I have the 1841 west yorks census on CD but no name or street index. Am trying to find Granville Street and Duke Street Sheffield but don't know which area of Sheffield these would be under. Can anyone help.

hi,jandbforbes-- i think it is most likely sheffield 2--also ive found a programme called eath.google.com and if you download it from the site it will throw up every single road and street in the world--its really good and you may find it helpful.

An excellent index to the 1841 census for Sheffield can be found here (http://www.sheff-indexers.thewholeshebang.org/1841census/) .

Granville St still exists but un-named on modern maps because it is for the track tracks only - it runs behind Sheffield Midland Railway Station.

Warning - there were 2 Duke Streets in Sheffield for much of the 19th century. As well as the one that exists today, the western end of Matilda Street used to be called Duke St. It probably was absorbed into Matilda street when the council eliminated duplicated street names in the 1870's.

Hi Jandbforbes,
Go on to this site and you will be able to search through maps and any other genealogy queries that you have.

Do not start with the www.

jf Granville St runs paralell to the back of the Midland Station and they are in the S2 post code.
