After listening to a descussion on the radio this morning, I realised I do "know" most of my neighbours. I know their names and I talk to many of them. I have lived there for 11 years now, but It didn't take me long to say hello to them.

I wondered what everybody thought about this. It doesn't matter if you don't actually know their full names, but can you borrow tools etc..

Yes I know all of my immediate neighbours - and any new ones that move in, I make sure I send em a Christmas card so that they know who I am too! If you put in a bit of effort with people it's usually worth it.

My next door neighbour cuts my hedges for me and they can all be trusted to take in any parcels that arrive in for me in my absence. I think having nice neighbours that you can have a little chat to and do things for each other is what makes a road nice to live in.

Living in S5, it's easy enough to remember all the names of my neighbours.

All the elderly men are called Uncle, and all the elderly women are called Auntie.

Just as well, because my memory ain't what it used to be. I think it's all the aluminium in the local water supply.

We know our next-door neighbours, really nice couple.

I think they are happy that we now live next door to them though, they've had some wrong'uns in the past.

Don't tell Phil Redmond.

He'll start yet another cheesy soap opera

Psycho bitch sounds like a bit of fun. You got a photo?

I know my neighbours. The house right next to us are lovely. Always helpful though they are slightly barmy. But adds to the variety of life.

The other house on the other side - well they are ok to say hello to but crikey they either love a good shout or their marriage is doomed. Sadly they don't live close enough for me to listen in when they are booming in the garden.

As I am now trundling about with a pram I have met lots more neighbours and it does cheer me up when we wander about getting 'hellos' at lots of garden gates.

LOL - we have nicknames for our neighbours too :

Gobby-mare (because she is)
The Vampires (never seen them in the daytime)
Ma Baker (has 4 sons who we think are gangsters)
Apu (looks like the guy in the Simpsons who runs the mini-mart)
Twin-pack (a white guy who thinks he's Tupac)

I dread to think what they call us.

I know my neighbours, and have a great time with them.

Further up are Sally and Ade. Then Further down is Pete.
Along with numbers 22, 24 & 26 we regularly sit down in our back gardens and share a few drinks.

I've got marvellous neighbours. My immediate neighbours are terrific. They let me use extra space on their washing lines, take in my parcels, etc., and we put the wheelie bins out for each other. Always having a natter with them.

Don't see as much of the folks in the two houses on the other side of my house, but we're always friendly when we do bump into each other. One's a professional mountaineer, and the other a new qualified chiropodist. We're always talking about Andes and feet. :hihi:

I'm really lucky with my neighbours. Smashing lot.

I know most of my near neighbours.

When my family moved to Stannington 9 years ago it was just right really, I met 3 guys (of similar age) who are still really good friends of mine today.

We say hello to the neighbours on either side who are both lovley people, but the rest of the street are less friendly, now I am the 'nasty woman' because I objected to the free for all on our parking spaces on our drive !

When I was little we knew everyone on the street as 30 out of the 35 houses had children at the local primary school and we all used to play out together and basically had the run of the whole streets gardens (except for the nasty old witch at number 26!) - wasn't the "old days" either - we moved there in 1992 and left 5 yrs ago.

At my parents we know our neighbours as there's only 5 houses within about a 3 mile radius (2 of which belong to millionaires - useful neighbours :heyhey: )

Just moved into a house in SharrowVale in July - met the neighbours to the left and next door but one fairly quickly whilst drunk but not seen much of them lately. On the other side, nobody's moved in yet so we don't know them!

Yes, there's Smashy n Nicey on one side who have regular prolonged garage parties & play Motown.
Then, on the other side is Mrs Brady (old Lady) who, if she keeps interfering with our activities of daily living will be joining the heavy rock appreciation group.

I know all of the people who I share a gennel with.. our 4 gardens are all quite open so we see alot of each other in the summer months (although the family on the end seem to only come out at night - we sometimes think they're witches!)

But we get on really well with our nearest 2 neighbours.. put bins out for each other if we forget, share BBQs, have drinks together on balmy evenings and if we're ever missing a vital ingredient for dinner and the shops shut theres always someone to ask..

Its the best relationship I've ever had with neighbours.. maybe cos this is the first house I've owned.

The neighbour on the otherside is a deaf guy who keeps giving me stuff he buys at car boot sales.. nice enough but he gets a bit huffy when I tell him (nicely) that I don't want his junk!

We get on well enough with our neighbours to have emergency keys left there, and we have somebody elses set.

I miss my Peterborough neighbour who I had a vacuum cleaner pact with (hers washed, mine made mincemeat of her cat hair), and could borrow silly stuff off.

We once spent a friday evening re-planting my garden flags in hers and painting the fence (both sides) before cracking open her home made wine and throwing in a Pizza *sigh* (actually that's not true - the wine came out a lot earlier ;) )

We live on a six terrace block. We know all our neighbours and have an annual garden party. I feels as though I could borrow anything or ask a favour of any of my neighbours and yet we are not scarily friendly, for example, apart from feeding cats or admiring new DIY results, we have never been into our neighbours houses other than stepping over the threshold when asking to borrow something. Just how we like it, friendly, but not too friendly.

Oh and Muddycoffee - I know one of your neighbours too...

I know my neighbours to say hello to, but I don't know their names (apart from one). My grandad knew everyone in his street, and in the next street and the one after that. It used to take him hours to do his shopping because he kept seeing people to talk to!

Someone said more people watch Neighbours than know the names of their neighbours. I doubt that's true, but if it is, it's a sad statistic.

As Sam Miguel has said elsewhere, "Those cup of sugar days are gone". :|

As much as children break down the barriers, so do cats. I know most of the people in our cul-de-sac (40 houses) but most of them I met through their cats either scrapping or making friends with my cats.

I have the village watering hole (well, it's a water feature actually) where they all come on sunny days for a drink, and all of the humans need somebody to furry-feed when they go away, so we all do for each other.

For the same reasons I hold keys for 4 neighbours and 3 hold keys for me.

Oh, and BTW, the 'cup of sugar' days aren't over. I'm close enough to my neighbours that letting yourself in, borrowing stuff and leaving a note is perfectly normal and acceptable.

we have great neighbours on both sides.......

one we call Mr Clean, always washing his car, even takes off the licence plates, washes and waxes behind them before screwing them back on.

Other side is Edward Sissor Hands, he 's retired old fella. clipps his hedges 7am like clockwork.

I only know 2 of my neighbours. A lady accross the road and the girl next door. There's no-one on the other side til the students come. And we've helped another neighbour get his kitten off the roof a couple of times now but still don't know his name!

i know the names of all mine, there are 12 houses on a path off the estate road all built in 2 rows of 6 facing each other and we are all on friendly terms, we know each others names, borrow things from each other go to the local together sometimes and work permitting sit and have a drink in the garden and order pizza to share, last weekend when next door were washing their car they offered to wash my other halfs car too.
A couple of years ago we all mucked in to do some paint stripping when my front porch needed painting and we cut next doors front lawn and they do ours.
when we go away the neighbours take our keys and look after the cat, even down to closing the curtains at night and reopening them in the morning.

We moved into our house in November last year, and I'm sorry to say that although we say hello to our neighbours, we havent had a conversation yet, which is a pity because they do seem really nice.

Its a shame really :(

We might send them an xmas card though to see if that gets the ball rolling a bit.

I bet they think we are really weird as we keep ourselves to ourselves most of the time.

At my family home in sheffield I know every single one of our neighbours because we have a little car park/communal garden/square behind our houses which make 2 sides of the walls of the square.

Here in Manchester I know my flatmates but thats about it, the people in the other flats aren't very socialble.
