View Full Version : Pulp: No Sleep Till Sheffield On BBC4
In 1995, the BBC followed Jarvis Cocker and Pulp as they charmed their way around Britain, having finally become popular after many years of trying. Part of BBC FOUR's Britpop Night.
Tuesday 16th 11.10pm might be worth watching
Do you know, I can remember a time when people laughed openly at Jarvis and his musical friends, and for the wrong reasons too. They were considered by many, back in the Sheffield music 'scene' of the early to mid 80s to be a bit of a joke. Few thought that they would get much further than supporting bands at venues like The Hallamshire on West Street. This was at the time when long rain coats, drummerless trios, 'industrial funk' and angst were fashionable. A time when the Washington, Kites Wine Bar and The Leadmill were probably the hippest places for musicians to socialise.
Nice to see, years later, how the detractors look like the greater fools.
pete_fcs 15-08-2005, 21:42 ...and then the drummer BUYS the washington!
in fact they could probably scan their lyrics, looking for locations in sheffield to snap up:)
If Jarvis is such a working class hero and chronicler of odinary life how come:
He lived in the biggest house in Intake, with a walled garden and doric columns?
He's called Jarvis and his sister Saskia?
He's a misanthrope living in Paris?
EdnaKrabappe 17-08-2005, 11:46 Nice to be acknowledged that Sheffield did not stop making music after the Human League though! Although I had to laugh at the stereotypical images of each place shown - I am surprised they did not play the Corrie theme tune over the images of Manchester.
Great programme that made me feel old! Where have the last ten years gone?!!!!
sugarnspice 17-08-2005, 11:57 I really enjoyed the Britpop telly night. Brought back many a memory.

My dear fellow, I din't see the programme, but did some crazed idiot actually say that Jarvis Cocker was a "working class hero"??
What a way to miss the point of the man! His character is clearly the arty, gauche, foppish, alienated, middle-class geek who takes a perverse delight in observing the sordidness and drudgery of a world that he feels doesn't appreciate him... a beacon to poetry-reading nerds and misfits everywhere.
discuss
Jarvis has protrayed his background as poor (so in most peoples minds not middle class) many times in interviews and lyrics e.g. "Raised on a diet of broken biscuits...", "I used to work on the fishmarket", "We couldn't afford a school uniform so I had to go to school in Lederhosen"
Maybe the Cockers were poor - but nontheless the only way you could see over into Cocker Mansions was from the top deck of the 95.
I didn't see the programme, but I think I was at the gig that was featured on it - City Hall circa 95. A group called "Minty" (That's nice) were supporting. Anyone else go?
I did!! Minty were absolutely appalling! That's Nice was about the only song that was bearable. :o
Didn't the lead singer dress up like Leigh Bowery? Sadly, that minor excitement couldn't save them from being crap.

Errrr, the singer WAS Leigh Bowery!
You're right though, they were dreadful.

No it wasn't the lead singer was Matthew Glamorre. Besides Leigh Bowery died 1994.
Matthew Glamorre! What else did he do? I seem to remember him being absolutely everywhere that summer. Maybe another band... I'm seeing mililary jackets and lipgloss??

My bad. Leigh Bowery WAS in Minty at some point wasn't he though?
[Quick Google...] http://www.leighbowery.com.br/xtravaganza/default.asp?id=9&mnu=9 ah now it's clear.
I saw some ex-members of Minty supporting Black Box Recorder in Manchester a few years ago and thought they were quite good then. Can't remember what they were actually called though.
Speedy work Fantomas! ... any such joy on my military-jacketed pop duo?
According to the wesbite from Fantomas he was also involved with a group called The Offset, although it doesn't ring any bells with me.
Nah, me neither. Must have been another one of those imaginary bands that should have been formed, but weren't! :D
Anyone else see Leigh Bowery 'dance' with the Michael Clark company at the Crucible around 1992? He was dressed as a... erm... well, you know... a woman's... you know.
If only I had seen Bowery dressed as a "ladypart"!!! Michael Clark's stuff he did with The Fall was weird enough, but to have Bowery in there as well... my mind is boggling! :o
