Quick few Q's for those in the know, pretty please:

(i) how/in what format does iTunes store music files on a PC?

(ii) can the iTunes music files be transferred to a [generic/non-Apple] MP3 player in Windows Explorer (showing as a mass storage device/drive)?

(iii) will a [generic] MP3 player play them as normal, or is there some form of DRM trickery and they'd need to be converted?

 (please do not discuss ban-inducing/illegal materials/techniques in relation to the DRM question, I just need yes/no answers, I'll figure the rest out).

(the [generic] player I have in mind plays MP3, WMA, FLAC, APE and WAV, btw)

(i) iTunes is generally AAC for self imported(ripped) / some purchased, or Mp3

(ii) yes depending on DRM protection, if the player will play/bypass DRM files, and if it supports AAC (if thats how they are storred)

(iii) see above

generally just try it :)

generally just try it :)generally, I would :D

But
(i) I don't have an iPod and
(ii) my Mrs, somewhat slightly inebriated, promised our best friends we'd buy their daughter a replacement iPod for the one she's just lost, in time for her forthcoming schooltrip, as a B'day present... recession? whazzat? ain't she nice :gag:

I'm just trying to figure out if I must give Steve Jobs his stipend  or if I can go with a better and cheaper alternative ;) (Archos 1, just bought 1 for the Mrs yesterday, stonking deal on them at play.com)

And it's supposed to be a surprise, so I can't go sneaking around and/or asking what formats she's got in her collection

Thx for the replies, btw.

i - if your importing from cd's you can choose to import as MP3 or WAV.
iTunes downloads will be AAC and can be converted to MP3 or WAV, I don't know if DRM is used now??
ii - yes you can, just drag and drop.
iii - should play them ok

Don't do it. Converting lossy to lossy will result in a further reduction in quality. Leave them as they are :)

Go to preferences and on the import menu select MP3 and your prefered bit rate and click ok. (this will also be good for cd imports)
In iTunes select your track/s and go to Advance and select "Create MP3 version"

as has been said lossy to lossy will be rubbish
