View Full Version : Kung Fu in Sheffield
tombodojoj 22-12-2003, 00:16 hey guys and gals
does anybody have the remotest idea if there is a class in yorkshire?
i have managed to find only one in london, i do not wish to find SAN SHOU or any of the shaolin arts, just purely san soo, the old chinese warfare system.
thanks for any help
what type of martial art is it? Never heard of it, educate me on it please.
tombodojoj 06-01-2004, 22:04 well from what i can gather, it is an old old form of chinese fighting where the student uses a low centre of gravity and all of thier body to attack, (much like the style i am currently studying) legend has it that when japan invaded china, they challenged the chinese san soo master to do battle, of course the karate champion was soundly beaten and the san soo master and the students were all slaughtered because of it,
this is just one story i have managed to find, i was hoping the class would be able to enlighten me,
i know the system itself is based on five familys, such as the family of power, the family of power points, the family of strikes and locks and so on.
i'm trying to find a decent kung fu class really too
used to study Lao Chi (Flowing spirit) kung fu
it incorporated northern and southern shaolin styles of monkey, tiger, dragon, snake and crane.
anyone know of anything similar being taught here in sheffield?
Much appreciated
chris
tombodojoj 07-01-2004, 13:27 yes, there are a few, there is shaolin kung fu next to the crucible, wing chun all over the place, lou gar on scotts road which deals with the five animals of shaolin,
this is why i wish to study san soo, from what i can gather its based on warfare and chinese combat by people and isnt based on animals, and because im a human that is good for me, lol :)
yes but i believe the animal forms are quite effective dont you? becuase of the agility and skill required... and developed
tombodojoj 07-01-2004, 16:20 yes i do, i think they have there place, i was no way intending it as an insult to those of you who do the animal styles.like i have said before i am a huge fan of wing chun and that is based on crane and snake.
i just wanted to see something pre shaolin, pre animals, just the raw survival side of the chinese masters.
tombodojoj 09-01-2004, 10:51 does anybody have any idea about these 2 in sheffield?
Bodhidharma Yijinjing kung fu?
and
shaolin tong zi gong kung fu?
i understand that yijinjing is part of qigong, is this right?
any help would be great, thankyou.
adamlycett 09-01-2004, 18:25 Bodhidharma was an Enlightened Buddhist Master who revived Buddhism in China and
taught the Monks at the Shaolin Temple one of the very first types of martial arts
tombodojoj 09-01-2004, 22:25 i know that, the yinyin (i cant remember how to spell it, lol) is a group of isometrics to strenghthen tendons????lol, see i really need help on this one
Has anyone tried this?
I'm starting it tonight in Pitsmoor, and a class on Saturday in Hillsborough. (also kick-boxing on Sundays).
Looks really good but experiences/opinions/information would be cool :)
This is the site: www.prokungfu.com

tombodojoj 03-02-2004, 17:07 hey
i have been there, sifi graham abdulla, (guardian of lau gar kung fu) he is a fantastic teacher, and would be a great mentor to have, i couldnt get on with standing around doing forms though and i think a few of the students have not an ego problem but...... i hope you know what i mean, but please dont let that put you off it is only what i have found, the kick boxing on a sunday is ok as someone i know goes everyweek to that and the wed class,
enjoy yourself it is a good all round style :)
Yeah I've got the Graham dude tonight! I'll be going on Thursday, Saturday and then Kickboxing on Sunday :D
Well that went out of the window. Couldn't find the place!
I'll have to ring up tomorrow and get directions ready for Thursday.
tombodojoj 03-02-2004, 21:29 sorry to hear that man, ask adrian abdulla on sunday (he runs the kick boxing) catch the 22 from town(outside t j hughes), ask the driver to tell you when your at scotts road and i think its the third stop up, walk up the street and theres a church just over the hill, its there
I live not far away and used to live just 2 minutes away from Pitsmoor, but I've never heard of St.James' church! I found 2- St.Catherines, and Pitsmoor Christ Church. Neither had lights on so it couldn't have been them!
I'll give Adrian a call in a bit.
I used to study Lao Chi Kung Fu (Flowing Spirit) in Birkenhead, but stopped a few years ago.
I'd like to start up a decent form of kung fu again soon. any suggestions?
I did find that it was about forms a lot which i know is important. to be honest i'd liek to get to grips with kicks, punches and hand movements (grips, holds, defensive hand movements etc..)
i dont know where to look. (preferably i'd like to train in the week at night time)

Dave
moongarden 18-01-2005, 23:15 i would be interested to find out how you got on Gaz.
Can anyone offer me some advice on the same subject? i'd like to start training in some form of kung fu but there are so many styles to try and make a decision between.
Having read this: http://www.ukkungfu.co.uk/styles.html it says somewhere below the map that some styles are preferable for women. i'm 5' 5" and not very fit at the minute.
any suggestions as to which style to look at?
my only previous training has been in karate when i was 12-14 so nearly 20 years ago!
Davemantis 19-01-2005, 09:03 Hi moongarden
The best thing to do is find out why you want to do kung fu, is it for the spiritual side, self-defence, fitness, competitions, forms (kata), the weapons, Kicking, or some other reason???
Do you have any thing that might stop you from training???
Do you want to travail???? I Have to go to Leicester for my training.
The biggest problem with Kung Fu is that there are a lot of bad schools about i.e. people that have only been training for 2 or 3 of years and then start calling themselves Master (you are best off keeping away for them places) have a look around at different schools before you decide on what style you would like to do as they all have something to offer.
Wing Chun
Is a good one to look at its simple but direct. I only know of 2 good schools in Sheffield & they are miles apart.
Tai Chi
Is another good one but there are a lot of people teaching it that don’t have a clue. I would check whether they do the practical side of it as well as the health side. I know of a couple of good schools.
JKD
Is an excellent style if you want self defence also it covers all the fighting ranges there is a good school in Sheffield but I haven’t met the instructor yet but that will have to change soon I hope.
Lau Gar
Is an excellent style if you want to do competitions but that not all they do? I have heard some good things about them.
7 Star Praying Mantis
There is only 1 club in the Sheffield area that teaches that but at the moment it’s only in Dinnington. I do hope to change that mind when I can find a place. If you want more info on that then e-mail me
If you need any help feel free to e-mail me

my only previous training has been in karate when i was 12-14 so nearly 20 years ago! They do Lau Gar Kung Fu at 393 club (old boys brigade club) back of Morrisons. Thats run by Graham and Adrian Abdulla they're brill. My son goes there and he loves it they also do kick boxing, quite a few women do that. It doesnt matter bout your level of fitness now its a great way to get fit!!
moongarden 19-01-2005, 10:03 Davemantis - i have PM'd you.
thanks Gazelle for your comments too.
shaolinnick 21-01-2005, 11:39 i am currently studying a year long course in northern china, learning martial arts from the shaolin monks, i learn shaolin kung fu (forms, weapons, acrobatics etc), sanda boxing or shan shou, chi kung, tai chi chuan (yang and chen), xing yi plum stakes (jin and also fist forms) and qin na (locks, throws and takedowns).
i am coming back to uk to study at sheffield hallam and i have been scouring the net for any good looking clubs that teach chinese kung fu to a high level, preferably shaolin, but if not any other kung fu clubs. Please someone get back soon as because im going crazy!!
Thanks everyone,
nick
Davemantis 21-01-2005, 14:57 Hi nick
Welcome to Sheffield well when you get hear that is.
How long did you studied in China for??? And with who???
If you type in Kung Fu Sheffield you will come across some interesting clubs some legitimate some not some that picked it up over 2 or 3 years and call themselves Master. If you are looking for Wushu you will have to go to Nottingham but there is talk about a club in Doncaster but I don’t know if it is the real deal or not I haven’t been. But if you are looking for traditional Kung Fu there is 7 star praying mantis, www.moifa.20m.com, Tai chi, There are some traditional Tai Chi people out there & a couple of good Wing Chun people. Then there is JKD but that’s not strictly traditional but good. But with every thing there is good and bad.
Not a lot of us kung fu people in Sheffield every body seems to do TKD
If you need any help e-mail me

shaolinnick 23-01-2005, 10:02 hey thanks you two thats put me at ease a bit more. Dave that website link you gave me doesnt seem to work, not sure if it is just my computer, these chinese computers seem to block everything from UK. Hey funky do you think you could give me the website URL of the Shaolin long fist, it sounds really good.
Cheers, Nick
shaolinnick 23-01-2005, 10:25 I emailed Mr abdulla at least a month back now for some more information about what they teach and have no reply. Just wondering if anyone who has been there can tell me if there is a Shaolin element involved in Lau Gar??
Also on the website it says about the five animals, i was wondering if they would teach any others, as i know Monkey, Tiger and Eagle. If anyone knows, give me a shout,
Thanks

shefflass 26-01-2005, 17:46 hi funky, can u tell me a little more about the Shoalin Long Fist class please. me and my children are wanting to take up some sort of kung fu, but there are that many, i dont know where to start! lol thanks, Sheff
Davemantis 14-02-2005, 14:58 Hi snatchbane
I do 7 Star Praying Mantis but that’s in Dinnington just of junction 31 on the M1 & in Doncaster next to the Airport.
Not many people are qualified to teach Gow Gar Mantis in the Uk. So it would be interesting if someone come forward. Most to the clubs are in London.
Why Cow Gar???? It’s no different from any other Martial Art.
I know of six people that have trained with the sheffield academy of martial arts in hillsborough. I beleive they have several clubs in sheffield but my friends go to the kung fu class on a saurday and the kickboxing on sunday. The kung fu style is Lau Gar, one of the original five (apparently) and both Graham and Adrain are fantastic instructors. Check out the website prokungfu.com. I know they have a special childrens programme (one of my friends has a daughter who trains) and i don't think you'll be disappointed.
Freddylee 24-02-2005, 22:17 lau gar kung fu?
hmmm ive heard that graham abdulla was a good semi contact torunament figther in his day , but as far as lau gar having a shaolin influence, a tad perhaps
Sorry to burst anyones bubble but Jeremy Yau and Mike Haig invented Lau Gar in birimingham in the 1970's.
they claim to eb a southern shaolin style but when they spar , they spar a lot like sport karate.
If you dont care about wether or not your doing a "genuine " system, then i guess it can be a good laugh and ok to keep fit anyhow
Hi Shaolinnick,
Have u back to Sheffield or you are still in China now?
Davemantis 11-03-2005, 14:18 Hi Freddylee
you say >Sorry to burst anyones bubble but Jeremy Yau and Mike Haig invented Lau Gar in birimingham in the 1970's.
they claim to eb a southern shaolin style but when they spar, they spar a lot like sport karate.
Sorry to burst your bubble but I think you will find Lau Gar is a Traditional southern Art that was fading out not just in the UK but also in China that is why a lot of other Southern styles i.e. Hung Gar, & Choy Lee Fut to name just a couple adopted some of there forms to keep the system alive and that Jeremy Yau introduced the semi contact sparring into his curriculum as a way of allowing his student to compete safely. Some of his student did make a name for them sefes in the full contact ring fighting Kick boxers, Tai boxers the same as some fighters that did TKD and Karate made names for them selves. How would you classify Don the Dragon??? Benny The Jet??? Bill Supperfut??? Jo Lewis??? To name just 1 or 2 ????????
Freddylee 12-03-2005, 14:47 Davemantis
joe lewis, bill wallace , don wilson
youre trying to say they are lau gar???
also which lau gar people are fighting proper kickboxing in the ring now?
enlighten me of your vast sea of knowledge of kickboxing.
Davemantis 12-03-2005, 16:49 I did not say I had a vast sea of knowledge of kickboxing.
Joe Lewis, bill Wallace, don Wilson
>you’re trying to say they are lau gar???
No im not trying to say they are lau gar I was asking would you class them as Kick boxers?????
>Also which lau gar people are fighting proper kickboxing in the ring now?
As for now I don’t know, as I don’t follow kickboxing or any other martial sport any more as there seems to be that many different federations and titles. But there has been in the past some good people that broke away from Lau Gar and started Kickboxing of freestyle Schools both in the UK and USA.
Lau gar may have a TMA lineage but having fought many of them in my freestyle karate comp days, I thought their style develops excellent semi-contact tournamanent fighters (i.e Spider Harris, pele reid etc). I admired how they could switch to continuous too. I recently watched a class and was surprised to see they maintained their trad approach, forms and stylised movements for even standing armlocks, which I felt was OTT and mechanical (may have been an off day/ Instructor/ poor students)! Very stlylish Kung fu contradicted by their competition fluidity, where no style prevaled.

MasterKFSS 22-02-2008, 14:26 My name is Brad Sirott and I am the only Kung Fu San Soo master teaching in Europe and have two classes a week in London. A fellow San Soo teacher does teach in Germany somewhere.
Email: Brads@chambersandpartners.co.uk
Davemantis 25-02-2008, 08:24 MasterKFSS
how do you get you are the only one ??????
There’s not that muck kung fu in Sheffield
I am not the biggest Kung Fu fan, but I don`t think its that bad :hihi:
Davemantis 25-02-2008, 08:54 Depends on the kung fu instructor lol
some goog some not so good :hihi:
Protekt
have you had a go at any ?
I did Wing Chun for about a year, never really felt I could make it work for me. Muay Thai and Karate are my main styles, also enjoy traing with Mark at Sheffield Martial Arts Center.
MasterkFSS
I THINK I was taught at school that Germany was part of Europe, so that makes two people in Europe teaching,San Soo.
Davemantis 26-02-2008, 10:25 Protekt
wing chun depends on who teaches it lol
some focus on the Practical side and others on the chi sau.
Mind al arts are like that karate is the same some focus on sport some on kata some on self defence.
Davemantis 25-06-2008, 14:04 Just to let everyone know Cung Le the world sanshou / sanda / Chinese Kickboxing champion is now a world MMA champion after beating shamrock the year ;-)
Part of Cung le’s interview
Sanshou in MMA
"Sanshou is the perfect stand-up art for MMA because it has all the elements – the punching, the kicking, the wrestling. It has all the elements that you need for the stand-up game for MMA. The only missing element is the ground stuff – the jiu-jitsu and the ground and pound. I think sanshou is effective because when you throw someone, you get more points in sanshou when you stay standing. If you go down with them, you're at more of a threat to be submitted. In sanshou, you stay standing and that limits your chance of being submitted. When you take someone down in MMA, they got guillotines, they can transition to arm bars, they can roll for your leg.
"I think for me as a fighter, what I bring to the MMA cage of the ring is more exciting because I keep things going, instead of going down where there's more of a stalemate. So if I throw someone down, people get to enjoy the throw and the action doesn't stop because someone's working the guard or working trying to get position. That guy gets to get up and exchange again. Now if there's a scramble, like I had against Frank, and I'm able to scramble out of danger, that's more exciting than being in someone's guard and looking to pass his guard. There's some elements of excitement when there's ground and pound. When you get a good punch on the ground, the guy gets rocked and you get position. You're punching him and you transition into submission. But you see that a lot. What I feel you don't see a lot is you take one down with a high altitude throw, and you walk away and you let them come back. That was my game plan. I said I was going to sanshou Frank. And I did.
"Frank is one of those guys who likes to get in your head before the fight. During the weigh-ins, every chance he gets he's going to try to get in your head and that's what he tried to do to me. So basically, he got taken down, so instead of being embarrassed and getting back up, he neutralized it. People were like, ‘Ohh, look how Frank's inviting Cung in!' People almost forgot. How did he get down on the ground? It was a sanshou takedown. I caught his kick. I swept out his leg. He fell down. He invited me in and I said ‘no thank you.'
"What I feel is, there's a lot of guys that are a lot smoother and a lot more fun to watch on the ground than I am. So those are the guys that you go to watch them perform and do their stuff on the ground. Now people, they get a little different element of that when they come watch me fight. My ground game is getting better. But I feel like I'm not like a Jake Shields or someone like B. J. Penn. And I'm not trying to be like them. I'm trying to make my mark as Cung Le, the kung fu sanshou fighter, transitioning into MMA. It's who I am and it's where I came from. I'm sticking to my roots and I'm evolving with this whole sport – a new explosion of mixed martial arts."
Highlights of some of his fight are at
