Hi,
I have just installed xp home on my pc after a reformat, previously I used w98se.
I am using Firefox and Thunderbird although IE and OE are installed
I have installed JRE 1.5.04 from the Sun website so that I can view (trimar) a fish website BUT I can only view it using IE not Firefox..
I have done the following:
start,
control panel,
Java icon,
advanced tab,
applet tag support,
check the Mozilla and Netscape box,
apply.
I get a warning telling me that its unable to change the browser settings and to check that Firefox/Netscape have been installed properly and/or that I have permission to change the settings.
One reason, amongst others, that I changed from W98se was because JRE wouldn't install on my machine.
Can anyone help toenable me to view this site usin Firefox ?
Davyboy
Have you checked that Java is enabled in your Firefox settings daveyboy?
In the Firefox window select Tools>Options>Web Features. Check that Enable Java and Enable Javascript are checked.

Tried the same thing on my XP machine with FireFox and the same Java engine. www.trimar.co.uk is using a java applet called fphover which is an animated button. If you look in the java console after you load the initial page, you'll see a load of errors starting with "class fphover: class not found". All this initial web page is trying to do is put up a button for you to click to take you to this address:
http://www.tropicalfish.org.uk/home.htm
If you go there directly, it doesn't appear to use the fphover class again and you can access the rest of the site. If you do a Google on "class fphover not found" you get a whole load of info about it not being a good thing to use on web sites.
What a horrible site.
Any designer that would force you to download and install Java just to push a button to get into the site wants shooting. I sure hope that isn't a paid-for job.

Thank you Eviljock (and Nazo) for the help and explanation.
I'm afraid the technical terms you use are way above my head...I can follow a set of instructions to tweak my pc but I'm not into web design!!
The problem was driving me mad!
Using the url you gave works fine in Firefox, why didn't they use that in the first place and why does the original url work in IE?
Or is that a mystery ?
Could you possibly explain why I can't alter my browser settings?
Davyboy
Snipped because forum won't allow me to post urls even if they are in your post!

Hi Davyboy.
The reason Internet Explorer copes with a lot of junk that other browsers reject is that it implements a lot of non-standard stuff that makes it "easier" to construct websites. This allows Mr W. Gates to tie users into his products and block out the competition.
As to your inability to change the Java settings: if you read the text by the settings and the error messages you get, you'll notice they refer to "Mozilla" and not Firefox. I presume Java is looking for the original Mozilla browser and not its newer offspring.
I've learned to use what works for whatever site I'm trying to access. Some will only work with IE and if you want in, you have to use it. Thanksfully most sites these days seem to work with Firefox so I tend to use that for 99% of my browsing.
Happy surfing!

I suspect whoever made that site didn't really know what they were doing. It's probably an amateur effort made by someone who had FrontPage on their PC and thought they'd have a go at making a website. Then they got carried away and decided it'd be cool to have some flashy effects on their links but didn't know how to do it properly so used Front Page's hover button effect which is horrible.
It probably never occurred to them that doing so might stop people from being able to use their site. Just goes to show if you want to have a web site for your business it's worth paying someone to do it properly.
Thanks Nazo and Eviljock.
I always seem to think it's my incompetence when things go wrong
Nice to know it's not!
