I remember it well. I was once given £20 to get some shoes from town. However, the night before I was due to go into town to buy the shoes, I was staying at a freinds on the richmond park estate. I had the twenty quid with me. That evening I did what most kids would do with £20 quid in their pocket, I spent the greater part of it on fags and rubish. My intention was to visit the friday shoe market early the following morning and pick up a pair of cheap shoes, hence no one would know the difference, I'd have a pair of shoes, and a couple of packets of players No 6!! brilliant!! The Plan was fool-proof, that is untill me and my freind overlaid!!!! We flew out of the house at about 9.30am and rushed to the market, only to find all the best shoes had gone. I eventually had to buy a pair of really naff shoes which I hated, I had to wear these shoes for months, still not all my memories of the market are bad. I once bought a great pair of Pods their really cheap. A graet Market, thanks for jogging the memory!

You had to get up about 5 in the morning to be in with a chance of getting the best stuff!

I remember that the boxes which were emptied onto the tables were mixed - some decent shoes, most of them ok, some totally crap. We used to whinge at the shoe fella to empty another box onto the pile and he used to make us stand there for ages going "not yet mate, gotta let 'em sell down first". Git.

Crikes those were the days ... Friday morning you always made sure you didn't overlay so you could get the "good stuff" cos let's face it there was some rubbish on there!

I loved it too because as a typical woman it was fantastic to get a pair of shoes and a handbag to match as there was also a stall that did cheap bags too ... can anyone remember it?

Went there so many times. I think we also went on a Tuesday too. I remember the best trick was taking my Mum and giving her the odd shoes to hold - remember they weren't all tied together? while I dived back in to look for the matching pair or a better pair. Sometimes someone else would have the missing pair and then it was who would hold onto it longer. When I didn't have to go anywhere after I could just stay and wait. Got a few good pairs like that. Usually had to trudge back up through town to catch the bus to school.

That was YEARS ago. My best mate used to go before school, and bring in her bargains. I have been left school for 18 years almost!

I remember it well! I was told that they were shoes that had been worn by models for only a few minutes. Remmber coming home with a pair and dad wanting to know why they were almost worn out! Always seemed to have hundreds of the same shoe. Still got up at 6am to get down there before school though. :hihi:

one or two gems in a shoe pile of tat. like someone earlier i also got a pair of pods. i remember though most times i thought that the pain of getting up so early[very hard for a teenager]was too much given that quite a few times i went down, there wasnt anything remotely wearable

I'd been told the same tale, texas...

The other tale I was told, which to me seems to ring much true-er, was that they were shoes that had been taken into cobblers for repair, and not collected by the owner.

The Cobbler disposed of the shoes (As per the notice they usually displayed which read "Any shoes not collected within X months will be disposed of") by selling them to the people on the shoe stall, and folk like us would buy them.

I've had some good shoes off the stall, and I've had some rubbish shoes in my time.

But what puzzled me is how they got so darn many of the same shoe... did everybody who bought that style of shoe take it in to the cobbler, and leave them uncollected, to have so many of that style on the stall at the same time? It's all a bit strange.

When did this market stop? I went to it a couple of times last year on King Street - only bought one pair though as not a lot of choice... Mostly 2nd hand with a few others that were slightly damaged...
