My Mum is soon going into sheltered housing and so is giving up her council house, I rang today and was told that they only require one weeks notice to quit but I was sure that it should be 4 weeks.
She is not going into another council property it is housing association (not sure if that makes any difference) please advise if you have any experience with this situation as I am a bit worried about it.

It's normally 4 weeks, but I'm sure she can claim an overlap on the Housing benefit (If she gets it?) for the two properties, as she's responsible for both rents during the interim.
Tell her to get advice to double check.

In the 'You and Your Home' booklet, issued by Sheffield Homes, on page 9 it states:
Ending your tenancy
If you want to end your
tenancy you must give us four
weeks written notice. The four
weeks notice must end on a
Monday.
You can download the booklet here: http://www.sheffieldhomes.org.uk/myLandlord/Publications/Leaflets/TenancyConditions.aspx
I hope your mum likes her new home!

Thank you I think it will be hard for a while but will be worth it once she settles, she is really proud that it is a brand new flat and she will be the first tenant :)

brand spanking new? oh wow, that's lovely.
Some years ago I was the first tenant in a new build, and it was really nice.
