View Full Version : Can you tell me the best pub lunch please ?
pattricia 17-08-2005, 22:18 Can you tell me the best pub lunch in Sheffield,Derbyshire or the surrounding areas ? Ye Derwent, The Yorkshire Bridge and Crosspool Tavern are all good. But does anyone know of any better. Not bothered about price but food must be good.
Devonshire Cat in the city centre offers a refreshing change.
Out in the styx I too would be interested to know some decent places.
Fox House in the peak district.
Chez Lahlou, Commonside.
Dingy, cramped atmosphere, but marvelous french food!!
Be warned though - do not order a starter (tempting as the choices are - frog's legs in a gorgeous sauce etc!). They bring you complimentary veg dips, french pastry bread and bbq'ed chicken, so you are stuffed before the main course!
PS, All my friends rave about Rafters restaurant too!
Whoops, sorry, missed the 'pub' word!
Yorkshire Bridge is nice, but for the further couple of miles, I would recommend The Castle Inn situated bang in the centre of Castleton.
neeeeeeeeeek 18-08-2005, 09:13 Fox house is just a chain and the food proves it! Monsel Head is probably the best I know of out in the peaks. Very nice food, good choice, not overpriced.
sheff_minx 18-08-2005, 09:16 Try the Cross Keys in Chapel Milton (between Chinley and Chapel-en-le-Frith). Excellent home-cooked food, good value, and lovely staff. It's about a 45 min drive though and is only open for lunch on Sundays though. PM me if you want more info.
sirtommo 18-08-2005, 09:29 Why not try the Millstone out at Hathersage

Fox House (Hathersage Road, Dore Moor)
Cricket Inn (Penny Lane, Totley Bents)
Wheats Sheaf (Baslow)
The Canvendish (Balsow) (a tad expensive).
CaptainSwing 18-08-2005, 09:44 Walkley Cottage does good unpretentious home cooked pub food and has fine beer.
Not my kind of place, but the food in All Bar One is good too.
And I'd go along with neeeeeeeeeek in recommending Monsal Head, which also has fantastic beer and a great view, if the weather is good enough to sit outside. (Also agree that Fox House is no great shakes.)
Berberis 18-08-2005, 09:52 Fullwood Inn does the BEST Sunday lunches! The food is top quality at reasonable prices all promptly served by the best bunch of pretty waitress’s I’ve seen on one room!
the old hall pub, hope,or poachers arms further up the road
benclements2 18-08-2005, 15:26 Door Moor Inn or Waggon And Horses have always been good whenever I have been!
Lion's Lair near Coles (john lewis) in town. Gastro grub affair - if that's your bag. Nice beer garden too.
the_pikey 18-08-2005, 19:14 The Pheasant out at Owler Bar can be good. Or Dempseys if you've never done it before. 2 very different experiences.
Tripitaka 18-08-2005, 21:09 Always had good meals at the Scotsmans Pack in Hathersage and The Peacock at Owler bar.
the moorlands at owler bar is a good place to eat with reasonably priced food and great service
pattricia 19-08-2005, 21:56 Thanks for all your replies.Hope to try them all.
ModernApe 29-08-2005, 11:49 Eyre Arms out at Calver. Great food and hughe portions!!
I would recomend Sir Jacks just off the M18 J1 (Bawtry) turn left at roundabout.
It's a bit like Brewsters but MUCH better. They have 241 every day. The meals are great and a good size too. I had the beef curry and it was gorgeous!
I went there for the first time on my last visit to Sheffield and will definately go there again. There is a playarea for the kids at the side at a reasonable price of 2 pound per child.
Definitely my fave place is the Little John in Hathersage. Great food, lots of it and not expensive either.
Johnnywarren 30-08-2005, 13:38 The Plough, Leadmill Bridge, Hathersage. Simply incredible food.
Although if you want a great big scoff up, of reasonable quality - the portions at the Little John are enormous!!
49er_Jerry 30-08-2005, 14:10 The Ladybower Inn does fantastic food. Great bar menu and fabulours restaraunt men. Mostly local meat from what I recall.
netheredge 18-02-2007, 12:01 Patricia????? whos paying?you or him lol?kidding
Amsterdamned 18-02-2007, 12:04 Best pub food in Sheffield is in Fagans on Broad Lane, end of.
EdnaKrabappe 18-02-2007, 12:05 I like the Cricket Inn but not been for ages since the summer at least.
(Adds to list of things to do!)
The Ashford Arms in Ashford on the water not far from Castleton and Bakewell
The Three Merry Lads at Lodgemoor is fab for food, can be a bit pricey but well worth it.
Rose and Crown, barlborough
The Rose And Crown, Barlborough,
FAO: the person who said the Sir Jacks in Rotherham... You are having a laugh aint ya? Plastic food
don't go to fagans, the food is poor and it takes about an hour to bring your order
funkyukgal 21-02-2007, 02:43 wow a 2 year old thread resurrected!!
Does Crosspool tavern still do cavery since its been refurbished?
Why not try the Millstone out at Hathersage
I ate here once and it was wicked
Grappler 21-02-2007, 10:30 The Plough on Sandygate Road near Crosspool, great food but not that cheap from memory, good beer as well.
red lion at grenoside!!
yay, only good when i'm on of course!
Has to be the peacock!
the one on the way to Chatsworth, you must be joking.
Marmite Man 22-02-2007, 21:54 I agree with all who said The Peacock out at Owler Bar, on a fine day the view from the tables outside is cracking. If you're out that way The Pump House and the Angel in Holmesfield are good.
THE best (pricey though) is The Chequers out in Frogatt though.
The food at the "Old Mother Redcap" in Bradway is very good & a nice cheap pint too.
5nil Wal 23-02-2007, 10:19 try the crown & cushion at chapeltown, great food and massive plates!!!!:
Try Rowleys at Baslow, The Devonshire Arms at Beeley - both Derbyshire, or the George & Dragon at Wentworth. 3 different styles there.
yummyyumyum 23-02-2007, 21:51 the pheonix inn at ridgeway is lovely and great value for money.

You must have gone on good day. Used to go regularly then "stopped". Went again and realised why.:( :(
Try the Robin Hood at Little Matlock, Stannington. Difficult to get to, but once you're there - very locally sourced food and beer, great cooking, gastopub quality, friendly staff, and chilled atmosphere.
The Hillsborough Hotel - really nice grub and excellent beer. Food is £4 a meal, except Sunday lunch. Theres a whole other thread on here somewhere about how blooming marvellous it is!
Would definitely recommend the Monsal Head - also the Three Stags Heads at Wardlow Mires (if its still going, been a while since I made it there) - the food there was great and it had a unique atmosphere, too.

Three Stags Head is still open under the same rather eccentric landlord. Check before venturing out as it only tends to open at the weekends.
Would also recommend the Monsal Head, the Bulls Head in Ashford on the Water is also well worth investigation.
Jazzybmzoo 10-04-2007, 14:17 Dore Moor Inn has always been a fave. Lovely tasting and nice, big portions. None of this gourmet, nouveau cuisine boll*cks (let slip my working class roots there).
Sorry but have to disagree with this one especially if you are Veggie!
Last time I went to the Dore Moor Inn I asked if they could do me a sundy lunch but without the meat ie just veg and they said NO! I also asked about a couple of other dishes and they would not alter anything for me. it's all down to quality control and clearly not freshly prepared to order.
Sorry just my opinion but thought I should share it.
Fox House in the peak district.
It's nice in there, i haven't been in a while though.

Dore Moor Inn is good. Also Fox House Inn a bit further along the same road.

And a vicious Alsatian that chases you.:(

:gag: I ate there a couple of months sago, the first time in several years and it was dreadful. http://starquake-mobile.blogspot.com/search/label/Restaurants
Starquake 13-04-2007, 18:02 Dore Moor Inn is good. Also Fox House Inn a bit further along the same road.
They are also the same chain of food pubs, Bass I think. You will find they are virtually identical as is the Admiral Rodney and the pub not far of J32 down the A57 towards Worksop.

Yes Rodney too but was not so impressed with this one as they had smaller portions and my steak was over cooked.
Dore Moor Inn is good. Also Fox House Inn a bit further along the same road.
fox house is an awfull pub bad beer bad service and crap food
Have to agree on the Fox House service issues, we went there for sunday lunch a couple of years ago and they basically forgot about our order completely, so took about 90 mins for meals to arrive. My parents were most unimpressed. Was nice enough when it did arrive, but it's still mentioned when we're waiting a little while for our food to this day.
As mentioned before, the Three Merry Lads is a favourite for us, pricey but always nice.
beckelina 23-04-2007, 11:40 I used to work in a pub of the same chain to the Fox House down in Crawley near Gatwick.
Food is identi-kit and mostly naff ingredients. Almost everything (including cheesy mash) was delivered pre-prepared, and even the minted lamb chops were boil-in-the-bag :gag:
Although the tartare sauce is brilliant...
TBH it didn't taste too bad, but if you want proper local food not stuffed with preservatives then go somewhere else! Cricket and Crown are nice in Totley (if you can stand the stuffed pink shirts and tweed in the Crown).
up until a couple of weeks ago I would have recommended The Chequers at Froggatt too but after the service with a snarl we've got the last few times we've visited and the bland not so great value food I'll wouldnt recommend it at all. I wont be going again.
The Plough is great though and The Cricket at Totley. I dont think you can really go wrong once you're out in the peaks as long as you steer clear of the chain pubs.

I've only been in there once, for a drink. we got the same 'service'... won't be going back!
We were regulars @ Chequers for lunch, then like you we went off it. Try Eyre Arms on the Hassop Rd (old one covered in ivy) It's always good. Four of us tried the Chequers for an evening meal. very good but with a bill for £120 in a pub is a bit much.
Does anyone know anywhere nice and close to Arundel Gate?
http://www.themaynard.co.uk/restaurant/
Try the St Pauls Hotel. Not cheap. but it is good. We had a bar meal in the lounge, very good service and very good food. The Yard restaurant is very good too, for an evening meal. If you really want cheap then Tony's Cafe, top of Commercial Street. Another reasonable place is the restaurant/cafeteria @ top floor of Castle House Co-op. Personaly I'd opt for St Pauls.
StillWaters 24-04-2007, 13:58 Hello Pattricia!
I like the Strines Inn (off the A57 going out towards Ladybower) and the Bull's Head in Ashford in The Water - they're both nice gastropubs in good locations. Strines is especially nice in summer when you can sit outside. Towards the centre, I like the Wig and Pen in Campo Lane and for a celebration The Old Vicarage in Ridgeway which is the best food I've ever eaten. I'm not sure if the Old Vicarage does lunches but I've been there for dinner and it was amazing - set menu at £50 but absolutely worth every penny! Hope this helps,
StillWaters

SparklyShoes 24-04-2007, 23:27 i kow its had some bad reviews but i really enjoyed lunch at ha!ha! bar, really good service, very quick and nice food! Then again we do tend to go for the late lunches as neither me nor my friends are a fan of waiting too long for food!
