View Full Version : Firefox forgets that a dictionary add-on has been updated

I've recently updated to Firefox 3.5.8 on Windows 7. I have British English Dictionary 1.19 add-on installed.

Each time I start up my computer and open Firefox, I notice that the spellcheck isn't working. When I check Tools>Add-ons, I'm informed that British English Dictionary 1.19 isn't compatible with this version of Firefox. I click the 'Find updates' button, and the dictionary add-on is duly updated. Spellcheck goes on to work as it should.

All is well until the next time I close down and restart the computer, when Firefox again tells me that British English Dictionary 1.19 isn't compatible, the spellcheck fails to work, and the cycle begins again.

It isn't that the dictionary add-on isn't working at all, or that an update isn't being applied - it's that each time the computer is closed down, Firefox seems to forget that it's had an update applied to the British English dictionary add-on.

I do clear cookies etc using CCleaner each time I close down the computer. I've done that for ages though, and this problem has only appeared in the last couple of weeks since I upgraded to Firefox 3.5.8.

Any ideas what's going on?

You can have firefox clear them when you close it, so no need to use CCLeaner... but try and uninstall the addon, and re-install it instead of updating..

if that fails, remove firefox totally, all settings etc (after backing up your bookmarks) and reinstall it, and your addon(s)

Ta, Ghozer. Uninstalling the add-on and reinstalling didn't work. Not keen on uninstalling Firefox completely right now, so I'll leave that 'til I have the time to spend getting Firefox back to how I like it.

From the dictionary's info page, the add-on should be compatible with Firefox 2.0 – 3.7a1pre, and it should work if you override Firefox's compatibility check. The procedure for that looks like something I'm not going to be buggering around with though (references to potential crashes and such like).

I've got Firefox 3.5.8 and British English Dictionary 1.19, however I'm running XP

maybe it's a security issue in Win7 try running firefox as the administrator then reinstall the dictionary

Run a Command as Administrator from the Windows 7 / Vista Run box (http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/run-a-command-as-administrator-from-the-windows-vista-run-box/)

then there shouldn't be any security issues that might affect the dictionaries installation and you shouldn't get any problems when you don't run firefox as admin

possibly

after all that it's probably something else

Thanks for the info. Is that admin function specific to Firefox beyond the standard Windows administrator account? The Windows account under which this problem rears its head is an adminstrator account.

Thanks to you for the info too. I spotted that when I was Googling about the compatibility check thing I mentioned above. I saw the 'advanced users' warning and backed off a bit. I think I'll get someone to have a look at it over the weekend.

Thanks again, all.
