I run a rock night at the White Bear in Ecclesfield on Fridays and at the Moorfoot Tavern on Saturday nights. It's mostly classic rock that I play and I do requests, so cover most spectrums of the rock scence. The beer is cheap in the Moorfoot Tavern too!

Hey what happened to CHA-CHA's on saturday night? Been away from Sheff for a few weeks and everything seems to have changed yet again.......

The Nelson is great and works really well but a tad small: The Sportsman is going quickly downhill FAST since it changed landlords, the Dove and Rainbow is fine but not really a rock venue as such as it is more alternative and punk based

Yes there is, I've been doing a rock night at the Moorfoot for the last few weeks on Saturdays and it's building up all the time. Great atmosphere. Cheap corp tickets. Cheap beer. Cha Chas didn't like the bikers coming in so knocked it on the head. Also supposedly refitting out the bar to attract the trendies instead.

I've been trying to get another venue but the costs in town are laughable. One bar was available but when I told them what I had planned for it they quickly told me that this was not appropriate and cut off communication with me! Poor old rock music. It gets such a hard time. Still I'm still there, filling up other people's boozers for them. Rumour has it that the Casbah want me to DJ for them soon for a couple of nights a week. Will update my thread on my whereabouts as and when there are further changes.

Tell me about it!!! Must check out the Moorfoot Tav.....its been a good few years since I sunk a pint in there!!! Not too far from the Nelson either. Tell me Buffy do they have any real ale on down there, as Cha'cha's at least did some superb brain destroying real cider!!!!

You know whats its like getting classic rock people to go out these days? Its a real struggle.....babysitters.....too old and knackered....cant be bothered....watching Big brother videos......saving myself for a week on Friday...no money as its not payday for another 6 years, etc

ARGHHHHHHHHH.

Totally out of touch with the bottom of the Moor......its an area almost forgotten about by half the population.....which means no annoying trendies I guess which is a GOOD thing!

I may have to re-activate my old dream of establishing a new rock-bar/club in Sheffield.....its just finding the time to do it because it would swallow so much of it.....the market is crying out for more rock/alt pubs/club-nights.....yes, time to put some feelers out again......renewed vigour and all that.:heyhey: :heyhey:

The Moorfoot is definitely closer than The White Bear or Horse and Jockey so I may amble down one evening. The main problem I find nowadays is so many of the rockers my age are now married with two kids and a civilised social life [bottle of wine with tennis club pals] so they wont frequent rock venues. I suspect it makes them feel old and past it but I still enjoy a rock environment as long as it's not impossibly loud, that's not an age thing it's just my personal preference and always has been. So although I know the Moorfoot is a fairly large pub how would people describe the noise level?

Classic Rock
15-08-2005, 14:55
I control the noise level at the Moorfoot on Saturdays. It's loud as rock ought to be, but not unbearable. You can still talk and be heard.

As for age. As a thirty something myself, I've noticed on the Buffy Roadshow that most of the crowd tend to be thirty something plus. Worry not

goldenfleece
15-08-2005, 16:42
I will be there myself. As for the noise levels, if it approaches MOTORHEAD at Sheffield City Hall around 1981 it will be EXCELLANT (and boy that was LOUD!!!!)

First night out at the Moorfoot last Saturday with my mate little Jackie and I must admit I was well impressed. Great music/DJ, Plenty of cheap beer on the flow and the location was spot on..
A lot better then Cha Cha’s which I thought was way too big and badly positioned.
Needless to say I’ll be there again next weekend, rockin’ my ass off, bye bye Nelson’s

of course I'm part of the younger metal heads society at 20, but I love my chunky riffs and screaming solo's as much as the next (wo)man... back in Sheffield for the weekend so got to go out with my mate for a few drinks and then probably off to Corp and catch some more classics in there and maybe a bit of hardcore/noisecore upstairs if I'm in the mood... thats providing they aint changed the music to pop punk in the last month I've been away :?

Not scary at all inside, I assure you. There were a couple of chavs stood outside when we went in last night, you know, basehall caps on sideways, inane backward grimace and stupid tracksuits uttering "ug" noises, but inside, plenty of leather and denim makes you feel right at home!!!

Will def give it a try then. Prob before the Corp next time I go. There are some unsavoury characters around there during the day, but maybe the denim and leather scared them off eh ? ;) heheh

I've never had a problem with chavs while I've been DJing there, I think the music does put them off. The regulars all love the rock and even end up dancing to it (especially around the pool table)! The place rocks!

Rock/metal nights in Sheffield are generally bad in my humble opinion.

They tend to be either cheesy and cliched, or full of children and playing really cringeworthy American rawk (Blink 182, Nickelback <insert countless other names> etc) like at Corporation.

I did have a few good sessions at CRB and Grapes though...

CLASSIC ROCK RULES........but we need a MUCH bigger scene here.....

In the USA they really know how to run the classic rock scene in a BIG way.....virtually every major town has a classic rock radio station, bar and rock club.......spent a lot of time out there some years ago and never ran out of rock bars or clubs.........

here....SIGH.......not so lucky......cheesey wine bars and CRAP bland pubs with no soul.....

Regrettably there is so little choice in Sheffield for rock music (AT THE MOMENT), you are not alone in wanting a decent place to go...currently Manchester and Leeds kick the pants off of Sheffields rock night life.....once you try those you wont want to look back.....

Or try venturing over to HULL or down to LINCOLN,also superb rock night life at the weekends.......Sheffield rock night scene sucks at present...

Hopefully after November some decent rock bars/clubs will spring up...(without a doubt) ...anything that opens even to 12.30 is a BIG improvement on what we now have....

Unfortunately this town is far TOO obsessed with trendy dance clubs and bars.......more so than any other city I have noticed (in proportion to the number of alternative and rock bars/clubs/nights anyway....what we need is more risque entrepreneurial spirit here, which Sheffield is somewhat lacking at the moment.

The Main problem I have is that Sheffield (with the Dove And Rainbow asides) only seems to really cater for "classic" rock. You have the little hardcore room in Corp with the youth club and that is it. It seems the Nelson, Corp, Sportsman etc etc only want to play older rock with the odd SoTD and Greenday song thrown in.

Classic rock may as well be called cheesy rock. It seems to be the equivilent to the Leadmill on Saturday night is to Indie music
:gag:

others cities have more progresive rock venues. I used to love going to Spiders in Hull. :)

Only place you'll get the heavier stuff is when corp opens at 9.30pm on a saturday. They usually play this for about first 30-45 minutes and then hit Slayer and its usually music the majority have heard of like Pantera, Machine Head, Soulfly...the list goes on!

Unless anyone knows anything else???

Generally though i enjoy corp, though a lot of people slag the place off  check out www.corporation.org.uk for full details of the nights.

I presume they meant longest running DJ in terms of how long he's been playing - Ken used to DJ at the Wap when I started going in 1985 - and even then he'd been there for ever!

I can still hear this voice to this day when I remember Saturday nights in the Wap circa 1980's, "time at the bar now, if you're going to Rebels, dont get too drunk" ( sure he used to DJ 6 nights a week in the Wapentake???)

And on another note, my HEAD HURTS!!! Over did the Pheasant Plucker cider last night in the Nelson.....oooh, far too many.....

Wouldn't say the rock scene's bad in Sheffield, reckon there's something to do rock-wise every day of the week just about. Anyway, we've got a whole new load of nights starting at the Casbah, and we'll be having a new floor put in upstairs in a couple of weeks... any old complaints can please be put aside as a whole new managment/promotions team has been moving in and we're gonna bring you a real good rock bar/club!

New nights @ Casbah from 26th September, 8-2:

Monday's: 'JagerJam'- Open jam night where we get some real good funky rocking musicians in from 8 and follow them with some rock DJ-ing... free entry

Tuesday's: 'Mullet Rock'- Classic Rock from 8 til 2 with DJ Splodge from the old CRB... free entry

Wednesday's: 'Rocker's Ball'- Sheffield's biggest new student rock night, 2 floors of punk/indie/emo/metal/rocknroll and any other tunes to make you rock til you drop... free NUS/£1 entry

Thursday's: 'Stranger Than Fiction'- Live bands followed by Ian The Dee-Jay's rocknroll disco! Free NUS/£1 entry

Friday's: Mark spins a danceworthy singalong selection of indie, rocknroll, punk and some well known but cool pop tunes thrown in, while downstairs Buffy spins the finest in Classic Rock! £3 10-11, £4after 11

Saturday's: Mark spins similar stuff upstairs and Ryder spins a cool selection of rocking beasts in the club! £3 10-11, £4 after 11

All midweek we've got £1.90 Carling Pints, £1.50 Grolsch bottles (or 4 for £5), £1.50 Vodka/Mixer, £1 Jagermeister (except Thursday), plus on Wednesday's it's 90p sgl or £1.50 dbl Vodka/Mixer, £1.60 pints Carling/Strongbow/Snakebite and £1.30 Grolsch (or 4 for £5)...

So come on, it aint all that bad! Don't think Shef needs more rock nights, just plenty of people turning up to the nights that are going at the moment!

Hang on, I've started DJing at the Casbah, Splodge_CRB does Tues nights. If the music isn't to your taste, do you wanna tell me why? What do you want to hear, I'll play your requests.

I also DJ down at the Moorfoot Tavern on Saturdays and do requests there.

What would you really like to see from the rock pubs and clubs. Stating 'cheap and decent' is a bit vague.

Pauline - Shez does a rock night at the Tap and Barrel on Sundays, she's only just got it going so could do with some support

Well, everything always seems better in the old days doesn't it? But with the Casbah starting all its new rock nights and new rock bars like the Nelson, plus of course the various other pub rock nights springing up like Moorfoot Tav, etc, its beginning to liven up a bit. But things will never be the same of course... its just not possible...

If anyone out there is into the more stoner end of rock (kyuss, queens, isis etc...) we at ninehertz.co.uk have a great gig this saturday 1st Oct at DnR Live (fka under the boardwalk):

Dirty Blood - Fantastic female fronted Sheffield rock 'n' roll band - like a cross between Lynyrd Skynyrd and Queens of the Stone Age.

Outburst - Big stoner rock grooves from Leicester, in an Orange Goblin or Alabama Thunderpussy vein, with a hint of Anthrax style metal.

Mothertrucker - Instrumental Black Sabbath riff worship from Birmingham, with post-rock passages reminiscent of Mogwai.

Grifter - Rough stoner rock from Plymouth that brings to mind the likes of Scissorfight or Clutch.

it's a mere £4 & doors at at 7.30pm.

for more stoner/doom/whatever related stuff, including a review of the Dirty Blood demo, checkout ninehertz.co.uk

Ive been in the Dove and the Sportsman in the daytime and not really enjoyed it. Any other ideas for lunchtime?

There's definitely a gap in the market, because if I go in somewhere of an afternoon and the music is decent, I will stay all afternoon and get bladdered. The last pub I did this in was in Brighton about 2 years ago, went for a quick lunchtime drink, and a surprisingly young barman put on The Doors, then Led Zepplin, and well I couldnt really leave could I?

I have just received a phone call from Shez saying that the landlady of the tap & barrel has rung her and that the Sunday rock night is CANCELLED as of today !

Shez got this call 10 minutes before she was due to leave her house to go to the pub.

So, for anyone thats going there tonight expecting a rock disco - dont, cos it aint happening

We now need to find somewhere else on a Sunday for our much needed fix of decent music.

I read this full thread:o

I am not from Sheffield but have lived here for nearly three years one of the draws was the rock music. I love it. The Nelson is cool, I never realized on the way there I was passing another place to rock (Moorfoot Tavern).
I will check it out, closest rock bar to me was classic rock until it closed down, that was sad I always got absolutely ****faced in there.
Are there any other rock nightclubs in Sheffield apart from Corporation?

Dj_Shadowman
20-11-2005, 18:43
Think the nearest one would be the Casbah (old wap)

Since the demise of the old CRB, whos owner just wanted to make a fast buck, the rock scene in Sheffield has gone to hell in a handbasket !

As you already know from this thread, there a a few pubs which do rock nights but we NEED another venue along the lines of CRB.

In fact, it has been suggested to me today that Shez, Buffy & myself join forces and get the stonehouse !

If I remember correctly, another forum member was also looking for a pub to turn into a rock bar.

May be an idea to see what all of the above people think on the subject.

Stranger things have happened :D

I think it is a tempting suggestion....however, it could be a case of too many people with too many varied ideas at this early stage if you are suggesting an open discussion about a new bar/venue. The first and primary consideration is to secure a suitable venue, which is nightmarishly difficult in Sheffield as everyone is aware. The cost and realization of the venue is the single prime factor, because it pre-determines in many ways the direction and budget of all the subsequent possible solutions.

If you are however, just suggesting a pub crawl......lets do it....

And for those of you who have NOT checked out WESTWAY on Tuesday/Wednesday nights, go on...give it a try....

Tuesday nights - Buffy's Rock Music Quiz Show - win a gallon of ale.

Friday nights - Splodge's rock disco (3 Fridays per month, 1st Friday of each month she's at the Horse and Jockey, Wadsley Lane doing a rock show)

-------------------

I'm still doing the White Bear in Ecclesfield on Friday nights and the Moorfoot Tavern on Saturdays.

Splodge is still doing the Royal Oak in Deepcar on Saturday nights.

Tried out the White Bear a few weeks ago.....was'nt too impressed. Don't get me wrong the staff were great, especially the nutty landlord :hihi: . But me and the girlfriend felt a little outta place being the only dressed up rocker's (customers) there. Maybe we just went out on a bad night, who knows, we'll just have to try again the next friday i have off work.

Was a good night out last Saturday night at the Moorfoot Tavern but we missed you Buffy. Hope to see you next week unless your having another weekend off.
