View Full Version : Tradesmen who don't turn up
I wondered whether others on this forum have problems with tradesmen not turning up for appointments, not calling to give an excuse and then just ignoring emails, texts and calls. I can understand how prior jobs can overrun or the wife gets sick, but how much effort is it to give the customer a call and reschedule? I've been trying to get a Landlord's Gas Certificate and have been let down twice in the same manner. Why do tradesmen agree a price and a date/time and then just act as if they didn't? Do they think that occupiers leaving work early in order to let them into the premises is no effort? Why do these tradesmen participate in this excellent forum acting as a 'friendly' local guy and then act this way? Are you a little embarrassed CORGIGASMAN?
Honeysuckle 17-02-2010, 11:08 Yes I totally agree with your comments and for this reason I don't use tradesmen off this forum anymore, its sad that a few spoil it for the others who I'm sure most are very reputable.
We have used a few people from the forum and they've turned up. Some people might not but that would be the same if you just plucked a number from yellow pages. At least on here you can look for recommendations. I notice quite a few gas safe people on here getting praise so maybe give another one a go.
mmitchell 17-02-2010, 14:59 I can understand how you must feel when this happens, i have been in the decorating trade for over 24 years now and i have always turned up to look at jobs on the correct date and times, although if a problem does come up whether i will be late or can not make it for what ever reasons, i ensure i let the customer know straight away so we can come to another arrangement. a lot of the forum members who i have done work for will be able to say the same about me.

Well you not on your own. It works the 'other way as well'. I used to be a working proprietor and so needed to make appointments with prospective customers in the evenings and at weekends. I have lost count of the times I have turned up to find no one at home.
After working all day there is no pleasure in sacrificing your leisure time for people who just cannot phone you to cancel and re-arrange. They don't even sound apologetic when and if they ring you back.
So Royboy, I can understand your frustration but it is not only tradesmen who are unreliable.
try c+f plumbing his name is mark 07970 881548
tezndave 17-02-2010, 19:00 its a load of rubbis these traders
my wife know him for years and he is gas safe registered and hes good as you can see by the add i put on before
jimll fit it 19-02-2010, 08:35 I take offence to what your saying. Just because you've had one person who just happens to be in the building trade you are making out we are all like that.
I make a point of not arsing people around rain or snow if i say ill be there ill be there.
I've also used other tradesmen and its a small minority who don't turn up.
The thing i've found when talking to customers from the forum, is that people are quoting to do jobs that are way beyond them and when it comes down to it they don't turn up as they know they they'll balls it up.
It's simple. They don't turn up, they don't get the business. If they operate in this way then it's pretty much a given that this will translate through to the quality of work and as such, they won't last long
Before posting this, did you try contacting corgigasman to discuss and find out if there was a problem.
It's a little unfair to post this without giving him a chance to explain.
I haven't seen any posts over the last couple of days from CGM, hope everythings OK mate.
Complete-Heat 19-02-2010, 19:13 I'm keeping him busy Dan ...;)
I don't think 1 missed gas cert should have caused such a tirade of abuse.
steve's a top bloke, does high quality installs, servicing, and repairs. One of a few of us now who gives FREE advice on here and has saved many lots of cash.
pattricia 19-02-2010, 19:16 Do you realise that there are CUSTOMERS who say they are going to be in for tradesmen, when they are NOT ? Time is money to tradesmen, they are self employed and work from day to day, so remember sometimes the boot is on the other foot .!

reading what the op says, he has tried e-mail, texts and phone calls
matssundin13 24-02-2010, 01:34 I tried to get an aerial engineer to come out to my house, we had a time booked and day etc and he never showed - i even tried ringing him the day before to confirm we were still ok for the appointment. About 2 hours after the appointment, I got a text saying he'd be there in four hours, so I told him not to bother.
I then arranged an engineer from here to come out, he has since been out to do the work, but found his attitude and customer services skills somewhat lacking, although the quality of his work was acceptable. When I asked if he could re-visit to sort out a small problem he had caused, I was met with a tirade of abuse.

Was there any abuse? Or just a customer annoyed at a broken commitment with no prior warning?

Should that make you feel better when you're waiting at home and they never show?
I agree with the OP, it's very frustrating and it's often for the smaller jobs as there's probably not a lot of profit in them. I've struggled with this before to the point where three decorators didn't turn up, and each time it takes days to arrange for the next one to come.
On the other hand, once you've found a good and reliable tradesman, you should keep their number and use them every time you need someone.
Sam @ Dearne 24-02-2010, 22:40 Hi Roy,
Make sure you tell everyone that I turned up! :hihi:

Exactly! Pay up prompt and keep a good relationship with a good tradesman and he will be glad to return.
you also find a lot of the people on here want jobs doing for peanuts and spend 10 quid on the phone ringing 100 people to get it done 5 quid cheaper.
ricgem2002 27-02-2010, 08:30 and heres an example 2 of my builder friends have experienced from the same customer just this week. they have both been asked for a full house refurbishment on a seriously fire damaged house . the quotes have been given to the customer who in return will pass them on to the insurance company . the customer has now been in contact with both the builders and now wanting to know what they will both work for to get the job done regardless of the quotes he just had he now wants a labour only price ? i have informed my friends that this is just a insurance scam and the owner is going to make a false claim using the quotes they supplied (while writing this its just occured to me that if he goes ahead with this work with someone else using one of my friends quotes how will they know? ) so the answer imo is the customer is not allways right

Thanks Paul689 I contacted Mark and he did the job as expected and I will happily use him again. We made an appointment, he ran into a delay and called me to change it and he then turned up ontime and did the job! Just what we all want from a tradesman! I agree with the comments about some customers being unreliable but surely the key value of this forum is to both praise and criticise tradesmen so everyone gets a chance to find a reliable and reasonable one. Let's keep everyone 'honest'.
Hi Roy,
Make sure you tell everyone that I turned up! :hihi:
Sam if you were 'Gas Safe' registered you would have been the first person I'd have called! But you did eat all my biscuits! Hope things are going well for you!

Maybe they get lots of free minutes on their phone plan.
