View Full Version : Nice doggie walks with cafe/food place
Hi,
Really wanting to get out somewhere Saturday , somewhere abit different (I'm in S6) but unsure where to go. A nice long walk followed by some nice food in a cafe or somthing would be nice.
Any ideas please?
Thanks
vickylisa 24-02-2010, 10:09 padley gorge is lovley and you have a cafe at the end xx
Can you let your dog off the lead there? Will gogle it now, thanks x
fatboyslim 24-02-2010, 10:22 Nice walk from Endcliffe Park up to Forge Dam... cafe at the end or continue further up to the Alpaca farm at Ringinglow again this has a cafe.
FallenAngel6 24-02-2010, 10:56 Rivilin...huge walking area and nice cafe ploned in the middle of it, LOVE rivelin.
slimsid2000 24-02-2010, 13:24 Depends on how far you are willing to travel. Didn't you ask about beeches that allow dogs a while back? Anderby creek in Lincolnshire might be good. Locally - Rivelin perhaps. You need to watch out for lambs at this time of year and make sure your dog is on a leed whenever lambs are about.
SpeedDemon 24-02-2010, 14:42 Rother Valley - great walk round the lakes, and a cafe :)
I wouldn't let your dog off at Padley Gorge if I were you as there's a v high, steep drop down to the gorge. It's a lovely walk though :)
bogwoppit 24-02-2010, 16:36 Ringinglow is nice - rather then walking from Sheffield I recommend getting the bus from town (I think it's the 41 but don't quote me) then getting off at the pub up there and walking back into Sheffield. There is a cafe at the Mayfield alpacas at the start, one at Forge Dam and one at Endcliffe Park.
It's all down hill which is why I recommend it this way round!
Park at the Three Merry Lads here (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=three+merry+lads&sll=53.374778,-1.577225&sspn=0.014696,0.055189&ie=UTF8&hq=three+merry+lads&hnear=&ll=53.374676,-1.582375&spn=0.014696,0.055189&z=14), and access the Rivelin Valley from the footpath in the field behind. Dogs are allowed on the tiled area in the bar (though we towel down Brude thoroughly, and take a clean blanket, and he's allowed to sit on the carpet area if he stays under our table)
There's the sportsman across the road too which is welcoming to dogs
We also walk along Totley Brook, before eating in The Cricket with the houndlet

Oooh thanks for that Strix - we're always on the lookout for dog friendly eating pubs, preferably which we can bus it to - yet to find one which does really good food but it's fun searching :)
Oooh thanks for that Strix - we're always on the lookout for dog friendly eating pubs, preferably which we can bus it to - yet to find one which does really good food but it's fun searching :)Well the TML and Sportsman are both a short walk further on from the terminus, but the food at the TML is all cooked from scratch, and is pretty good (not been in the sportsman for a while and don't know how they do their cooking)
The Cricket seems to have a different menu system every time we're in there, and having not been there for a while, can't vouch for what's available at the moment, but again, it's cooked from ingredients rather than being frozen & microwaved mush
Another walk we used to do was endcliffe park and on up through the green areas beyond, finishing up in the Rising Sun at Nethergreen, Fulwood Road. They do reasonable pub food. I think the pies are bought in, but they're good local fayre carefully sourced

Did the Rising Sun on my birthday last year - beer was absolutely brilliant but I didn't rate the food at all. I am veggie though and find sometimes pub food is focused around good quality, well sourced meat and veggies generally get something made with frozen veg chucked in the microwave.
Bob enjoyed a big gammon steak though!
Will definitely try the ones out near Redmires though - will check out if it's possible to bus it so we can have a bit of a drink.
Is the Cricket the one in Dore?
LUCYS MUM 24-02-2010, 20:36 walk up loxley valley from malin bridge to bradfield passing dam flask ,you can let dogs off (watch the river though ,quite high at the moment) there is a cafe just by the cricket ground at low bradfield - - a great walk and you can bus it back !
the Cricket, Totley (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=totley+cricket&sll=53.374676,-1.582375&sspn=0.014696,0.055189&ie=UTF8&hq=cricket&hnear=Totley,+Sheffield,+UK&ll=53.315442,-1.544008&spn=0.007358,0.027595&z=15), and the bus terminus is at the Cross Scythes a short walk away
I'm just trying to remember the names of the pubs in Dore we've been to - both of which do food and allow dogs, and are across the road from each other... is one called the Devonshire or something?
thanks for the replies! I think we will try teh endcliffe park one and carry on up as havn't done that one before. Do yuou know if you can take dogs in the cafe in Endlciffe park?
Thank you!
ratter71 25-02-2010, 08:57 Dogs are welcome in the millstone at hathersage, we took our westie for a run up round surprise the other week then dinner at the millstone.
The carpark at surprise doesnt take cash tho, its cards only
Do yuou know if you can take dogs in the cafe in Endlciffe park? No,but you can sit at one of the numerous tables outside... if you can stand the cold and wet weather!
The Lescar only a couple of minutes away probably allows dogs. They certainly used to. I'd ring and check first though as it's a while since we were last there
clarkettly 26-02-2010, 10:09 Have you used the 'Doggie Pubs' website - it's kept up to date with public contributions. Google 'Doggie pubs uk'. We've used it a few times & find it reliable source of info.
finnbear 26-02-2010, 12:03 Hi!!If you have a car I would really recommend driving to Edale as there is loads of walks around there and then you could go to the Ramblers Inn or the Old Nags Head..both dog friendly and muddy boot friendly and the food is lovely :)
Hmmm, we're off the ramblers since the new people took over. one of those places where you now can't move for 'don't do this' signs all over the place
last time we were in, two small dogs took exception to each other at the bar as their owners hadn't noticed the other dog. Everything was quietened down and they went in different directions. Two more people arrived with a pair of dogs, and they were asked to leave!!
Honestly  Those of us who take the trouble to take our dogs out walking know how to deal with them. We don't need treating like school kids...
... and it does make you wonder where the lairy crowd of letcherous blokes in there came from. Deffo not local, and somehow seemed to fit hand in glove with the management style :suspect: Friends of the new landlord/landlady?
PS - the food has gone WAYYYY downhill too
padley gorge is lovley and you have a cafe at the end xx
Ailsa loves Padley Gorge too
Tell you where else she loves: Cromford canal just outside Matlock Bath - its a lovely flat walk and theres a small cafe about halfway along - you can carry on walking along as far as your legs wil carry you or go back to matlock for fish n chips after, which is what we tend to do. I love matlock, it's like being at the seaside without the sand n sea
Other favourites: Stanage Edge, Castleton (you can take your dog in one oof the caverns, I think its Blue John), and I wish I could remember the name of the waterside walk near Lodge Moor/ near the dam
Oh, another one of Ailsa's faves is thee three dales walk (wish I didnt have the brain of an empty vessal and could remember where it is - the other half does the driving, I just go there and hike hanging onto an exciteable doberman)
Went to Castleton a couple of weeks back and one of the pubs is very dogfriendly whichh was welcome as we were freezing annd desperate for hot soup and a warm fireplace.
Nice walk from Endcliffe Park up to Forge Dam... cafe at the end or continue further up to the Alpaca farm at Ringinglow again this has a cafe.
yup we do that too, living at Hunters Bar
I wouldn't let your dog off at Padley Gorge if I were you as there's a v high, steep drop down to the gorge. It's a lovely walk though :)
never had any worries with Ailsa - she loves scrambling over the rocks and paddling in the water- we steer clear of the faster running, deeper stuff but to be honest, all she wants to do is run, dash through the leaves and generaly be a daft dobe. We love it becauuse even on a miserable day, its so protected from the elements and you can get a bacon butty n a hot drink down at the cafe.

we love Edale too and we'd forgotten about the pub there. There's another great waterside walk in Derbyshire that as soon as I can remember it will post about- theres a cafe in the car park at the start and at the other end you've got a place selling refreshments n sarnies. Only went for the first time last summer but it was lovely.
slimsid2000 28-02-2010, 13:28 thanks for the replies! I think we will try teh endcliffe park one and carry on up as havn't done that one before. Do yuou know if you can take dogs in the cafe in Endlciffe park?

hope you (and your dog) enjoy it:)
CafeAddict 25-04-2010, 22:06 We own a coffee shop/bistro at Hathersage called Elliotts and we happily welcome dogs inside and out. Several locals with slim dogs such as whippets, lurchers etc or very old dogs bring in their dog beds while they have lunch. Its ridiculous to be treated like a leper because you have a dog!
A recent comment in our Visitors Book called us the 'The best and poshest dog walkers cafe in England'.
Try us - you will be made very welcome.
Michelle Elliott
Longshaw estate, national trust place, opposite fox house. Lovely walks and very nice cafe. Was there Saturday and it was lovely.
