View Full Version : Legion Of Frontiersmen
This is a memory of my dad who used to live at the bottom of Lydgate Lane, Crookes. He's 90, so goodness knows if anyone can help.
He remembers The Legion of Frontiersmen who met in a large room at the back of The Old Grindstone. He recalls that they were ex-servicemen who served abroad in WW1. Everyone was eligible to join-except the French!(Brilliant rule that ought to make a comeback).
Their uniform was riding breeches with a navy blue tunic with chainmail epilettes and they wore a stetson hat, a bit like the New Zealand army.
So, who were they, what did they do and what happened to them?
amazing, they have a website, interesting stuff :0)

and i would imagine they are all "gone" :(
Back in the 60's I was in the ATC and we attended Remembrance day parades and some services at the cathedral, and one of their members used to turn up in the uniform you describe. He looked about 80 then, so I guess he's long gone.

Can you imagine walking home after consuming a few pints, and seeing that lot walking towards you? :gag:

david weston 10-07-2010, 23:59 Hi Mort, I'm out here in Portugal and attended the funeral of a friend last year and that of his wife a month ago. At each sad event was a chap in a uniform. I asked him whom he represented and he said The Frontiersmen who he said had been founded in Canada and that he really should be wearing a Mounties' style hat instead of the peak cap he had on. To be honest, he looked a little over bedecked with medals and trimming. The uniform was navy blue and he wore spurs. I looked it up on the net and got nowhere. If I see him around I'll mention your site. One of my teachers from Burngreave School, Mr.Rodgers who taught music, lived at 26 Lydgate Lane in the '50's, did you know him ?

I lived in Saskatchewan, Canada in the early 60's and I remember seeing the organisation known as the Frontiersman, (in fact, I had forgotten about them until reading about them on this 'Thread'). *** There are 'Commissionaires' here in B.C. that work as crossing guards, crowd and traffic control at large events and also at polling stations on voting days etc, correct me if i'm wrong, did'nt the Frontiersman fill a similar roll?
