just asking for a bit of advice on behalf of my husband, hoping someone on here might be able to give him some advice, because the jobcentre are useless.
my hubby is 42 years old and has worked in the construction/building industry for around 22 years.
he has done almost everything that you can imagine, starting off as a labourer and working his way up to become a machine driver (telehandler and tracked 360 digger).
he was made redundant in 2008 and since then he has been looking for work every day, with no luck.
his cscs card has now run out, so we went to the jobcentre to ask them about getting it back, however they only seem interested in helping the 18 - 24 year old age range. all the courses that they have are aimed at them, and to date my hubby has had no luck in finding anyone who can point him in the right direction. the only thing that was once suggested was that he contact college and hope that they might be able to get him on a course.
my hubby doesn't feel that this is the right thing for him, given the years that he has worked in the industry, but now he has no idea where to turn.
does anybody know who might be able to help or give him any advice about this, or suggest who might be able to point him in the right direction?
my hubby is desperate to get back into work and is willing to do his cscs/cpcs card again but doesn't know where to get help.

He may need a key worker....tell him to ring SOAR on 0114 2440401... just explain the situation... they will sort him out or point him in the right direction..

It's like that where I am as well. I had to take a lesser paying job and start my own business on the side to make ends meet.

Good luck and good fortune to you.

Try the security industry, I worked in the steelworks for over 20years and I love this.

There are some lousy employers in this industry but I have a good one so be careful where you go.

I know a good many blokes who have come into this game as a stop gap until things pick up and have stayed.

Dont let your chin go down, there is something out there for you.

All the best

Which one do you work for, don’t you have to do 60hrs a week to earn a descent wage?

I work for a local firm I do 48 hours 4x12 hour shifts per week I earn £17,500 basic. If i want to do another shift I can, still gives me two clear days a week off. Whats wrong with that?Which one do you work for, don’t you have to do 60hrs a week to earn a descent wage?

the test for the cscs card can be taken at the dvla test centre on leapold street in town (sorry for the spelling) it is bang opposite the foutain bar at the side of the old virgin mega store in orchard square. other than that they do mobile test stations you can find out more buy contacting the constuction skill colage. i have been recently been in a simalar situation i have just been made redundant from a large construction company. i have been told by the nhbc that they can not cope with all the new build applications they are getting so i am hoping that went the daffs start pushing through (spring) there will be more companys breaking ground and starting building again. hope this helps?? just get back to me if i can help with any thing else

Who said there was anything wrong, I only asked a simple question and you answered it, 48hr basic or a 60hr week.

There is one at our place that does 6 12hr shifts and as Sunday off, one day he will be the richest bloke in the graveyard.
