My Grandad is currently suffering from pleurisy - the coughing has lead to him displacing a vertebra, which is being exacerbated by the fact that he has two greyhounds reliant on him walking them every day. Although my uncle helps when he can, he works shifts and can't always be there.

I managed to convince him that letting someone take the dogs for 2/3 weeks whilst he gets time to recover and look after himself is the best course of action. I would love to have them here, but we have two housecats who are scared of their own shadows, nevermind a pair of greyhounds!

Both are knocking on a bit now, and Rosie (Brindle female) has occasional urinary incontinence, and is on propalin syrup to try and counteract this.
Blue (blue male) has no health issues at present. Both dogs are VERY friendly, and are good with children and other large dogs. They will chase cats/small animals though.

Obviously all expenses will be met, food supplied etc - but he really can't afford to put them in kennels at the moment, we are still trying to sort my late grandmothers' estate. He is in Fulwood, S10.

I know its a long shot, especially with rosie's bladder trouble, but i'd feel awful if i didn't try. :(

Couldn't you manage to crate them at yours - at least it would stop them chasing the cats - and as long as the beds are thick enough - greyhounds don't need to move that much.

Its hard to find people who could foster 2 dogs - but agree - anything is worth a try, but think of a backup plan if not.
Hope grandad feels a bit better soon - pleuresy is to terribly painful.

Would they be able to stay at his house if somebody (more than one person?) was able to drop in to walk/feed/let them out/clear up accidents?

It may be easier to find help than find somebody willing to sacrifice their own carpets ;)

That's what I was thinking - if they are calm in the house, then really it's only the walking bit that he needs help with? That would be much less upheaval for the dogs, and your grandad would still have his dogs keeping him company while he recovers.

Aye, like you say, its unlikely that i'm going to get anyone willing to take two dogs into their house, and perfectly understandably! - although ideally, it would be best to have the dogs well away from him so he doesn't have to get up to let people in and stuff.
I can't crate them, as far as i'm aware, they've never been crated (although, i suppose as retired racers, they must have at some point)

I think that the best we can hope for is someone to help him walk them :)
Although, i might see if i can get them in kennels for this week, and then give him at least a week to settle then see about someone helping him walk them?
I'm too far away in Walkley (and can't drive) to go twice a day to do it, its an hour trip each way on the bus!
Linzi, i'll give you a ring in a bit, i had my tonsils out last week, and my painkillers are taking a while to kick in today!

What a dilemma! I wish I could help but we already have 5 lurchers. If it was one greyhound we could possibly squeeze them in but not two.

I also live in walkley and could give you lifts up to his house if you wanted. But I do work full time so it would be evenings. A dog walker would be a good idea, we have one at lunchtime which costs £5 per day.

Another idea might be to contact "Greyhound Gap" or put a post on their forum as they may have someone in south Yorkshire who could foster them for a short spell. They are very nice.

Lillyland,

I know your grandad, and the dogs. Sometimes see them when walking my dog on a Sat morning.
There is a large group of dog owners that meet up with their dogs on the Spider Park who may know of somone who can help out. I'll ask my wife to mention it if she see's them in the morning. One of them does that sort of thing for a living and doesn't live far from him. I don't know how much she charges but it might be an option. I'll find her number and let you have it.

I want to say a massive thankyou to everyone who has got in touch about this,
I have booked the dogs into kennels for 2 weeks starting sunday to give him a rest.
I would really appreciate it if i could organise some people to help with the walking of them once they come back to him? - even just once or twice a week, cus i think he's struggling to do more than walk them up to the woods near spider park.
My PM box was full last night, so i've lost 2/3 pm's from people regarding this thread :(, if anyone could forward them back to me that would be great!
I can't believe how many people know my grandad - haha, he's definitely a local celebrity it seems!
Thankyou so much for all your help again!
