I don't normally like Oasis, they've done some catchy stuff however I've never been tempted to shell out for owt.

But I rayte like this song - and the video is amusing too.

Yup - for the first time in a long time I like an Oasis song.

Two points which might shed some light as to why I like it:

a) it doesn't sound like Oasis (in style at least);

b) instead of ripping off the Beatles they've decided to take a leaf out of the Smiths/Morrissey's book with the song title with its inherent pun.

Oasis - arty?

I presume it's a one-off. Not seen the vid and not arsed in doing so but yes, I like the song!

Yeah it's ace! Sounds a bit like The La's. When the video starts, watch for the kid kicking the football. He totally wipes out on the floor, well funny!

Sounds very similar to a Kinks song, Sunny Afternoon.

How unlike Oasis to steal ideas from other bands :hihi:

It's a fabulous song - love it:thumbsup:

Didn't realise it was Oasis when I first heard it. I thought it was brilliant, and nearly fell off my chair when I heard who it was!

Like people have said though - it doesn't sound a bit like Oasis at all. I can't even decide whether it's Noel or Liam singing, it's so different!

Having said that, I can hear at least two familiar songs in there, so Noel's still up to his old 'borrowing' tricks. One of them's "People are Strange", can't think at the moment what the other is.

Still, nice one, lads!

PS Noel's gone up in my estimation after last night's Britpop interview - I thought he came over very well - he's obviously lived and learned, and come through as a much more mature person.

HATE oasis, and when I heard this song, I found myself singing beautiful south 'This could be rotterdam....' to one bit, and then 2 other sections of the song, I sit there racking my brains to think of what it reminds me of. Well not so much reminds me of, but copied off. Oasis are so unoriginal. If only I could get rich and famous by taking a few sections from different songs and bunging it together. I'm going to V this weekend, and I shall be watching Chemical Bros while Oasis are on stage!

I don't really like Oasis but I'd rather see them than the Chemical Brothers.

As far as dance music goes, the Chemical Brothers are pretty good - but I'd rather see Oasis.

You're very welcome! I still can't remember the other song it reminds me of though.....

Just heard it again, and the other song it reminds me of is "Wheels on Fire"

Someone said the other day on the radio it sounded like a German marching song, and that's very true too!

Still great though

The chords in the introduction are very similar to part of the White Stripes song which starts, 'oh, I think I smell a rat......'
Noel sings it, StarSparkle.

Cheers, Lord Snooty

This could be a new game to play on Christmas afternoon when everyone's too podged to escape - "How many other songs can you hear in this Oasis song....." Fun for all the Family!

I afraid people have got the wrong kinks song. The song they have ripped off for this one is Dead End Street. The intro is pretty much note for note and if I was Ray Davies I would be looking at a co-writers credit.
Still it is a good song.

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong, the Chemical Brothers are brilliant at what they do - particularly when they work with Tim Burgess!

And I remember when they were mates with the Manics..... that'll do for me!

It's a good song, but not the best on the album. If you like this song then buy the album.

The best tracks on the album (IMO) are, in this order:
1. Mucky Fingers
2. Keep the Dream Alive
3. The Importance of Being Idle
4. Love Like A Bomb
5. Turn Up The Sun

Class album, their best one since Morning Glory (although I still like Be Here Now no matter what anyone says).

Also, while on the subject of Oasis, a random fact for you. Johnny Depp played slide guitar on Fade In-Out on the Be Here Now album.

Indeed he did!! Great song too! They played Turn Up The Sun to start at the Manchester gig and went down a treat! Keep the Dream Alive and A Bell Will Ring are such good tracks, even though they were written by Andy and Gem.

Awww, cheers, Puressence!

And congratulations to you on your musical taste

Just out of curiosity - what is the remaining band in your Top 3? My other favourites are Marion, the Clash, the Only Ones and the Smiths, although the Manics hold the unassailable no 1 position for me.

Stay Beautiful!

Love The Smiths! What's Andy Rourke doing these days? I know Johnny Marr was in a band called The Healers and Morrissey did his own thing.

I heard this song on the way home a few minutes ago and have worked out which previous work is the main 'blueprint'. Predictably, perhaps, it is by The Beatles. Check out 'Being For The Benefit of Mr Kite' - the same rhythm and tempo, the same lugubrious plod. The main clue is at the end of the instrumental break in each song; before going back into the verse, both sections end with a short burst of staccato piano chords (essentially triplets over a 2/4 rhythm for two bars, fact fans) I'm sure Oasis put this in both as a nod to the former song and to provide a little pleasure to trainspotting pedants like me.

The Oasis song also features the 'premature guitar break' idea pioneered by The Beatles on the dreary 'Nowhere Man'. Squeeze paid their own homage to this device on the superb 'Is That Love' from 'Eastside Story'.

I am now going to get back on with my life - cheerio 'til next time!

Oh dear! Look....why is it everyone compares Oasis to other bands? Why doesn;t anyone say Blur or BRMC or anyone. There's only a number chords you can play! Outrageous statement.:loopy:

Everyone seems to forget that The Beatles themselves borrowed heavily in their early material from black American artists and even from contemporary acts such as Donovan.

If Oasis are such cop outs or rip off artists then why are they still arguably the biggest British rock and roll band around at the moment? How many other 90's acts still have sell out tours, sell out stadiums 3 nights in a row or have consistent number 1 hits?

LordSnooty

Erm....if you care to read my post a little more carefully you may appreciate I have not 'had a go' at Oasis. I used the term, 'a nod to', which is hardly damning. The only band I took a pop at (no pun intended) was, in fact, The Beatles. Of course, you are right to say The Beatles nicked bits of, or the feel of, lots of other peoples' songs. Paul Weller is a terrible song thief - 'Changingman' is virtually identical to an ELO track, the opening guitar riff at least - but it's still a great song!

Oasis admire The Beatles and I see the influence of one over the other as a good thing. I'm sure if history were reversed, a little influence may have run the other way...who knows? For the record, I enjoy the Oasis song and think the 'references' are deliberate, and fun. The Beatles influence helped Squeeze too, because, like Oasis and Paul Weller, they could stir it into their other influences and their own talent.

So shut up.

Why so defensive? Oasis have always admited the infleunce of the fab four on their music.

Everyone compares Oasis to "other bands" because they made a career out of re-doing the back catalog of the most famous band ever. More people have heard the Beatles, so more people know that Oasis haven't written any original tunes.

Blur were (perhaps) worse for ripping off others, but they just changed the references every few albums. First up they sounded like the Stone Roses with a bit of a shoegazey-edge, then plundered The Kinks and The Small Faces for a few albums, before moving on to a sound inspired by American indie (with a pretty strong Bowie influence throughout). Perhaps the reason Blur sounded a lot less jaded than Oasis were a few albums in was because, unlike Noel's lot, they were prepared to take more risks with their music (with varying degrees of success, it has to be said).

BRMC were a pretty ropey JAMC covers band last time I checked them out, can't say I've heard their more recent output.

Well I saw Chemical Bros and they were amazing. Most of the group I was at V with watched Oasis and some said they were dissappointed. They also said they couldn't hear anything, because the whole crowd shout out all the songs and this drowns out the music. Bit like going to a beatles concert then I guess!!!

Thought there would be a Beatles comparison somewhere!

I agree in a way, its annoying when you can't hear anything. Especially when they play Wonderwall and DLBIA, although the songs generally 'do mi head in' you cant hear the guitars cos of the crwod singing but you can't stop that I suppose. Just a picture of how popular the songs are. You wouldn't get it at a Magic Numbers gig or James Blunt (:gag: ).

True. Although, I also watched the Proclaimers and it was funny when everyone sang along to 'I would walk 500 miles....'!!

Incidently, the Magic numbers came on the stage for the last song Chemical Bros did. That was pretty cool. I was worried, for a bit that Noel or Liam might leg it over and perform their collaborations that they did with Chemical Bros, since Chemical Bros finished after Oasis. Luckily they didn't, it would have ruined it for a lot of people!!!!

My boss said exactly the same thing. Shame really, although if I'd have been there I'd have been singing along too so probably wouldn't have noticed.
