scholar and MP.

Rest in Peace Mo. People will only realise what a wondeful person we have lost now she has gone.

All my relatives in Ireland and I mourn the passing of this great lady. Nationalist and Unionist alike admired her down to earth and human approach to a very difficult problem.
It is not yet solved and I doubt if it will while Gerry Adams and Ian Paisley walk the earth, but Mo would have solved it.

Marjorie Mowlam, always affectionately known as Mo, was a rare politician. She was unafraid of speaking bluntly, and once famously told Iain Paisley to "f off" (only she actually used the full expletive!).

Her father was an alcoholic. After graduating at Durham university, Mo completed a PhD at the University of Iowa in political science.

In 1981, she organised a series of lectures, which were published as Debate On Disarmament, which she jointly edited, with all proceeds from the book going to the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.

She won the safe Labour seat of Redcar in 1987, becoming opposition spokesperson on Northern Ireland that same year, and opposition Shadow Secretary for Northern Ireland in 1994. She was a principal organiser in support of Tony Blair for the leadership, following the death of John Smith.

Her plain speaking at times caused controversy, such as her call for Buckingham Palace to be demolished and replaced with a modern palace. Upon becoming Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (often regarded as the poison chalice of cabinet posts) she threw herself into the job with gusto. She helped restore the IRA ceasefire, and bravely visited the Maze prison to achieve that objective.

As difficulties with Unionists surfaced, Tony Blair took a more active role in the affairs of the province, and Mo was prompted to remark to Bill Clinton "Didn't you know? I'm the new tea lady around here".

She was appointed to the post of Cabinet Office Minister, which she clearly disliked, having previously described the post as "Minister for the Today programme". Mo was head of the Government's anti-drugs campaign and attracted media attention when she admitted to trying cannabis as a student - "I tried dope. I didn't particularly like it. But unlike President Clinton, I did inhale".

Her fight against a brain tumour, during which time she lost her hair and wore a wig, is well known, and endeared her to many people. She left Parliament at the 2001 election, and set up a charity, MoMo Help, to help rehabilitate drug users and provide support for the parents of disabled children.

Mo described herself as "devout atheist". Her early death, at 55, has sadly robbed us of a much loved personality, and she will be sadly missed.
