Cant sign in to the PS network, and looking on the forums it could well be a grave error on Sonys part, hopefully its not and its just maintanece.

This is a major, major error on Sony's side, and i think has something to do with February only having 28 days.

Read this..........

The same thing happened Feb 28,th 2008 and 2009 so it's obviously a yearly planned maintenance of some kind. That or a glitch which only hist on Feb 28th. Either way, given the last 2 times it happened the issues were resolved I'm sure this time will be no different

If it still is not working for you, do not try and connect until you know it is working - apparently people were losing data when trying to connect.

It is not a 'PSN' error - it is a glitch affecting the internal clock of 'fat' PS3 units. Even those not connected to the internet are being hit (I read the posts online this morning before even going near my console. Unplugged it from the network and booted up to watch a film, and noticed the time was wrong. Tested Wipeout to find it was a "trial").

Apparantly it is something to do with the roll-over from 28th Feb to 1st March 2010 causing a glitch which sets the internal clock back to an earlier time (in most cases Dec 31 1999). As this is prior to the console release, it has caused bugs in games and trophies (and possibly more) which are time-stamped with dates after that date. (Wipeout HD, for example, reverts back to the 'trial' version available before release as mentioned above).

Note, this is the 'internal' clock, and not the time and date display that you can alter, so changing that will have no effect.

http://uk.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=27207134&tag=topics;title has some info. Sony posted a "We are aware..." notice on their blog and Twitter earlier, but still no update on that.

It may fix itself when it rolls over to March 2nd, but no-one knows whether any lost data will reappear as of yet.

If you have a 'slim' unit...then no issues there, you can game as normal. Just us old 'fatties' hit here.

I tried this morning and can't load any games. It fails to load my trophies and then quits out of the game.

Guess I'll have to leave it for 24 hours and see if it sorts itself tomorrow. I won't be figuring out the identity of the origami killer today I suppose.

there will be riots if I have to start from Lvl 1 on MW2.

Sounds like they've been working on the issue for hours and still no confirmation of the cause / solution, which makes you think it won't be a simple solution.

Issue may be how to get the patch to people. If it won't allow you to sign into PSN then how do you download the patch (when available).

I feel for you. I just finished a couple of games 100% and started Heavy Rain on friday. I don't want to have to start again on all three.

Sony issued a statement update about an hour ago on the blog http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/03/latest-info-on-playstation-network-status/

It basically says exactly the same thing that other sites (such as http://uk.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=27207134&tag=topics;title ) were saying at 9am this morning.

Nice hard day's work there Sony! Your solution?
We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours.

Am I just too cynical if I tend to read this as, "We hope that Gamespot are right in saying it may clear itself at midnight as has happened with other hardware that had similar bugs!"

What do you bet that if it does, Sony will try to claim they somehow miraculously sorted it out without even requiring you to download a patch!

This (http://news.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/hi/technology/newsid_10050000/newsid_10058900/10058914.stm) is from the BBC website.

It's only affecting older models apparently.

I'd rather hear them say that than they can't fix it and we all have to go out and buy slim models instead.

The only things you can play at the moment are demos and iplayer really.

Fingers crossed its not deleted my assassins creed files or fifa ones.

They reckon it will sort itself out in like 5 minutes.

Update: Back to normal for me

Just as predicted by the Gamespot forumers many hours before Sony even commented, the 'fix' was to wait until the roll-over of date again.

I fully anticipate Sony trying to take credit for it working again, despite them having done nought to fix it.

Aye....but thats all Sony did on their official update to the situation at 6pm tonight too (repeat what someone else said, in their case Gamespot at 9am) :)

Place your bets as to whether they will look at a fix to stop it happening in the future!

From what ive read this has happened twice before in 08 and 09 on exactley the same dates and goes back to normal 24 hours after, heres hoping.

It's never happened before. The problem is that some tool set the internal clock so that it recognised every year divisible by 2 as a leap year, instead of 4 as it should be. Therefore the PS3 will read every even-numbered year as a leap year, and go to 29th February. The last time this could've happened was 1st March 2006, before PS3 went on sale. Odd numbered years aren't affected, and genuine leap years aren't a problem. But it's going to happen again in 2014.

Woah, calm down there. See the 'smiley' that was because I was joking. Seriously, I didn't realise I was required to thank you for your comments on the thread. They obviously helped rectify the problem just as much as Sony did.

I was posting after midnight to confirm that, as per reports, the date error fixed itself after midnight. No need to get a bee in your bonnet about it just because I didn't name-check you. After all, your erroneous suggestion that it has occurred before each year, was simply repeating what you read elsewhere too...much as I did with Gamespot.

No it hasn't. See my previous post. Do you think if this had happened before then everyone would've been in such panic? This has never happened to anyone on PS3. If you'd bothered to Google it properly you wouldn't have just said something so clearly untrue.

You lose unsynched trophies. I think that's just one or two for me, fortunately. Anything you synched should be fine.

Well it did make most major news bulletins yesterday and the front page of this morning's Metro. But once everyone realised it would fix itself at midnight there didn't seem much point making more of a fuss. Basically all fat non-80GB PS3s are going to fail on the 1st of March every even-numbered non-leap year for all eternity. Nothing they can do about it. At least we know for next time.
