i get an error message saying "wrong disk type" or something to that effect.
It then says press any key to continue, but the same message repeats.

I don't have any type of disk in the PC, so why does it say I have?

On bootup? If so, check for floppy, CDROMs in the drives. Eles it could be a dodgy HDD drive.
