View Full Version : Are you also fed up of inappropriate self-promotion?
Now I love the Bohemian restaurant, but I am so fed up of them forever "touting" the restaurant on here.
Anybody else feel the same?
So much so it is putting me and a load of friends off even going back there.
It's a good restaurant, great food, lovely staff so let the food speak for itself
STOP TOUTING !!!!!!

Yes it's a bit overly desperate, isn't it?!
It is often fairly inappropriate to the thread in question too... for example there was someone asking for the best place for a Sunday Roast in the City Centre... :suspect: they were certainly not after a veggie place 2miles away
When threads in the Wedding group get hijacked by adverts like that, those threads are removed.
I'm all for businesses promoting themselves... but sometimes when they post on inappropriate threads it does start to grate.
shazzamattazza 09-02-2010, 07:31 What so businesses can't promote themselves?
There is promotion, then ther is overkill and this is a very fine line thay seems to be crossed here..
As Katie_23 quite rightly said, someone asks for a good restaurant for a Sunday Roast and up they pop, they are a veggie restaurant for gods sake. I don't think people generally include a Nut Roast in Sunday Roast otherwise they would specify, vegitarian.
Dumdom is quite right puts me off going if they are so, so desparate . I've been several time to The Bohemian and loved it every time but makes you wonder why they hijack almost every thread when someone asks for a recommendation.
neeeeeeeeeek 09-02-2010, 08:23 Sure you don't all work for Loch Fyne? If there is a single establishment on here that over promotes its self, thats it!!
Good luck to the Bohemian, it's bloody hard work running a small independent so I don't have a problem with a bit of self promotion.
neeeeeeeeeek 09-02-2010, 08:24 Infact I am going at the weekend so I may start a thread about it if it's any good.
:)

Haha... or maybe it's an incredibly sneaky cunning ploy BY The Bohemian??!!
All publicity is good publicity right?!
And most threads that are started with negative comments about something invariably draw out all the people that disagree and stick up for it!
;) :P
If you think that a user is overstepping the mark of what is appropriate on promotion then please let the moderating team know by pressing the report button.
The mods aren't psychic, they don't read every thread and because we are a reactively-moderated forum they're reliant on people pointing them at trouble spots. Please help them along by sharing your opinion on people who break forum rules with them :)

Yeah good point meds - although I'm not sure if they are being so bad as to actually break rules... it was more of a personal gripe of mine (I can be a bit pedantic!)
Like when someone says for example "can you recommend me a pub that serves good food & is dog friendly" and someone actually bothers to waste their time by saying "XX is a great pub - I've never tried the food though, and I'm not sure if they let dogs in..."
I'm like :loopy: yeah, well done! Great help.
Raychul69 09-02-2010, 10:47 To be honest haven't been on in SF for a while now but in the last couple of days have seen inappropriate posts. ie someone looking for a function room for a party and they pop up??
Now they've started serving meat I may take a wander down there as I have heard their food is very good :)
BOHEMIAN 09-02-2010, 13:24 Thank you to all those who have supported us in this thread.
It's hard enough being a small independent bussiness with out getting torn apart on this forum.
If at times we have posted soemthing in middle of trying to serve customers and have got it wrong then i must appologize!! so i do! there you have it!
As far as promoting the bohemian then i dont feel bad at all about trying to get the word out. how many indipendent vegi or vegan places last without making the most of whats at thier disposal??
Are we the only catering bussiness posting on this forum??
Further more we only try to reply to those post that are relevent to the bohemian ie sunday lunchs, room hire ect ect. yes may be some times we might be off the point, but may be we can help out for another occasion!!

Funny.... only 9 posts on the forum and slating someone !!!
I find Bohemian posts useful, informative and not repetitive.

Actually I was not slating them, as I have said I enjoy going there, BUT they do seem to hijack a great deal of threads, many which are inappropriate.
Room Hire for instance, do they have a room to hire,? I wish they did because then you could have more people there to enjoy what they do well, vegitarian food.
All I have said is that I think it reeks of desparation, and as a person who frequents many restaurants it makes me wonder, WHY.
Most restaurants survive on "word of mouth" recommendations, not by reading that the restaurant is good, and certainly not from the restaurant itself over promoting itself.

Rooms to hire are available upstairs. Answering questions or giving information to post which have relevance to The Bohemian is not hijacking. We dont want to enter a slanging match but if we are put down unfairly we will respond. You say you love the bohemian but give negative and unfair comments. Most of our business is word of mouth and the forum helps us as it helps many other businesses.
stonecircle 09-02-2010, 15:51 I would much rather see honest self promotion and its nice to see the menus etc. What I hate are new forum members going on about how great a place is.
Take note Glamour Chic, now 4 posts all about how wonderful Christian's restaurant is. This is a sure way for me never to set foot in there!
Its a fine line really isn't it.
There have been a couple of places on here, in my memory, that have endlessly self-promoted and not come off very well in the end as people appeared to have got a bit sick of it.
On the other hand, the Bohemian is, I think, a local independent business and is surely worth more of our support than, perhaps, the chain restaurant that is also hawking itself on every "going out" thread at the moment (eg; Question: "I want somewhere in Hillsborough that caters for vegans" Answer:"hello, here at Loch Fyne we're neither in Hilsborough nor vegan, but hello! we're here, come and eat here!!")
Perhaps if the Bohemian were to input something to the forum rather than just use the free advertising they might not seem as irritating (and I speak as a fan of the place)

This is a pointless thread - the Bohemian is a business and businesses have to promote themselves in some way so go figure why a Sheffield business promotes themselves on a forum about Sheffield. And yes I know that I'm echoing what others have said above but this thread annoys me! :hihi:
Dum Dom indeed. :)
If a business is any good, it doesn't need to promote itself, it's customers will do it for them by telling their friends. Generally the more a business advertises, the more desperate it looks.
shazzamattazza 10-02-2010, 10:27 What so businesses can't promote themselves?
Apparenly not, "Warning to businesses and tradesmen - this is not for self advertising and any obvious spurious recommendations will get trimmed."
The above statement, by a Mod is on the “Recommended businesses and tradesman” thread, surely The Bohemian is guilty of doing this?
the_rudeboy 10-02-2010, 11:19 I don't particulary mind a bit of self-promotion so long as it's upfront. What really pee's me off is when people pretend to be customers of a particular establishment in order to promote it.
donuticus 10-02-2010, 11:30 There is a user that is constantly touting their "talent" in certain threads. It becomes nauseating. The occasional plug I can handle but when the purpose of vast swathes of posts is merely to promote someone or something then you should buy advertising and help to keep the forum going for everyone.
