If youve got the original windows disk, all you need to do is put it in and follow the on-screen instruction.

Well, maybe not quite that easy but it will get you most of the way there.

I had to do it twice last year and basically first you have to format the hard-drive then re-install windows, which both should be relatively easy from the CD.

Dont reformat the hard drive until you've backed up all of your data files because otherwise you've lost all your work on the hard drive.

If it's a virus then there should be no real need to loose everything and start again.. what does it do at the moment when switched on?
Might be able to help if you can't find anyone else quicker.

If you turn it on and go into safe mode then try to open any anti virus software you have it may clean it up (if you have a virus) if you've recently downloaded or added any software thats caused it to lock, then again go onto safe mode then remove the program and see if it works thereafter.

Kirky- just wondering, did you have any antivirus or firewall sortware on you PC when you got the virus?

Sounds a silly question, but if you have I just wanted to know which a/v and firewall you were using.

Cheers mate.

well ... there is one way to avoid all this virus trollop with Windows

Use Linux!

I'd recommend SuSE. It's a doddle to install these days and there is so much free software available for it you never need to have to worry about not having disks again.

Amazon.co.uk sells it at less than £50. I have a bona fide copy of XP, with CD and haven't used it all year except to boot into it to get the latest set of updates for it from Microsoft.

I've got it here for approximately £50 less than that. Just download whichever distro you want and all the manuals from Distrowatch (http://www.distrowatch.com) and go from there. I've got loads of different flavours for experimenting, some are less fun than others but that's the fun of the fair!
