View Full Version : Shave, wax or pluck??
is it me or do i have tendency to the "perverse" topics.
the story is that my daughter invested in an epilady type gadget for the old hairy legs.
this machine inflicts so much pain it could only have been invented by a woman.what do others think are they any good or did i waste £50.
Jillybabes 15-08-2005, 10:41 I would never buy anything like that, Ive heard that the pain is excruciating, I girl at work had to bite on something to help with the pain when she was doing her more delicate areas, she also had to apply ice afterwards cos it was that painful. I will always shave my legs and never do the wax strips. I dont mind the hair removal creams, except when hair starts growing back, very itchy indeed! I cant understand why anyone would put themselves through pain to look good when there are easier ways, ok you have to shave more often but I would rather do that than look like a plucked chicken!
hiya,
waxing is soooo good....couple of seconds of pain, then all gone!! legs done about 3 or 4 times, and the regrowth now is almost non existent! and i use the veet strips, so do it at home....no problems.
will venture into a salon for underarms and bikini line very soon....tried to diy those areas but its physically nigh on impossible!! you need two pairs of hands for your underarms!!
Sue
ps. im 38 and only just discovered the joys of waxing......it really isnt that bad!
compared to faffing about with depilatory creams and razors.....id go for wax every time now!
Being a bloke, I like the au naturelle on women.. dont know why, but it looks great :)
And NO, I'm not some kind of pervo thankyou.
banesmabes 15-08-2005, 11:44 I wax and shave! I still can’t believe I can stand the waxing. I tried cold waxing years ago and it SOOO painful, and it bruised me in certain areas! But then I tried warm wax last year and it is so much better – only a fraction of the pain – plus much more effective. But I can never get every single hair, so I shave what I miss with the wax.
I would never use an epilator. Why would you think they were invented by a woman? I’m sure it must be a man who invented it – even if he did try it on himself and felt how painful they are he probably wouldn’t have cared, because he’d never have to use it again!
On another note – do men really care if women have hairy legs?

I've used an epilator since I was 14 & remember it hurting a bit at first but it hasn't done for years - The more you use it, the weaker & sparser the hairs get & it doesn't hurt anymore. Just tickles really!
I think they're great as they have all the benefits of waxing (no stubble, long time to grow back, no cut legs!) but you don't have to wait ages to get enough re-growth before de-fuzzing.
I even use it on my underarms, but wouldn't suggest that unless you're VERY brave! The first time was excruciating, but worth it in the long run!
They claim that shaving makes the hair grow in thicker and faster, but if that w'ere true there would be no bald men in the world !
Well it's a wax for the legs and bikini line area. Just feels better and is less faff from doing it with home products. But am tempted to try waxing myself so interested in those previous comments.
Shave under my arms because there is not much there and it's quick. But will I ever learn not to put deodorant straight after...:o
even i'm tempted now to try an American Pie The Wedding scene.

I know a few black women who do not shave their legs and claim that their boyfriends/husbands like them that way. Personally, I don't find it attractive.
I know a woman who never shaves her legs, and quite frankly they look awful.
I like just natural.................the fruit shop in crookes :D
I prefer to shave my armpits and wax everything else. It's so much quicker and really not that bad. I took a friend in with me once and I carried on talking to her all the way through. It doesn't bother me and the results are ace.
*Twinkle* 15-01-2006, 13:41 Ohhh my looorrrrrd... thought I'd dig this thread up since I have just inflicted such immense pain on my poor set of pins! :o :( Owwwwww!
I used to shave my legs but got sick of doing them every few days... so I got a waxing kit and ohhhh owwww eeee my legs are killing lol!
I've got such soft skin, I thought that I'd end up softer if I waxed... Right now I can't see it happening... My eyes are still watering! :help:
Ladies - really... just don't! :|

cloudybay 15-01-2006, 14:02 Why are women obsessed with shaving/waxing? I would rather stick pins in my eyes. The French can't be bothered, but yet seem to get rated as the most sexually attractive nation on the planet.Personally,I love hairy men,and have discovered that some men find hairy women a turn on, well, in certain parts !!

Hairy men don't bother me either, but I actually find that women not shaving is awful.

Same here, without a doubt!
I know I've moaned about the pain, but my legs smell absolutely gorgeous now... The stuff had peach/melon scent in it... mmmm! yummy!
GothicCharm 15-01-2006, 14:12 I don't understand something about some men I know. They have a problem with dating a girl who is hairy. But they also have a problem with knowing we shave
They know we shave but try shopping for razors or wax strips in front of them and they go all "I don't wanna know about how you defuzz" or "Why do I need to know about what you shave with" etc etc. One of them even got embarrased cause he found his sister's wax strips in the bathroom.
Does anyone else understand this?

Why? A friend of mine finds it a major turn on. So I'm not complaining................

I guess it's what different people prefer, the world would be a dull place if we al liked the same things.

Hey caprice, you ought to book a morning at castle beauty therapy for them to wax your legs for you.

Don't you think women are under far too much pressure to conform to ' The Perfect Body' by a variety of trashy tabloid publications, without us having to buy in to their ideal?

I think a lot of women are under far too much pressure to conform to what the tabloid's like to put out there, but I'm not one of them.
I don't shave my legs for anyone else only myself and I really don't bother what's put in magazines, I am who I am and people accept me for that.

So, who told us we needed to shave then?
Plain Talker 15-01-2006, 14:37 There's an interesting article in today's observer woman supplement about hirsutism.
Apparently statistics are showing women are getting more hairy, something to do with the amount of carbs we consume.

I suspect it goes even deeper than that. If the media and film can be said to have a predominantly 'male gaze' then over time it is male preferences that continually reselect and reinforce the representation of women based on certain characteristics.
Obviously male secondary sexual signifiers (body hair, prominent adams apple) will be unappealing, and will be represented that way. Equally, images of women that conform to culturally imprinted definitions of desireability, will be presented in a positive and even aspirational context.
I don't think the above is really an explanation of how depilation has become de rigeur, I think pure fashion plays a part as well. And lurking in there somewhere as a factor at play, is the weird and faintly sick male prediliction for women dressed in schoolgirl outfits. That's a Madonna/Whore figure IMO.

A pre pubescent schoolgirl? Or boy? Similar to the smell of a new car, nobody has ever been there before? The taste is unique, but ultimately, short lived?
the_rudeboy 15-01-2006, 15:52 Women started shaving their armpits around 1915 as sleeveless dresses became popular. Legs followed later as the hemlines rose.
LordChaverly 15-01-2006, 16:00 When I was living in the US I remember asking a group of young women what they knew about Britain. One of the things they mentioned was that British women didn't shave, whereas it was de rigeur in the States. I have no idea how they came by this information, as it was news to me.
ToryCynic 15-01-2006, 16:07 I'm not going to bother shaving... I'll just let it grow... (http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/kentboy/hair.jpg)

Is this inexpensive? I enjoy the effects of leg waxing but cant afford to do it all the time. Ive tried doing it myself but cant, Ive tried an epilady (excruciating). I wouldnt mind trying the castle place ... I take it that its Castle college where the trainees learn their skills.
BrainThrust 15-01-2006, 19:24 My friend had it done there, he loved it!
Maybe it was the student beauticians though...

Normally about £6, I get mine for £3 as I'm my daughters client.
Their facials and manicures are great. They're all done on a Friday morning at 10.30 for my daughters class.
I'm going this Friday for facial, and manicure.
I'd say to defiantely ring and book.

I use a Braun Silkepil, for my legs, it took a couple of useages to get used to the odd electric-shock/ hair-standing-on-end sensation, but it's fine now. And it's a heck of a lot less messy than waxing. (And cheaper, too).
Re Castle College:- yes it's student beauticians who do the work (same as in the hairdressing side; it's trainees) but rest assured, they are supervised, by the tutors, so you are in reasonably safe hands.
It's a reasonable price, too, to have beauty treatments, or your hair done.

Why are women stupid enough to bow down to what they think men want? As if they really care?
I'm actually having my legs done for charity in the next 2 months...and I'm a bloke!

I think it's more of a case of looking bad infront of OTHER women. I would definately be embarrassed to show my legs in the ladies at the gym if they were amazingly hairy!
Hauntedyorks 16-01-2006, 10:22 well its like arm pits..............
we have all got used to not seeing fuzz...
:D
waxonwaxoff 04-08-2006, 11:51 Has anybody waxed unsuccesfully and then used hair remover? I highly recomend you dont. Does anyone hace a soothing cure for burnt bits lol.
Agent Orange 04-08-2006, 12:32 I waxed my legs many years ago for charity and...... ouch, did it hurt. All you ladies that wax have my sympathy!!
Jabberwocky 04-08-2006, 12:33 Singe!
Its far more....you know..
ok ill leave...

Funny you should say that. I once tried this unconventional way of removing leg hair, by accident of course, when my jeans caught fire. The side of my leg was bald for ages, which would have been ok if I didn't have to show my legs off playing footy.
syko1979 04-08-2006, 12:45 I use telekenisis.
Jabberwocky 04-08-2006, 12:48 If you block every orifice in your body, including pores and tear ducts, then take a pinch of snuff...You could blow the hairs out.
Epilate every time! Hurts (wot am I saying??!! It KILLS!!) but definitely worth the results.
Jabberwocky - that image made me laugh out loud!! Had to explain to my colleagues what I was laughing about! :hihi:
I tried "sugaring" which is supposed to be a lot less painful than waxing on my legs and oh my god did that hurt!!!
I just shave it off! bleach and pluck my face tho
Sympathy Please
NEVER NEVER NEVER AGAIN!!!
A friend of mine offered to shave my head as im as grey as father christmas and shave my head so im bold....
she's training to be a beautician/manacurist etc:
she asked if she could wax my head... or what ever it is you use.... she had used a shaver b4 and there was very little or no hair anyway.... as she said "to make your head smooth".... she put the stuff on my head then ripped it off....AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!! wtf??? God did i scream
sod being man or a mouse..... you lot are sick sick sick:gag:
she thought it was vert funny, she was wetting herself.....
i was.... left feeling like a great big red Beetroot !!!
why do you do it??
still makes me eyes water thinking about it...:hihi: ouch...
you ladies have my sympathy.....
:hihi:
merlin_7799 04-08-2006, 14:08 I shave my legs and underarms - hair removal cream for the rest!
I have been known to go at myself with a pair of tweezers but to be honest it gets REALLY painful when you reach really delicate areas!
A wasted £50? depends on your daughters pain threshold!!
Jabberwocky 04-08-2006, 14:13 So. These top lip problems that some women have. Its pretty well proven now that shaving doesnt make the hair grow back thicker so why not shave it? Its only light hair anyway.
Actually I think its sexy, especially in redheads.
discodown 04-08-2006, 18:47 please keep it nice and trim. i hate it afterwards when i'm like a cat coughing up furballs! ;)

Too much info lol.
honeybee 05-08-2006, 13:06 I bought an epilator a month back and have used it just the once. It does hurt like hell but does a fairly good job although it didnt last as long as I would have liked. Think I might down a bottle of wine before I use it again to ease the pain :hihi:
