View Full Version : Are Rottweilers the 'new' Staffies?
This is not a slate bad dogs thread.
I have been trawling the dog rescue websites more and more often recently as I am desperate to be able to offer them a home unfortunately not practical at the moment due to living in a flat and not a house, I obviously just like to torture myself by looking :(
Anyway I have noticed there seem to be a growing number of Rottweilers who have been abandoned, has it always been this way? Am I just noticing it more now than before?
Moonbird 28-01-2010, 09:43 There are a lot, but I think that there are less now than at one time, the poor old Staffy still takes the gold award for abandonment and despair
HeadingNorth 28-01-2010, 11:12 Weren't Rottweilers the old Staffies? They were massively popular 15-20 years ago, I recall.
kate1984 28-01-2010, 12:26 i have a staffy and she is beautifull, i don't understand people that just dump staffs and hurt them, went round thornberry and saw a couple of bobby dazzlers in there, it breaks my heart.
It also makes other staffy owners look bad, im fed up of the comment "oh you have a staff" as if it's a bad thing, some people dont like them and thats there choice, tbh there are some breeds that i can't stand but these dogs just need love....
surly there is something to be done?

i rescxued a rottie last july and he is wonderful xxx
NO reason you can't have a little staffy in a flat btw. No backgarden means it has to be walked and not just turned out.
we have 4 staffies perfect pets
knighthawk 28-01-2010, 19:47 I have a Rottie and hes fantastic....its a shame the media gave them so much bad press
Rainrescue 28-01-2010, 20:08 Its true - they were dumped years ago, and continue to be so sadly.
We have ended up taking in the rottie that was found wandering at Southey green - he's been really poorly with kc and runs in kennels. A gorgeous boy just 8 - 9 months old for goodness sake.
Also, one was picked up on the Stocksbridge by-pass the other week. she's about 7 years old and has been left with an entropian (scratching ripping eyelashes ) which is very painful. She needs this operation doing to ease the pain - but who wants to take on an old girl like this? Very few people will that for sure.
We are already paying for 6 in kennels, but i can't stop thinking about her. Most rotties are lovely - and sad that they can't get nice homes.
Starlet83 28-01-2010, 20:32 They are fantastic animals, ours was sat in a make shift tent in our living room on Sunday afternoon attending a tea party with a 4 year old and a geriatric staffy. As the days go by it is becoming more and more obvious that he has been treat appallingly. But generally he is so good natured and placid. The issues he does have are caused by the treatment he has received at the hands of other people. We are gradually getting round his problems with the help of the experts. It just breaks my heart thinking about the hundreds like him who dont get the chance of loving home which respects the breed. They are very intelligent too. On a par with a 2 year old I am lead to believe.
And If the hype and bad bad press it to be believed aren't I due to be ripped to bits any moment as I am sat between a Rottie and a Staffie as I type.

Yup. And German Shepherds were the old Rotties. American Bulldogs or Mastiffs are probably going to be the new Bull Terriers. And so on.
A few attacks are reported by a specific breed and it turns into a media frenzy, where the breed gets over-exposed.
It then becomes the new 'evil' breed, 'nice' people (meaning gullible and hysterical) take against it and this in turn creates and further reinforces a 'hard' image of the breed, making it highly attractive to people who want a dog to be aggressive.
Dog attacks however, regardless of breed, are an almost entirely human caused problem. I say almost, because you can't account for freak circumstances like mental conditions. If certain breeds really were dangerous, there would be many, many times more incidents than the handfull we hear about.
sheff290 28-01-2010, 23:10 i agree with you about mastiffs i have had them a long time and have seen them ruined over the last couple of years people just jumping on the bandwagon to make a quick buck breeding unhealthy dogs and bad temperments, the thing is people buy them and then dump them the thing is with mastiffs most dont rehome very good, i can see neapolitians joining the list aswell, its very sad for people like me that are passionate about the breed and strife to produce healthy dogs.
The concept of mastiffs becoming the next 'must have' petrifies me. Rotts are at least generally docile dogs, but annoying a mastiff is a really bad idea
Swifty237 30-01-2010, 12:34 I have 2 staffies both rescued and they are the most lovable dogs iv had.
I used to have a German shepherd and a labrador x, unfortunately my beautiful German shepherd got very poorly and as my daughter says is in heaven playing with the angels lol, and my other daft dog is with my nan (she got lonely and needed a friend lol). But my labrador was a grumpy devil and we had him since a pup he was loved and never badly treated but still could snap if the kids annoyed him so you have to be careful either way, no matter what breed.
My kids play with the dogs and they are brill. It does get me so angry when you read the bad press staffies get.
My best mate hasa rottie and he is adorable, he has a thing for lolly pops though lol. But its odd how ppl cross over when she's walking him, you can tell he makes them uncomfortable and thats all down to press and media hype.
Dog's can snap, but so can humans. However we can tell someone to stop doing something if it annoys us a dog cant other then growling or snapping,
Owners need to be respobsible. I mean when you read the stories of rotties snappin they are normally left alone with a child, owned by some daft sod who was drunk etc.
I mean the latest one where the wee girl was attacked. What the hell was she doing be left outside to play with the rottie at 11.50pm. She should have been in bed. It raises eyebrows to the type of ppl that have them not just the breed.
Anyway i could go on forever sorry folks.
x
sheff290 30-01-2010, 13:20 it does me aswell but mastiffs like neapoltians in the wrong hands are much more capable of doing alot of damage than a lot of breeds the huge size weight and jaw power like my mastiff one is 80kgs thats not as big as a neo but a adult couldnt get him off them never mind a child luckliy my dog has a sweet nature and has been looked after properly and even had a baby bird in his mouth once no even put a mark on it but was covered in saliva if he had gone to brain dead people with that size and power god knows thats why i would never let a mastiff go to kids under 10 as a adult as they can be dangerous especially neos, they are only for breed experienced people not novices, its the owners not the dogs but some people get breeds without the knowledge behind the dog, i have one mastiff thats very aggressive but she will never leave here as its here or nothing she aint rehomable, but i am responsible some people arent and the breed is been ruined by backstreet breeders making a quick buck, thats why they will become more in rescue as these breeders havent got a clue about hipscores breed problems aggression and then people cant afford the vet bills and dump them or there bitch aint making them money any more and out she goes , its the novelty breeds and money making breeds that are next to flood rescue, more and more bordeaux are in rescue its sad because they are very loyal dogs and dont rehome very good they kennel guard and are mainly males that are out of control, but inresponsible breeders leave rescue to pick up the bill from there health and temperment
sheff290 30-01-2010, 13:36 what sickens me is people dont know what really happens behind closed doors even with top respected breeders, its the responsiblity in people not the status about your dogs and champions i know loads of champion dogs in many breeds that have health issues and kept in bad condtions, taking different dogs on diffrent paperwork for health screening and putting on different paperwork you would be surprised, if you bring little lifes into the world be responsible for that dog thats why microchipping of puppies are good because it gives them a trace, the industry is getting worse and will not improve with pure breeds in rescue, where will it really end
lisa1973 31-01-2010, 00:42 i have a beautiful staffi thay are brill dogs i would not have another breed had staffis all my life its not the dogs that are vicious its how you bring them up.i am sick of them people who always slagin staffies off.
