I'm not a mountain biker myself anymore, but alot of people throw themselves around Grenoside Crags, you could have a cycle up there and see whats happening :)

I've had one or two in my group talk about going to Wharnecliffe Woods/Grenoside. I'll post back if we set a date in Sep - you'll be welcome to join us.

I could be interested in this. Are you talking about off road biking or just riding out from town on roads?

the ride me and pran did was from Hope - we got the train out and then went to Castleton, up Cave Dale and back through Edale, but the date in Sep is something less ambitious in Wharnecliffe Woods to establish the level of new riders. I personally wouldn't want to be doing too much road distance on the mountain bike or anything too severe down hill. I haven't been to the crags so don't really know how demanding it is, but is seems as if others reckon there's a lot to offer for everyone. maybe billy and sv500 have slightly different plans?

i was over that way yesterday, but only passing through to morehall and broomhead resovoirs,
theres some brilliant ups/downs in wharncliffe but i like to stick to the xc trails where possible ;)
ive done the crash thing too many times,so im sort of slowing it down
and no doulbt come the first climb.....il be at the back
but il certainly be up for the meeting,

OK folks, I'm going ahead with the Wharnecliffe recce on Sat 10th Sep from 2pm if you fancy joining me. There'll probably be one or two others from SpurIntoAction (the club I'm starting up). We'll make this an easy ride out to get us going. We'll meet in the car park on the left just as you enter the woods from Grenoside:

From Sheffield: Take the A61 north to Grenoside. In Grenoside turn left at the traffic lights up Salt Box Lane. Turn right onto Main Street. Drive past the Old Red Lion on the left and out of the old village. After about a quarter of a mile turn left into Wharncliffe Woods Car Park.

Will be looking to do similar stuff maybe once or twice a month depending on level of interest. Let me know if you're interested.

Cheers

Definitely would be up for joining you for some riding up in the woods. Only been up there once and did one of the (nearly) marked trails. Didn't get to explore any of the singletrack though.

Am not around for a few weekends though. Riding other areas, Polaris etc. PM me and I'll send my email if you are starting a local riding group. There seems to be a distinct lack of any MTB forum for the area. Tend to join in quite a few rides with the wmmtb crowd, although never been to Cannock with them.

Planning an evening ride tonight from Fairholmes if interested.

If you'd like to go on a mountain bike forum, the sheffield uni (http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/cycling/)have one. I'm sure they'd not mind non students tagging along.

JJ ...

I'm keen to be as inclusive as possible and have suggested an age range of 21-49 for the group.

Hopefully there'll be opportunities for those who want to try something more difficult to do that without splitting from the group. When I've been skiing the big boys can cut corners and meet up with those who have taken the track further down. As I haven't explored Wharncliffe yet i don't know if this will be possible. My partner will definitely be on the easy routes and I won't be doing anything too nutty ... there's also someone who doesn't give the impression of having been anywhere near a bike ever who may join us, but who has just done a 250 mile trip in Europe!

Jerry ... Hope you had a good ride from Fairholmes - what a fantastic evening for it!!! Can't believe you travel to West Midlands though to get a ride when we have so much on our doorstep.

Biking isn't my only interest so I won't be going out too often but I'm hoping to build a group in the Sports and Social Network I'm putting together ...

Top ride last night, apart form the midges on holiday from Scotland. Forgot the Avon Skin so Soft - DOH. The track down from Hope Cross to the Snake Hayridge Farm was awesome in the dark, although it felt less 'full on' than during the day. Perhaps not taken at the same pace though.

Don't worry, the guys from the W Mids come up this way for the riding, not visa versa!!

That is definitely possible in wharncliffe. Theres a particular bank where all the "gnarly" downhill is, you can do these, or you can scoot round the nice fire road and meet up at the bottom.

I'll definitely be there - may have someone else coming along with a hybrid. I guess there'll be a range of abilities on this first outing - but we can tailor our own rides to suit ourselves and still keep the group together.

To confirm meeting place - car park in Wharncliffe Woods on left as you leave Grenoside on Main Street (about a quarter of a mile into the woods). http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=433250&y=394250&z=2&sv=433250,394250&st=4&ar=N&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf

Dah - not gonna let a bit of rain put us off. Will be doing an easy trail somewhere in Derbyshire next month and maybe build the group up to doing more challenging stuff ... see you soon

I see there are a fair few MTB'rs on here and so thought I would just tag a little note to this post.

Some of you may ride at Wharncliffe woods, well there are new and exciting developments stirring up under the Crags.

Over the last few months The FC has been liaising with a local group of riders who have formed the Wharncliffe Riders Collective (WRC). The FC along with WRC and input from no other than Sheffield’s own MTB Legend Steve Peat, have developed a plan for a new sustainable 10k all year round XC route. Initialially 3 kms of the trail are to be built which had the go ahead last week from the local forester.

The WRC will also be developing the nationally famous Down Hill trails that are the main draw of Wharncliffe, this will include new signage to find tracks, additional technical features and new high speed berms at the end of each route to segregate MTB's from other users of the trans pennine trail.

The WRC are keen to get everyone and anyone involved in Sheffield’s premier MTB location, over the next few weeks "Dig Days" will be arrange where anyone is welcome to come along, grab a spade and help develop the trails.

At the moment the WRC are centered around the Gravity Slaves website at www.gravity-slaves.co.uk pop into the Wharncliffe forum to join the WRC.

cheers and happy riding

Simon.

Dear Billy the cat,
I am writing to you to ask a few questions that i have about Mountain Biking. From the messages displayed, it is clear to me that you are a greatly expierienced rider.
I myself enjoy a good ride over the weekend but am clearly not as expierienced as you, and i am sure that there is a great deal that you could teach me, as long as you take me under your wing, and promise not to ride me too hard.
My main question is rather simple really, what sort of level of fitness would i need to have to undertake a ride with your group? I have never really ridden in and around the peaks, and enquiring as i am unsure weather my stamina is as good as yours.
I understand that you must be a good and committed rider, and it must release a great deal of your pent up stress and frustration. I too enjoy social activities to release the stress and frustration which builds up over the course of the week, and would enjoy finding a new activity, possibly mountain biking, to help me do this.
It could well be that we indeed have more in common that just our enjoyment of the "great outdoors" and riding.
I eagerly anticipate your response to weather i will indeed be fit enough to join you on a good ride.

billythecat
22-05-2006, 14:37
Hiya Fluffy, It would be of great interest to meet with you sometime - You are right in thinking that i`m an experienced rider, used to relieving my pent up frustrations in the "great outdoors". However i am very open to the idea of passing on my knowledge of good hard riding to anyone who is willing to take up the challenge.
Look forward to hearing from you!

Not sure if anyone will be interested, but we have set up a local riding group, doing regular rides on Thursday evenings http://stwpeakssheffield.myfastforum.org If you would like to join us, just come along and/or drop us a message.

Alternatively, if anyone wants to find a couple of people to ride with, it's a good forum for that too. Quite a few ad-hoc rides around. You'll probably get more response than on the Sheffield forum.

Do you cater for unfit beginners Jerry?

Linda, I reckon I'd be up for a cycle sometime if you're interested

The rides we do tend to go a the pace of the slowest rider, making sure that we all get back together and everyone having had a good ride. Occasionally, we split the group mid ride, some doing a longer ride, others shorter. Whatever happens there will at least one person in the both groups who is experienced and has a good idea of the route. Sign up to the forum and come and join a ride.

Billy the cat doesnt race, he merely bikes for the love of the wind in his hair! He is an expierienced rider and would be greatly offended by your silly comments! How rude!

Nothing Fluffy and Pink about your reply, you should get yourself a bit of a life luvy, you sound like your from out of town - the sticks, somewhere cold, wet and desparate. Us townies thrive on challenges although I notice 'Billy' has not come back on this one..knows when hes met his match I expect!

Anyhow if anyone fancy's a day out sprinting we ride out to ladybower from Holmesfield and back via Fox house every sunday aft.

Doubt if you'd be able to keep up Pink and Fluffy as we ride hard as we can, grinding away, pushing to the maximum as a lot of the route can be uphill.

Keep on pedlin everyone

There are regular night rides organised by the Sheffield branch of the STW users (http://stwpeakssheffield.myfastforum.org/), among others. There are regular rides on Thursday nights, starting both locally and in the Peaks. Just depends who's leading / going on the ride. Check it out.
