View Full Version : What's Your Favourite 80s Hit?

The team behind Batfink (an alternative night) are starting an 80s night called Notorious at Aqua this Friday so we've been taking web requests from our usual crowd of customers.

I've been astounded at people I'd normally think of as cool and gothic going mad for stuff like 'Flashdance' and 'Captain Beaky' so I thought I'd cast the net a bit wider and ask you lot to see if the results are any more mind-boggling.

So, what is your 80s favourite?

EDIT: Oh and is it anything like the stuff you normally listen to?

I have loads of 80s stuff in my MP3 collection, in fact I prefer oldies like stuff from the 70s, 80s and 90s to a lot of the new stuff, at least in those days they didn't have tripe like Crazy ****ing Frog! And people did their own music instead of regurgitating or bastardising other people's stuff with lame cover versions...

I was mad on Madness circa 1982 when I was about 6... Embarrassment and Baggy Trousers are classics IMO!

Housemartins were 80s? How time flies!

Meatload? You mean Meatloaf?! Oh yeah he RAWKS! Bat out of Hell was late 70s though, as were a lot of his early classics, mostly circa late 70s/early 80s.

Lestat I agree with 'Thriller' as being one of the best, but for me 'Come on Eileen' has leeched too much. It seemed to be an endless 'last song' at student nights throughout the 90's.

In fact I heard it more in that decade than in the 80's!!!

Some top tunes there (aside from the Grandma song) and it really does look like people had broader tastes in music than now.

Or was it just that the charts were so full of good songs that it was impossible to choose?

I'll jump to your defence, sugarnspice.

I still do it and I'm a fella.

Only difference is it isn't in my bedroom and singing into a hairbrush, it's usually at The Sheffield (formerly the Shiny Sheff) on a Thursday evening where I make a bit of a plonker of myself.

It's karaoke and it's a great opportunity to blast them 70s and 80s hits out with the added bonus of a pint or nine!

My only problem with Bronski Beat was that I wanted to know why in hell did Jimmy Sommerville sing like a woman with that high pitched voice?

The song was Smalltown Boy, a hit in the summer of 1984. They went to have further hits with Why? and a great cover version, incidentally with Marc Almond of Soft Cell of I Feel Love/Johnny Remember Me/Love To Love You Baby.

As for why Jimmy Sommerville 'sung like a woman' (Rich), well, so did Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees, so does Justin Hawkins from the Darkness...

so what?

'Broken Wings' Mr Mister is my fave song ever! You can't really play that in the club though.

How about 'Obsession' by Animotion, or 'Bring on the dancing horses' by Jesus and Mary Chain.

Ouse...I used to LOVE The Adventures...got ALL their LP's. Their music is fantastic.

Does anyone remember The Associates? AND what did that group Paisey Fantaisie sing??? Is that their name? Who remembers that crap singer called Sheila B Devotion? Christ..how awful was she?

Glad you enjoyed it!

It was going to be a regular event but I had a meeting on Monday to confirm that Aqua will be closing and being turned into a comedy club so our contract is cancelled.

We have two of our regular Batfink nights there and then both Batfink and Notorious are homeless and Sheffield is terrible for finding new venues.

What an excellent topic! Wow...I'm having major nostalgia for the 80s right now (the music anyway) - getting Smash Hits and Record Mirror and spending a fortune on 7" singles!

Some 80's faves right now:

Love Action - Human league
Dr Mabuse - Propaganda
You Spin me Round - Dead Or Alive
Love Like Blood - Killing Joke
Temptation - Heaven 17
This Charming Man - the Smiths

Though most music from the 80s I love right now! bet I'll think of more in a few minutes...

Who covered 'A Little Respect? Erasure? That was their song, written by Vince Clarke of Erasure. Wheatus made a passable attempt at covering it a few years ago though.
