View Full Version : Making money from Paypal - is this for real ?
I got sent an email about putting £3.00 into the paypal account of the first person on a list of 5. I am then to forward on the email deleting the top person and putting my email at the bottom.
Obviously by the time mine gets to the top it should have reached thousands of people and I will therefore get loads of money put in my account.
To be honest I've already forwarded it on as I figured I'd nothing to lose but was just wondering if any else has heard of this or is it just another scam ?

it's a pyramid scam, illegal and eventually leaving the bottom layer of stupid people out of pocket by £3.
spyro2000 17-08-2005, 13:18 Yep same as Cyclone said, or in my case, just forward the email on and put your name in the bottom slot, but dont send any money.
As you say theres nothing to lose.
can i just ask why its illegal ?
and yeh thats what i did do, just forwarded it on but not sent any money !

a quick google search revealed this:
Why is it illegal? The reason pyramid schemes are illegal is that it is a mathematical certainty that the last people to enter the scheme will lose money. This means that there will always be victims. Also unlike gambling there is little or no opportunity for the state to regulate the procedures by which pyramid schemes operate. The circumstances under which pyramid schemes operate create opportunities for deception and fraud, and are common occurrences in pyramid schemes.

if you didn't put any money in, why would you expect anyone else too?
thanks for the info!
as long as i'm not at the bottom then i guess i'll be quids in !!!!!
EDIT : in answer to your question - i guess because some people are not as highly educated as myself and will fall for it (at least thats what i'm hoping!)

i doubt that many of your friends are going to be stupid enough to give you money. Afterall, you didn't give anyone any, and you've not even heard of pyramid schemes, so why assume that your friends are more stupid than you?

True, I dont think anyone falls for these schemes anymore.
I have enterered my address into a couple of these forwarded emails in the past year and havent received a single penny. But once again, if I do get another email I WILL forward it on as there is absolutely nothing to lose.

the way this works is that i don't get money from my friends as they pay the 3 quid to the top person and i'm at the bottom when i forward it.
I have heard of pyramid schemes I just didn't know that much about them or whether they were illegal or not.
And I don't assume my friends are more stupid than me. I know they are.

you seriously think that you were smart enough to forward it without paying £3 out, but that you're friends, and people 5 times removed from you aren't going to do the same.
I doubt you'll ever see a penny, and if you do it's illegally obtained.

What if people are sending these with the sole purpose of obtaining your "contacts" list?
:suspect:

how can they obtain my contact list? The only other people that ever see the email is the people I forward it onto. It doesnt go backwards, only forwards.
exactly. and what does it matter if someone gets the contacts list ? its only a bunch of email address you could probably get from anywhere
