View Full Version : Manchester Road in Stocksbridge; what a mess!
The Zeppelin 14-08-2005, 00:29 Ok, who agreed to repaving the area in front of the parade on Manchester Road at Stocksbridge, and then to narrow the road by a full 1 metre. The parade is drab and delapidated, so who in their right mind will want to sit there anyway, and the road was narrow enough to start with, now its downright feckin dangerous? Somebody on Stocksbridge Town Council has agreed to spend this money. Who? IDIOT!

Not another 'anti car' move from local councillors surely?
Having been to Stocksbridge recently, I have to say that it seems ironic to be doing up the area infront of the shops...
..I mean, have you seen the shops?

Gotta agree with you there Zeppelin.
We've had to put up with this over running joke of a job for God knows how long. (I wonder if the council will be penalising "Street Pride" for totally missing their completion target? ).
Personally I have avoided, almost totally, the shops down there since work commenced. I bet I'm not the only one either.
To be fair it looks as if they're not far off finishing now and what a fantastic BOTTLE NECK they have created:clap::rolleyes::loopy:
Great idea putting a zebra crossing next to pelican crossing.
Could be that this is the town councils idea of the Stocksbrige Zoo attraction:huh:
It's gonna be great at rush hour when the usuall idiots park outside the bank/cash machine and totally block off the road:shakes::mad::rant:
Thanks to some idiot putting a sign up on the road below the barrier saying (Short term parking - to use shops) People are literally having to walk in the middle of the road some distance, to get passed the barrier , as the new path is closed to public.
mind you probably no more an idiot than the people who actually do park there.
short of fighting to cross the road and crossing back over just to pass the barrier, pedestrians can do little else.
A dice with death whatever they do.
This project was suppose to be finished in june, then august,
As quoted in the local paper, they will be there to switch our christmas lights on lol.
And as for the zebra near the pelican crossing, the zebra which is a lot further up the road than the pelican is much needed to cross this very busy road, to get to the co-op.
The Zeppelin 14-08-2005, 13:56 I'm happy I'm not alone in this thinking.
There is a row of shops which have been boarded up for months. That would be nice wouldn't it, to sit on a brand new bench surrounded by chewing gum, spit and tab ends, looking at a row of boarded up shops. I really would like to know if the Brelsford family (a nepotistic Lib Dem family dynasty curiously voted onto the council year after year) rubber-stamped this or did they let the sheep on the hills decide? When building originally started, almost everyone thought they would be building a drive-in, one-way car parking bay to relieve the pressure on the road. Now we've got a narrower than ever road and less parking but a BRAND new million pound block paved area in front of some boarded up shops.
Skatiechik 14-08-2005, 15:33 I wonder who had the idea to decrease all the parking spaces on the road? Morons!

No, no!:nono:
It now goes:
1) Zebra=Main Co-op
2)Pelican=Factory Outlet
3)Zebra(Bottle neck)=Grossly over run council expenditure
All within about 100 yards at a guess.
Never knew Stocksbridge was such the thriving shopping centre that would warrant such a stop-start, stop-start, stop-start traffic management it obviously requires :loopy:

The sheep wouldn't have been as Baaaaaa-rmy:shakes:
The drive in idea is exactly what I thought it was gonna be too, would certainly have made sense (but we're talking counsellors here after all  )
Extortionate block paving..............They've gotta warrant the town council excess :!:
couldnt agree more what a fiasco this whole episode has been.
Only today i helped a lady in a motorised wheelchair, who had got stuck in the sand (which has been left as a tempory pavement) outside Greens. The poor lady nearly toppled over in her chair thanks to the brainless council who have left the pavements in this state, it is dangerous.
The main road this morning was RIDICULOUS. Two delivery lorries, a bus at the bus stop, the new traffic calming chicane plus the usual traffic. The place was jammed. A couple of wing mirrors touched and you could feel the driver stress building up. The cloud of exhaust fumes made the place a health hazard.
What has been bothering me is that somehow or other, the people responsible for agreeing to this 'improvement' must have been given the authority to do so. Therefore they must have been considered capable, therefore displaying some sort of intelligence & experience. Accepting this then, what on earth were their reasons for deciding that this was a good idea?
Surely anyone with a genuine wish to improve the area would have seen what a stupid, white elephant the plans were. HOW will it benefit the areas prosperity?
The only conclusion I can reach is that it is a deliberate attempt at sabotage. Well done then, councillors, you've succeeded in wasting a whole ball of money that could have been used 100 times more productively not to mention making a mockery of the whole reason the by-pass was built all those years ago - to reduce the traffic chaos on Manchester Road.
DUH!!!!
With regard to the Stocksbridge precinct, why was such a design allowed to be passed, for the wishes of an anti car minority (especially in Stocksbridge).
What i cannot understand, is why they didnt demolish the Victoria Wine shop, re-locate this into the empty supermarket, and extent the landscaping onto the front of the library and old post office, linking to the Co-Op.
By creating parking bays, all along the front, would be beneficial for both users, and attract further buisness to the shops, which in turn could regenerate the shopping area. A shopping parade (with wide pavements on both sides) stretching from the Lidl to the Co OP, with more/better shops attracted to the area.
i too would like to know where my council tax is gettin spent in my local area, and who is spending it?
i think the reason the work has taken so long is because there isnt enough sundays for half a dozen work men to stand around a big hole, 3 or 4 to move the pedestrian sign around the shops and another couple to divert the traffic through whatever bit of road is intact,
i had to walk down the middle of the road on sunday with traffic waiting behind me as there wasnt anywhere for for pedestrians and the road was ridiculasly narrow.
As a pillion on a motorbike it is already a very bumpy stretch of road (all the way into sheffield) due to the amount of pit holes which need some attention, it just makes it worse when it all gets dug up.
looking forward to seeing the workmen switch on the xmas lights even if i will probably have to wait until 2006
at least the bin men are always on time at 6am
Skatiechik 16-08-2005, 13:04 I want to know where the post box has gone.
Anyone any ideas?
It's inside the co-op late. At the back by the PO counter.
Skatiechik 16-08-2005, 14:55 What a stupid idea, I don't want to be going into a shop to post a letter and especially when they put it at the back making you walk through all the aisles.
I have to go to Stocksbridge regularly and used to live there at one point.
I have always found the best way to get to where I'm going in Stocksbridge is to drive across the by pass and come back in to the town at the Underbank end, missing that stupid "shopping centre" bit out all together.
If I'm coming in from Middlewood I always go up through Bolsterstone for the same reason.
Wether this is true or not, I'm not sure but this morning I heard that the latest rumour is the "bottom road" is going to be made one way. How I'm not sure but that is the rumour.
Stocksbridge is a great place for rumours though so I'm taking this with a pinch of salt.
A bit off subject, but a long time ago after the bank behind the bus stop closed the builders who moved in to transform it into Voyager systems (what do they do?) put a sign up in the window proclaimimg that "The star of Bengal" was opening soon.
Mrs Lee at the take away across the road was doing her nut for weeks until she found out it was a wind up.
A lovely lady , Mrs Lee.
Did some work for the family once and their hospitality was fantastic!

Have you thought of standing for local government Boston?
You'd get my vote :clap::clap::clap::thumbsup:
The Zeppelin 16-08-2005, 20:56 Yes, Boston, good ideas, would also cost a fortune but would be much better value and use. The one-way thing is for the time being merely a rumour, but if the plans come off to build a new housing estate where the Corus GEW and scrapyards are now I'm sure our wonderful (still find it curious how they get voted in) elected family...er council, will ENSURE that new roads will service Stocksbridge and it's expected 4000 new inhabitants when Corus clean and decontaminate their spare land in preparation for the sale to Grimley's so they can build houses.
However, I was at the meeting when the Sheffield Council's Transport Infrastructure person blushed when asked whether any thought had gone into ie new road or rail links in and out of Stocksbridge. When she spoke she could not confirm one way or the other about a better road network. It looked like another Sheffield Council sell out to to the highest bidder, just like the one involving the Winter Garden camouflage project, the gigantic new office block which now looks like being the 2nd highest structure in Sheff after the University library tower.

I think the traders in Stocksbridge should get a years free rates!
metalman 27-08-2005, 18:05 At least when I go into Stocksbridge I only go as far as Lidl so I should hopefully continue to avoid all this mess. One day I might even pluck up the courage to go to the Parson Cross Lidl with its load of chavvy kids and druggies hanging about in the car park to intimidate you, and then I wouldn't need to go to Stocksbridge at all.
