View Full Version : Can you be arrested for dodging potholes?

I know there have been other threads on this but I have just heard that Sheffield Council is not going to repair any more potholes till after all the bad weather has finished. The only ones they will do is what they consider as dangerous, and to be classed as dangerous they have to be over 20mm deep.

What is the worst road in Sheffield though?
I nominate Chapel Road in Chapeltown.
This is not just because of the occasional big hole it is virtually the whole length. It shakes the car to bits and it is impossible to avoid them. If a copper was following you on here he would probably arrest you for dangerous driving because you are weaving about that mutch dodging the holes.

Anyone else been down it recently

Drink a gallon of ale, then drive down that road again. The natural swerving caused by the alcohol will mean you miss every pothole, giving a smooth ride.

As a bonus, you will greatly reduce exessive wear of your shock absorbers.

Keep some tinnies in your car. That way, if the drink wears off and you encounter another road with potholes, simply pull over, neck the tinnies, and off you go.

Simple!

If you do get pulled tell 'em its "vehicle sympathy" and ask them if they remember that part or their advanced driving training.

Its the section of training following "how to be a condecending git to motorists" at all times.............:D

A few weeks ago I saw a streetforce team actually teeming tarmac into some potholes that were still full of ice/snow. A couple of days later the ice/snow had gone and so had the tarmac

The council must have finally cottoned on that filling potholes in this weather is just a job creation scheme.

In order to prevent this thread ending up at two thousand pages long, I suggest we restrict our comments to examples of Sheffield roads that do not have large potholes in them.

..... I can't think of any.

Mine would be also if I could get on it - new neighbours who seem to choose to park cars and vans across it it preventing access at all hours of day and night. No potholes on it though - I guess cos I can't use it just now!!!! :gag:

You do know that you can legally move them if you need to?

Also if they are parking across a drop down pavement/kerb they can be ticketed.

Hallowmoor Road. It makes me weep. I keep reporting, they keep filling, just days later, they've opened up again. I understand fully that with the freezing weather, that it's pretty futile, but they've damaged my car. Most times you can't avoid them because of the parked cars for the two garages.
I got me hopes up when they began resurfacing the junction in the summer, but that was all they did...the junction!! That wasn't really all that necessary! It's the main drag that needs the work.

Yeah as it did me,i hit one hard and the next day set off for work and car was making a funny noise.I took it to garage and a something pin had snapped(cant remember) cost £50 day after went to get front wheels balance.the guy told me he couldnt balance on of them as it had a dent in it on the ridge, they where alloys. It was all obviously caused by the pot hole.I then went home and got my camera,i went to the pot hole and the B*&^&*$s had filled it in:roll:

I've reported Fitzwilliam St as being dangerous.

If you travel down it coming from the Washington Pub towards Charter Row there's several massive holes that send the car off in another direction if you don't have a tight grip.

Just outside the Salvation Army there is a section of new road that meets the abandoned bit of the surface that results in a huge bump. I try and go onto the other side of the road just to avoid it.

To say its a city centre road its a complete disgrace.

Yes I mean pot holes in the road, they are on nearly every road in those areas as I live in firth park and we have to travel that way and the roads are horrendous.

just slow down and drive according to the conditions, then u wouldnt have to swerve about, just make use of your reduced speed to make minor course changes.

Can people please remember that you can only claim for damage if the pothole has been reported and recorded with the council.

Councils can't be held responsible for not repairing potholes that they are unaware of.

Also it will be argued that given that everyone knows there are pot holes everywhere at the moment, there is no excuse for hitting one! :o

I shouldn't have to slow down, or alter my journey to keep my cars whole front end in one peice!

i got stopped by the police once (a few years ago) on woodseats road at 5am whilst on my way to work.
they thought i was drink driving because i was driving slowly and swerving over the road.

they looked a bit bemused when i told them i was actually sober as a judge and was just trying to avoid all the vast chasms in the road.

after about 10 mins of questioning they let me go on my way and told me to try and drive in a straight line in future!

The council should do more checks then, its the councils road and they should keep them in a good condition, after all we all pay road tax if we own a car that we use so the money we pay in road tax should be spent on repairing roads but it just goes into general government funds. There is no excuse for the pot holes to be there in the first place, what do they do if you dont tax your car? Clamp, remove and crush, thats what they do, its the law that you have to pay your road tax if you have a car on the road, it should be law that the council repair the roads so our cars dont get damaged!

I wrote a letter to my MP about the state of the roads. The reply I got was 'we will not be filling anymore pot holes in Sheffiled as Sheffield is due to have a major revamp on all roads throughout 2011' So 1 year to go plus another year of delays = 2 years of my car getting battered every morning coming off my estate!

I went to see a friend at Halfway the other day and the state of Halfway Drive is laughable. Apart from hundreds of potholes that they tried to botch up when the road was wet ! (its a major bus route (every 7 minutes)) the main problem is the sunken drain covers that are over 3 inches deep :loopy:
If someone on a bike were to try and ride over one of these I can guarantee that they would be thrown off. All the holes that they filled in are now back again and the tarmac that they filled them with is all over the road causing another hazard that is worse than the original hole ??

On the subject of pot holes. Has anyone tried billing the council for a repair to a vehicle e.g Tracking, because of pot holes?

Yep, I tried.

I sent a letter to the council, they responded stating it had been sent to their insurers. Their insurers contacted me, I had photos, receipts (2 new tyres and tracking done every 2 month, yet my tyres still got scrubbed) and geometry reports saying my car was a ok etc after having tracking done, then what it was like after x number of weeks.

I got a letter back from the insurers saying the council had look at the road in February 2008 and observed no fault with the road (even though this was in 2009).

You can even see part of the worn surface on google maps near the junction, just outside the shadow of the tree:

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=&sll=53.420543,-1.310248&sspn=0.009565,0.027466&ie=UTF8&ll=53.419814,-1.305791&spn=0.000598,0.001206&t=h&z=20

Suffice to say, it was me who had to fork out for the repairs.

Even though there was 'no fault found' with the road, they're now resurfacing it...strange:confused:

Slightly different angle - but my OH once got pulled up by the police and breathalised for trying to avoid raised manhole covers on the outer ringroad.
He blew negative btw and well released without charge !
