View Full Version : ITunes: transfering music from one laptop to another. metaphoria 04-02-2010, 23:18 Does anyone know how this can be done? Can itunes sort it for me, or do I have to buy an external hard drive to do this? tallanddopey 05-02-2010, 08:07 just transfer the files across and put into any place you want and then go to the, File/Add folder to library (or at least i believe its that. and itunes will just work from those. souldriver 05-02-2010, 09:34 you can use your ipod to do it. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1329 swarfendor43 06-02-2010, 22:33 Having rebuilt someones XP Home PC recently they wanted their I-tunes saving - assuming you don't have more than a DVD's worth (4.7 Gb) and you have a DVD-burner, iTunes has it's own archive utility to save your collection to DVD. Best regards, swarfendor43 Kidorry 07-02-2010, 07:12 Can you transfer them by flash stick? HarryBustard 07-02-2010, 09:41 Can you transfer them by flash stick? Yes - but the iPod method described in the link will differ somewhat - obviously. The exact method will, as alluded to in that support article, depend on how you have your media linked into iTunes. See this (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showpost.php?p=4397901&postcount=13) for an overview - albeit in the context of a different issue to yours. In a nutshell you install iTunes on the other computer and replace the library which it creates with the one from your old one - including putting any files not in the iTunes folder in exactly the same place on the new one as the old. (Beware, however, differences between Windows versions.) So, if you have "external" data in the latter case you'll need to have the same user name on the new computer. If you get this wrong iTunes will tell you it can't find the items and you'll have to point it to them - one by one - something you won't want to do. If it does go pear-shaped then just start from scratch - i.e. create a library, add any purchased items via your iPod using the option offered when you connect it to your new computer then re-import your other media. In the latter case remember to set the relevant preferences accordingly before you do this. Finally, all this and more is already available on the Internet so if you have no luck get searching. metaphoria 09-02-2010, 21:38 Thank you kindly, helpful people. |
