View Full Version : Old Fashioned Sweet shops in Sheffield
Today I was in Sheffield Centre and I happened to be parked near a sweet shop just at the opposite side of the round-a-bout to Ponds Forge. I had forgotten that this place existed and was surprised to see it still there. It's must have been there years, does anyone know it? Anyway, I bought myself some good old fashioned wine gums (the good hard ones) and a few other sweets I hadn't had for ages. While I was there I noticed car kept pulling up and it was busy, I wonder do you think people actually travel a fair distance to go here? I wanted to ask, does anyone know any other sweet shops like this. There doesn't seem to be many around that have a shop full of jars of traditional sweets.
i knew who you were talking about before i even opened the thread :D
i see it from the tram often

It's a pity it's quite a bit away from me, but I think I shall be going again really soon, maybe after I finish these Wine Gums off. :D
There is a good sweet shop on Totley Rise called Sweets and Treats.
Its only just opened but it has all old fashioned sweets, like
Humbugs
Cherry lips
Sherbert lemons
Cola Cubes
Pontefract cakes
Liquorice stuff
and loads more
There is also one at the end of Abbey lane nr Woodseats.
I know which one you're on about. We go there a lot. It's run by Granelli's if I remember rightly. "Hey, let's stop... here's a REAL sweetie shop!" is the new slogan on the front although the old one used to be "Old fashioned spice at an old fashioned price!" My mum loves that shop!!
Chloé
I know it well. I am a frequent visitor there. Found it when I lived up the road and used to walk to town. Trouble is I get a little carried away and leave with a carrier bag full of goodies which are supposed to last a week or so but only ever last a couple of days!!!!!

I can imagine I have polished off my Wine Gums already and itching or more....

The slogan you are talking about "old fashioned spice at an old fashioned price" must have been put back up because when I went on Sunday it was there....only on one side though, it did say Granelli's on the other.
JonHarrison 10-04-2003, 15:31 Granelli's own the shop and also run the ice cream business from the yard behind. A classic sheffield family firm that we should all support.
:D
alchresearch 12-04-2003, 18:21 There's one in Woodhouse next to the Chemist and a shop called "The Wizard"
Grannellis had a shop at the bottom of Duke street about 50 years ago.
I can remember the window display, the chocs were all piled up neatley on shelves from top to bottom of the window.
They sold the darkest chocolate ever called Oliver Twist and coffee beans that burst in your mouth.
My dad used to buy enough sweets to last a week
Glad to here they are still trading.
SlimboyFat 11-10-2005, 22:25 Being a Rotherhamer but my mums side of the family are from Sheffield we would visit Sheffield quite often to go to my Grans / Aunties etc.
The first stop was always my grans which was up the hill from the sweet shop and turn right (can't remember the name now).
Now we would catch the bus to Sheffield then my mum would always give me the choice of either another bus to my grans or walk and spend the bus fare at Grannellis. It amazes me now the amount of sweets we got for the price of the bus fares (this being in the 70s we where talking a matter of pence for busfares.
Now I noticed the shop was still open a couple of months back and keep planning on taking the mates kids up there as they don't believe me when I tell them about it.
Does anybody know what times they are open (especially Saturdays)
can anyone remember the very old ice cream cart that granellis had,it only came out on special occasions  showing my age now
Would recommend the little sweetie shop on Ecclesall Road South, opposite the huge CofE church, by the lights for Carterknowle road, can't remember the name.
Does all the fancy Belgian chocolates you would expect in this neighbourhood,e but also offers all the classics in jars. There is something evocative of my childhood hearing the rattle of the boiled sweets hitting the scales. I love blackcurrant and licquorice.
There's also a market stall down the moor that sells some of the old fashioned sweets.
daniel_f 12-10-2005, 10:49 I know the one, but I tend to get my stuff local in Handsworth at Sugar and Spice, next to the Post Office. Loadsa old sweets and big tubs full of barley sugar twists...
<<drool...>>
Yellowrose 12-10-2005, 12:01 About 20 or so years ago, did Granelli's have a sweet shop on Chapel Walk? Near the back door of Marks and Spencers?
matt1889 12-10-2005, 12:46 Granellis own both the shop at park square roundabout as talk about and the open air shop on the moor!
This shop has been open yrs and yrs!
Quality sweets, old fashioned and very cheap!
Plus, i can allways remember going there as a lad for some brandy snaps and some chocolate lick. mmmmmmmm
WallBuilder 12-10-2005, 13:25 If you've got kids or can borrow some then it's well worth taking them to this shop just to see their eye's light up and it's a pretty good exscuse for you to indulge as well.
There used to be a sweet shop at the bottom of Woodseats road and the family who ran it also had one in Dore village on a corner and i used to frequent both mostly for the jellied fruits but also to chat to the young lady who wworked there.
matt1889 12-10-2005, 13:34 lol at wallbuilder........................
Im gonna have to make me some kids!!!!!!
Just so i can indulge in sweeties in years to come, plus, then i can buy them a new playstation for christmas and play on it myself, lol
gritzland 14-10-2005, 11:54 Would recommend the little sweetie shop on Ecclesall Road South, opposite the huge CofE church, by the lights for Carterknowle road, can't remember the name.
The sweet shop is called 'Choclate Box' and they do really nice stuff.
Granelli's also go to a lot of local outdoor events during spring/summer!!!
dishwasher 14-10-2005, 14:05 The stall on the Moor is fantastic.
I'm not a big fan of Bassett's All Sorts (too much coconut) but I do like those ones that are about the size and shape of 10p pieces, made of licorice, coated in coloured sugar-flavoured pieces.
you can buy those by the ounce at that stall on the Moor!
_BLADESMAN_ 07-07-2008, 18:01 To celebrate the fact I'm off to Granellis tomorrow (for 'blast from the past' purposes) I thought it worth putting this thread on top of the pile.
Never been before but read some top comments. You'd never believe I only live 5 minutes drive away lol
jennybongo 08-07-2008, 23:19 the shop in crosspool sells all the old 'swats'....cola cubes, yorkshire mix, sherbert, cherry lips, bonbons, edable necklaces, wine gums, pear drops, floral gums etc. etc.......mmmmmm!! The man in there is lovely and knows his stuff when it comes down to the old sweets. It's next door to charisma.
I used to go into the sweet shop at bottom of Duke Street in the 1950's when I was a child every Saturday.
Mum, Dad, my sister and me would get off the bus at the bottom of Duke street and go into the shop to buy our weekly treat, (sherbet lemons and sugared almonds as I remember) then we'd walk and have a look at the boats on the canal as we made our way to Waingate to catch the second bus up to Southey Green to see my Grandparents
Lovely memories.
Yog Sothoth 09-07-2008, 08:09 Do they have a Penny Tray?
adam Kell 24-10-2008, 16:40 I'm off to Granelli's in about 15 minutes,

That place is "The Chocolate Bar" and it must be something of a goldmine for the owners because I always have to queue when I go in.
They cover both ends of the sweets market, rows of jars of old fashioned boiled sweets in jars available by the ounce for kids and the highest quality Belgian and Swiss handmade chocolates for adults, also available by the ounce - pick and mix what you want of either. It's a real old fashioned place and thankfully thriving
eurotour08 10-11-2008, 03:53 Granelli's is fantastic! Being in the student accomodation accross the road we always go in on our way to uni! It is actually the best sweet shop in the entire world! I bet they're making an absolute fortune off all the students and tehre's more to come with the new office block that's being built next to the The Pinnacles (student acc.). They've even started selling milk, tea, sugar and cigarettes! I love it!
Granellis is a sheffield treasure , there is another old fashioned sweet show on handsworth , the number of them through the country is going down when I was a lad in woodseats we had 4 proper ones (1 next to post office office ) bullocks oposite chantry pub one oposite big tree and a little one in what is now the italian next to kft plus wilsons next to woodseats hotel which also did cold drinks, harrys oposite gleesons that was a general store plus most of the newsagents did proper sweets from jars , we now only have the newsagents near the big tree that do jars.
Then of course there was the abbey lane area
The stall on the Moor is fantastic.

Not sure but think the stall on the moor is granellis

Think theve always sold milk sugar etc at least they did in the 1970's when there was more housing around the area
gummybear197 12-11-2008, 22:55 the sweet shop has opened in hillsborough its called the sweet sensation
mum of 3 13-11-2008, 15:37 Granellis has been there years..wicked sweet shop
One shop which I think hasnt been mentioned is the one in Castle Market on the ground floor near the lift on the back wall
loobylou-lou 13-11-2008, 18:10 I think there ought to be a campaign to bring shops like these back. Talking of sweet shops that have gone, by does anyone remeber Hibberts in town? They had one on Pinstone st and one on Surrey St (Both now GT News). They had striped brown bags with their name on and always had the sweets ready bagged. The only thing with tsweets shops was it always took ages to decide what to have. The ones on Woodseats were
Mrs Church's - near Scarsdale Road
Bullocks - Opposite Chantrey pub (Near Mr Rounds - That is another thread for discussion)
Smiths (next to Woodseats PO according to Kellys directory c.1972)
Ye Olde Candy shop (opposite big Tree)
Josies (across from Woodseats News - That woman was evil to kids). What is Marco's restaurant was part of the same shop, think they sold cards in that part.
Sweet shop across from Abbey Pub (name unknown - this was around 1977?)
There were 2 sweet shops on Abbey Lane at one point both on opposite sides of the road the larger one was on the right going towards Chesterfield Rd.
Those were the days. Anyway talking of shops what about the produce, my favourites were Lions Midget gems, Jamesons Raspberry Ruffles and Thornes Butter Dainties mmmmmm............
beck_teria 01-12-2008, 19:39 Hi! I am a journalism student at the university of Sheffield and I am writing a story about Granelli's Sweet Shop for my coursework and the student newspaper. I was wondering if anyone would help me with it. Please share with me:
1. How you found out about/who introduced you to Granelli's?
2. How often you buy sweets from Granelli's?
3. What are your favourite sweets from Granelli's?
4. Why you love Granelli's?
5. Describe your experience/feelings/impressions when you FIRST stepped into Granelli's.
6. Please leave your name, age and address because I have to use it for quotes in the article (For confidentiality purposes, you can email me at beck_teria@yahoo.com.sg)
A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL!!!!

beck_teria 01-12-2008, 20:10  Sorry I'm new to forums. Never been in one before *ashamed* so if you see a same post by me pls ignore it or you can choose wherever you want to reply it!
Just seen that my shop in on the thread back in 2005. I took over Sugar & Spice in 2007 on Handsworth Road next to the post office!
We need as many people like everyone on this thread to keep the little sweets shops going! Keep buying your little sweet bags from all the traditional shops in sheffield.

Darcy's still sell online (http://www.frooly.com/darcys)but unfortunately had to close their shop.
Wow this is an old one. I was in Rawtenstall yesterday and it appears there is a Granellis ice cream/sweet shop there as well - their website says they have been there since 1928 but are they the same? The ice cream vans are alike, so its possible, but I thought "our" Granellis had been open much longer than that.
