Hi,
I found this forum when googling for an Acer laptop for my daughter and found the resultant thread really useful.
She wants to be able to use a laptop to connect to the net from any room and run word.
she won't be running any serious games and doesn't want to pay more than about £500 -£600,
At present she is on pay as you go ( with BT and her ISP is Tesco).as she can't justify the cost of broadband.
My question is: can she use a router?? for wireless connection using pay as you go and if so what does she need in the laptop (I'm thinking of the HP NX6110 would this do?)and the telephone plug?
Hope this makes sense

Davy,
If she is using a PAYGO "diialup" connection - which means the laptop will be configured to dial up an0844/0845 number to access the internet (e.g. freeserve/wanadoo), then it will not be configured to connect through the router.
If a connection to a router was required, the laptop needs a network card (usuallyt built in these days), cat 5 cable (patch cable) to plug into the router from the laptop, a new - "alternative" - connection profile using the router configuration set up details (usually another icon to click to connect to the router as opposed to dial up) and MOST importantly - permission from the owner of the router (access rights) to get a connection into that router and out thru't tinterweb.
Hope this made sense!

Reccomend the HP NX6110's very highly, our sales reps have given them a good bashing and they have lasted very well. and are a steal at the price they are at now. Its not (cheaply) possible to run wireless dial-up, and you can get broadband now for £14.99 a month, maybe thats more suited to her budget?

I'd take a careful look at what the dialup is costing. When I switched to broadband my internet related bills came down £15 per Month.
Have a look on eBay, I have seen dialup routers for reasonable prices in the past but there aren't many about nowadays. You'd have to couple this with a wireless access point as well and by the time you've finished you'd be better off using a wireless ADSL modem, it could even work out cheaper.
