The biggest size for avatars on this forum is 50x50 pixels.
I had a few problems trying to get mine working, but it seems to be ok as long as the image is a GIF and is below 7000 bytes

depends entirely on the size the website in question will allow

obviously the bigger the better but not too big or the website might not allow it

Go to www.jql.co.uk On menu on left hand side is a free download for an avatar sizer program. Easy to use and handles just about everything.

If you need to resize a gif moving image use
this (http://www.gifworks.com/cgi-bin/gifworks.pl?com=transfer_open) no downloading required...

just click file open and upload from the internet or from your pictures files/folders then resize and resave!
