Seems to do what I want it to do and on the two occasions I've needed tech support it was rather nice to have some support that actually made sense.
I've got a friend who tried AOL and couldn't believe the amount of garbage that swamped their computer at least Blueyonder doesn't do that.

Been with Blueyonder for 6 months or so now and I'm very happy with their broadband service.

I've just heard they're upgrading me from 1mb to 4mb for free soon too so I'm even happier!

Rich was just trying to say you'll be better off with BY than with AOL. Though if you're already on DSL rather than Cable (I know you can use AOL through cable now) then try looking at Pipex. We're more than happy with them, so much so I have an adsl pipex connection here and at home in the north east!

Had 5 different addresses within cable areas in Sheffield and Blueyonder is a whole lot more stable than it was in the old days (read 4 years ago) so it's well worth going for it.

The regular upgrades in bandwidth are a welcome bonus as well.. It's just a shame that they tie you into a 12 month contract.

Comparing BY to AOL though is a little erm... well... a bit like comparing ferrari to tonka.. :)

Cable-based broadband is better than (A)DSL - based broadband, as it doesn't rely exchanges and cheapy mirofilters.

Count yourselves lucky that South Yorkshire is in Telwest's patch, and not NTL's - although they're merging, so watch this space!

Going through a dedicated cable broadband modem is better than using the TV box, as if the box crashes, it takes ages for the 'pool' to retrieve a new IP address!

However, we had it thorough a wireless router/modem, and had it hidden behind the telly, with the RJ45 cable going from the TV box to the internet port of the modem, and wirelessly transmitting the internet to the two computers, but now the second computer is non-internet-ed, and now use a Belkin router/modem with a (datastream ADSL product - Virgin) - well, it was free to set-up, and have the line 'redigitalised' after NTL pciked up their equipment.

As for Telewest's Blueyonder, people say it's great.

So, in short ask for a cable modem, and additionally, this is much easier to connect to the modem/router (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=9813562898&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=48700) to the pre-provided modem, than it is to via the TV box.

Note: If you do fancy going suarve, and getting a router, ensure you get the one with the RJ45 port (for cable BB), and not the RJ11 (for DSL).

HTH

Just to throw irrelevance in here, this would be the one for ADSL: http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=52244

('G' and 'B' networks are for another time)

I'm very happy with BY. On the rare occasion that there has been a problem the support was great and the problem solved very quickly.

Bulldog - perhaps a more appropriate name would be "Bulls----".

AOL is for inexperienced people - although they have scraped their own software - and besides you could round having to use it.

Blueyonder broadband is great, in the 2 years I have had it I have never had any problems, if it wasn't owned by the incompetents that are Telewest I would never worry about anything going wrong again but as it is i'm always a little worried. (mainly before the bill arrives)

I very happy with Blueyonder too.

Regarding the NTL merger, the recent bandwidth increases are accompanied by a statement promising no download cap, so for the time-being at least I think BY is the best option.

AOL have a very poor reputation but it's often the case that reputation lags behind what a company is actually doing. AOL were pretty poor a couple of years ago but my brother uses them (to my initial horror) and they've actually been quite good

Horses for courses really - if you want to download a lot of stuff or play online games then BY is definitely the best bet. If you only want to use the Web and email then AOL should be fine

Us geeks and techies have always seen AOL as a bit of a joke, hence the strong initial response to the question. But like I said, their service isn't too bad these days

Blueyonder is brilliant.

For optimum performance howver, make sure you get the wired instllation. Dont be talked into any kind of wireless or self installation kit.

I used to have a Pipex wireless 512k broadband connection, in fact they were my first broadband provider ever until around this time last year, because at the time they were the only broadband provider in Sheffield that served this far up Stannington, all the others (including AOhell) said we were too far away from the exchange at Wadsley Bridge

Absolutely right. Spyro

Blueyonder is rock solid. And I have my Cat5 cabling in in my house no bother, if anyone needs any off my drum I still have loads left....

And like everyone else I am looking forward to my imminent upgrade to 4mb

Yes and another one here.

Tech Support is knowledgeable and helpful

the service is virtually uninterrupted, and I am looking forward to my 10mb/s connection soon!

don't have their telephone or TV though, which seems to be a bonus.

being an inveterate non-payer of bills, whenever I do finally phone to settle 3 months outstanding charges they sweetly inform me that my service will be restored within 24 hours.

Problem is, the service was never taken away in the first place. They always sound surprised and then mystified to learn that I have not been cut off. I'm not sure why, by I seem to escape the non-payment radar as a broadband only customer.

This is not a new thing. There are loads of non paying customers who still get the broadband when there is a restriction. Its normally only the broadband. If you had the phone and Digi TV, you can be assured that they would be resticted, however broadband is a different story for some reason.

We can't get Blueyonder (no cable in Stannington apparently) so we're stuck with ADSL providers.. Trouble is though, apart from Wanadoo and Plusnet hardly any of the major broadband ISPs come this far up cos the sodding exchange is at Wadsley Bridge! If only Pipex wireless DSL was less than £46 a month, that was great, only ever went down twice in the 2 years I had it.

The relatives at Walkley have Virgin, which I think is somewhere on the way to you - but it frequently cuts out, as the exchange at Wadsley is such a distance.

Blueyonder (http://www.blueyonder.co.uk) is the best you can get for sure. and they will soon be offering 10 meg broadband for £35 a month with no caps.

My mate was telling me hes about to be upgraded to this 10MB service and his bill is coming down from about £50 to the £35.

Sounds like the best in the marketplace at the moment for sheer speed. I was with BY for a couple of years and they were spot on.

Alas now I moved out to the sticks (Kiveton) and best we can get out here is 2MB ADSL. I use pipex by the way and they are okay but their 10GB per month newsgroup download limit and crap upspeed (256k) lets it down a little.

This mate of mine actually works at Plusnet so when my 12 month contract is up I'm hopeful he might get me a better deal.
