Topic.

I can't seem to play MPEG video files in Winamp at the moment, as soon as I try and do so the f***ing thing just locks up and/or crashes.

It's the latest Winamp 5.09 and my system is a pretty good AMD Athlon 2 Ghz with 512 Mb of RAM.

This is annoying as it means I can't play DIVX movies in Windows Media Player cos it tells me to download loads of codecs and all that crap :(

I'm using version 5.094 and it seems to work ok.

I just checked and mine's version 5.094

The winamp works fine for everything else but doesn't like MPEGs apparently?! :loopy:

get new codecs

do a google search for "k lite codec" go to the "mirrors" link (second one down?) download the codec, install it, and it should fix most problems

What's happened to Winamp? It was such a stable system when they had V3, and since they moved to version 5 there seems to be an update every week or two.

3 wasnt at all stable. thats why 5 came out so quickly. They release new versions cause theyve got lots of money (being affiliated with AOL) and can afford to work on it a lot

That's right.

Version 3 was so bad, they brought out version 5 skipping v4 entirely. As they admitted:

the best bits of v2 + the best bits of v3 = v5

I'm happy with v2.81 - it plays WMA and MP3 files. What more do I need? If I need a cuppa tea, I use a kettle...

So I downloaded the codecs, and it still doesn't work with MPEGs, works OK with AVIs but not MPEGS.. WTF?!

WMP > Winamp.

WMP is good if you dont mind telling M$ everything you do with it, not being able to play certain music that lacks "licensing", whoring yourself out to DRM initiatives, having a massively bloated piece of software that eats resources and doesnt actually work properly, with playlists that have a habit of just ... disappearing, that connects you to the server EVERY TIME you open it to check that what you're doing isnt illegal and tell you about music you DONT want to listen.

yeah sure, in that case, its better

VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) plays anything you throw at it, it has its own built in codecs so you don't need to worry about those. If you want a codec pack get Defiler's (http://hellninjacommando.com/defilerpak/) and play them with Media Player Classic (http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli), which is like the one you get with Windows without any suck.
