View Full Version : TENS machines - which is best?
Shopping around to purchase a TENS machine to use at the start of labour - and possibly throughout but from what I've been reading its probably only going to be most effective at the beginning.
Has anyone used one and if so which make as there seems to be so many we're not sure which to go for.
pattricia 01-03-2010, 13:37 Have never used one, but there doesnt seem to be any difference between the cheap ones and the expensive ones. They all do the same job.
honeyb35 01-03-2010, 15:21 I can't remember which one I used, I ordered one online though and it was delivered very quickly (last minute decision for me before I was induced!)
It was fantastic, I used it almost all the way through and the midwife took it off just before I started pushing.
I can see why they won't work for everyone but it was definetely something that worked for me, and I wouldn't hesitate to use one again.
I've heard postive things about the ones you can buy / hire from lloyds pharmacy. Just make sure it has a boost button as they are the ones to use in labour
MissGiggles 01-03-2010, 15:38 I used a tens machine in my labour , the hospital gave me one to use. and my god it helped! better then the gas and air. x
Yeah just went for antenatal classes and midwife said they don't have them in the hospital so to sort one out.
Looked at the Lloyds one for labour at £29.99 which looks ok to me. There are other makes out there for £60+ but just don't think theres that much difference other than the name tag.
I want to get one sooner rather than later so I can start using it straightaway when contractions start so before I get into hospital.
MissGiggles 01-03-2010, 16:08 after when i had my little one , i looked on ebay and i bidded on the Lloyds tens machine brand new , payed about £5 x
tinkerbell-rose 06-03-2010, 22:26 hi
i used the mama tens machine. mopthercare hire them out but i brought mine.
mine was great you do need to use it from early on when the pains first start.
i was told they are not much use if your going to be getting in and out of the bath because you have to take them off and the effect wares off and doesnt work as good when you put it back on.
i put mine on early on and used all the way through till about half an hour towards the end. as i was going to have an epidural but my lil girl made an appearance before they had chance lol.
it is fab though deffo need to start off on it early and you move up in settingsas the pain gets worse. i found mine using on birthing ball was great then onto gas n air. i wish id used 1 with my 1st to. got me through 18 hours of labour lol.
good luck with it all xx
Yeah just went for antenatal classes and midwife said they don't have them in the hospital so to sort one out. Which hospital are you going to?
At our antenatal class we were told that Jessops DO have some, but they were refused funding for replacement pads :loopy:, so if you can get the replacement pads, you'd most likely be able to borrow one
If you're going to Jessops, I'd press them about this

Its Jessops that we're going to and the antenatal class was run by a midwife at Jessops who said they don't have any and you have to get your own. Strange :loopy:
LouLounHarry 16-03-2010, 21:48 Hi,
I used a Lloyds own brand one and it was fab. I just used that and the breathing I was taught in pregnancy yoga.
I managed to get the Lloyds one when they were on offer and think it was about £20-30.
I spoke to Jessops, they said that they don't rent them out anymore as too many weren't being returned. I asked in October about them so am not sure how current the info is.
Good luck and put the tens on as early as possible and...have a test run first x

We've decided to go with the Femme tens machine as it has the boost button but also you can change the pulse widths as well so a little bit different.
Most places were renting them for £25 but I found a website that you could buy one for £39 so decided on buying one instead so we know its brand new and not been used by loads of people before. Most places had it for £50-£60 so glad I found it on offer.

I had this one too and it was just as good as the expensive one which I hired first time round.
The Lloyds one also has a boost button and adjustable pulse width and rate. It looks very similar to the femme one just a different colour. It's cheaper too which is alwaya a bonus!
Hi there
In the end I purchased the Femme Tens machine as it had the best right up etc.
However due to my very quick labour I didn't even get a chance to get it out of the box! Therefore I'm looking to sell it as new.
Heres a link to more info about it http://www.tensmachines.co.uk/Femme-TENS-Maternity-Tens-Machine_p_47.html
I have literally put the battery in it - nothing else has been touched or used.
Would like to get about £25 back for it - if you're interested let me know.
