View Full Version : Decent Broadband required but NO telephone service
Hi, I've searched the site regarding this, but there are too many hits returned for me to wade through.
I am after a broadband service for my home.
I would like a decent connection speed as I am likely to be downloading large files.
I would like an unlimited download service (same reason) with a fixed monthly charge.
I do not want to change telephone service provider (this is my stumbling block I think).
My postcode is S6 1SD if that helps.
And finally, (the daft bit you were alll waiting for) I would like a service that is compatible with wireless broadband - I suspect they all might be, but I thought I better mention it.
Cheers,
N
Hmm, maybe you could try PlusNET (http://www.plus.net) they do unlimited 2 Mb and above connections for £21.99 a month, you don't have to change your BT line or number.. And as mentioned it's unlimited so the only limitation for downloading your big files is the size of your hard drive..
I have a blueYonder broadband connection with no TV or phone package... don't own a TV and only use my mobile so no need for either!
Not sure about whether or not they're in your area.. the website will tell you I guess.

BlueYonder requires cable though, and it's also an NTL service.. I hear NTL's service is on par at least with AOhell's for crapness and retarded tech "support" operatives...
SilentStatic 17-08-2005, 15:35 Pipex are good and fit your criteria, apart from I'm not sure about the wireless thing. I thought they all could be used with wireless
sheff_minx 17-08-2005, 15:37 We're with eclipse but I don't know about limits... PM Vini for that kind of info! I know its just internet though - our phone is still with BT and out TV terrestrial.
We have a wireless internet connection set up here too - you need PCI card or similar. Again I'm not sure but I think the provider is not a factor in setting up networks...
Telewest BlueYonder do your area:thumbsup:.
URL for availability check is www.telewest.co.uk/websales/availability/check_availability.do (http://www.telewest.co.uk/websales/availability/check_availability.do)

Pipex do a wireless 512k option afaik, I used to be with them up to about this time last year before moving to Wanadoo, if it wasn't for the hefty price tag of £46 a month for wireless I'd still be with them as I was more than happy with the service and only ever had to contact tech support like twice in the 2 years I was with them.

I presume you are talking about wiresfree and not wireless, as wireless is just something provided through equipment and not something technical to do with broadband.
Wiresfree means the broadband company don't provide you with the equipment.
So, it seems I have three choices;
Plusnet
Pipex
Eclipse
We have Sky+ and Sky at home, and I don't want to be giving them up, especially not for ca-bull.
So, is it purely a cost choice between the three above, or are there other factors I need to consider?
Thanks for the help thusfar guys.

Plusnet have now done away with the 12 month minimum subscription - leaving you to move house without penalty :)

I have been connected to blueyonder for last 4 years, never had problems and support was good on the only 2 occasions I needed them.

You can just get BB from BY though. You don't have to have any of the other stuff from them.

There is no min subscription but if you leave within the first 5 years you have to pay back the setup charge of about £60. They reduce it each year until after 5 years it has gone.
ive just had a lenghty process of deciding on broadband supplier.
i got it down to plusnet or eclipse (http://www.eclipse.net.uk/index.cfm?id=referrerredirect&type=broadband&referrercode=VINI).
i went with eclipse (http://www.eclipse.net.uk/index.cfm?id=referrerredirect&type=broadband&referrercode=VINI) purely because they offered FREE ACTIVATION and HARDWARE if you subscribed for 12 months.
had plusnet had free activation on a monthly contract, we would have gone with them.
eclipse (http://www.eclipse.net.uk/index.cfm?id=referrerredirect&type=broadband&referrercode=VINI) are totally unmetered with the option to FLEX (increase speed on demand) to 2mb.
we got one month of flexing free, after that its about 5p an hour to flex to 2mb, so not a lot if you wanna pull that 'special' file down in half the time....
also, the adslguide reports put eclipse (http://www.eclipse.net.uk/index.cfm?id=referrerredirect&type=broadband&referrercode=VINI) marginally ahead of plusnet.
eclipse (http://www.eclipse.net.uk/index.cfm?id=referrerredirect&type=broadband&referrercode=VINI) also offer free STATIC IP, which is nice :)

Blueyonder actually do 2 forms of wireless connection Rich and they have absolutely nothing to do with NTL

BY is not an NTL service at all. BY & NTL were in competition with each other until a few months ago when (I believe) BY "acquired" NTL as NTL were losing massive ammounts, month after month & subscribers were leaving in droves;).

They haven't merged yet.

Not yet, but watch this space at the end of the year.
re: Broadband service. You want Telewest Blueyonder, definitely the market leader in terms of broadband, and the speeds are also increasing very soon which is a bonus.
fnkysknky 19-08-2005, 19:35 Apart from Spyro working for them he does have a valid point - they are rather good :)
As for your choice - basically pick from just about all of them, for ADSL I'd go with Freedom2Surf - Pure IP packages are fixed speed with no download caps and their Connect packages are all 8mbit max with a choice of 2gb, 10gb or uncapped. Think you can get 8mbit max uncapped for £24.99/month on Connect Plus :)

lol just to let you know, I may work for them, but im not biased. Ill be the first to admit that there Digital TV side of things is an absoluete joke. Telephone line is average, but Broadband is out of this world.
fnkysknky 19-08-2005, 21:12 Yeah I'd agree although TV seems to be getting better - that's when the set top box actually updates the TV listings tho :)
