hi
one of our 12 week old pups has started eating his own poo. we have got him out of it when he is outside (if we are quick enough) but if he does some while we are out he still does. any ideas???
also the same dog dribbles wee alot on an evening, he is fine during the day and we still take him out after dark but it seems to just come out, he doesn't squat or anything. he could be playing or chewing his chew sticks and when he gets up there is a trail on the floor.
i have noticed he is very scarred of most things (we are thinking if calling him custard after cowardly custard!!! :D) and tends to run on his bed and poo.
i was going to mention it to the vets on his next check up in a couple of weeks but not sure wether to go earlier.

Would be worth checking with your vet but mum has a dog who does this (eating poo) and the vet said the trick is to pop a couple of chunks of pineapple on her food, the pineapple makes her poo really bitter and she stopped eating it. He told us as vulgar as it sounds it may not be disgested and if it smells like food she will eat it. Always worth making sure its not anything else tho!

sometimes you will not be able to get them out of this, I have tried pineapple chunks, tobasco sauce on the poo, picking up asap but sometimes when in garden playing on is own i cant see this), spoke to the vets about diet, he is on complete dry food that is perfect for bullies and he still does it.
he doesnt have a deficiency in anything and is very healthy and well looked after, this si something that he just wil not stop.
hope you get this sorted as i know what a nightmare it is!

Its natural for puppies to do it from what ive seen. My dog (well my mums now ive left home) did till he was about 6 months old.
Everytime he went to do, we'd shout him and say "no!!"
as the other post said, alot of their food hasnt digested properly.
I wouldnt worry so much about that , as disgusting as it is
but the dribbing i'd mention to your vets, because if hes doing it when hes not excited/scared that doesnt sound right
From what I understand (and I don't have a huge wealth of experience in coprophagia!) it can be quite normal in puppies and they grow out of it.
It can be due to the dog not digesting enough nutrients and 'trying again' but this isn't really as common as once thought.
Be careful that you don't chase him off or make it 'fun' otherwise it'll be even more inviting to try cos it makes you play with him!
Try the pinapple chunks, otherwise it's a case of teaching a very good leave and making sure you try to be around whenever they need to go to the loo and hopefully he'll grow out of it.
You could condition a negative response to poo so they don't go near it but I personally would steer clear as it could cause so many more problems!

What food is he on? My dog went through an adolesent poo eating stage but it was only bakers poos that he went for (freakish red ones). Never his own and never any of the more normal coloured poos.
He stopped after a week so Im afraid i cant offer any advise. :(
