My Ipod has died and I have tried to take it to Trimac to have it repaired or replaced but they don't exsist anymore. Anybody got any ideas where i send it to in Sheffield otherwise it's just a paperweight.

Well, maybe the next media player you buy won't be an iPod and you might keep it for a while longer.
Think better brands ;) i-Iriver

It was a gift, I would have gone for something different.

Since you mentioned having it replaced, is it under warranty? Give Apple UK customer service a call, they have a reputation for being pretty helpful...

Whatever people say to you.. you have the worlds finest mp3 player in your hands.. dont go along with the iRiver or the creative and certainly dont touch the Archos models.

I'm an Ipod owner myself.. be proud to be one.

Better brands???

Ipod is the best by far boys and girls.. it looks and sounds the best- and you dont see creative and iriver in the news and on ads now do you?

Apple rules!!! I think there is a shop on West Street called MacSolutions, it is advertised in MAC World. They may be able to help you out.

Have you tried the software restore? (you will loose your music) the little booklet that came with your pod explains how.

I have an iRiver Hp140 so I'm biased but I love it. It's never given me any problems and IMHO, it's far better than the iPod, which I have also had experience of.

PROS of iRiver:

* Cheaper
* Better battery life (16 hours on mine, remind me what it is on the iPod.)
* Clearer sound. My music sounds much better through the iRiver than it does on the iPod. I know, I tested.

CONS of iRiver:

* Their firmware upgrades are few and far between but it hasn't affected my use of my 140.
* Compared so the iPod, it is quite bulky.

Depends what you want, style or substance :)

And a note on the "news and advertising". Money talks, and Apple have an awful lot of money :)

Yes, it is great - I have a fourth generation 20Gb, which is virtually full; however, I am on my third one.

I got it at christmas - packed up after a week - the "Apple" logo just sat there.

iPod 2 - Xmas - February, after a reformat, it [obviously] recognised all of the music (which had and is always on drive 'D') as new music. Unfortuantely, I had to send it back, and get a new one.

iPod 3 - works well.

you dont see creative and iriver in the news and on ads now do you? They don't advertise as their products get sold by word of mouth due to the quality.

i-Pod sells a ridiculously shameful player which can only sold by broadcasting annoying U2 adverts. Nuf said me thinks...
Plus think a bit, what's best ? A Hard Drive driven player or a flash memory one ?
I'd go for one that has less moving parts and that can be (accidently) dropped on the floor without fear of one of the i-Pot's Hard Drive pins to go loose of rip the disks...

Hmm, rubbish mp3 player, annoying adverts, 80+% market share, they really don't know what they are doing eh ;) I think ipods are great, I also think some other brands of mp3 players are great - although there's no way I'd choose one with flash storage.

Having said that, he didn't ask what to buy, he asked how to fix his ipod... :)

Ipods sell best because they look better than owt out there at the minute, plus.. the music quality is fantastic, the battery life is great (dont listen the lies about the battery packing up after 6 months- its a load of old cock!), and they are just a better player than anything else.

I have dropped mine on the floor dozens of times, nothing damaged and its still working perfectly.. and I would never in a fiery pit of hell- go for a flash memory one!!

You cant compare a flash driven one with a say 20gb HD memory, you just cant- the HD will win every time, especially if you keep it nice and defragged all the time.

I agree, what use is flash memory anyway if you're wanting to keep 20bg+ of music on there.

iPod all the way.

You don't say what the problem actually is, there's a good chance it can be fixed quite easily.

Let me know and i'll see if i can advise.

I've tried a full re install and all the other stuff it says on the apple website but ;nothing has worked. There is a strange clicking sound coming from it?.

i'd cry if i lost all my ipod, i dont go anywhere without it. I dont see why ppl say how rubbish they are as i find it a great gadget, and i'v tried lots of mp3 players. There must be a reason it sells so well, and it not that it looks nice (creative zen micro's look so much nicer and glowy)

Don't worry, people just like to feel superior, so they'll tell you that you made the wrong choice despite you being very happy with it :) Personally I've had different brands of mp3 players, was well aware of all the options mentioned in here and I chose to buy an ipod (well, two actually!). I still think I made the right decision. If others want to buy something else (there are reasons, none are compelling to me though), they are welcome to - but please find other reasons to rant at me for my choice other than the TV adverts ;)

If it's clicking I'd suspect that the hard drive is damaged.

If you're out of warranty you might want to check out ukipodrepairs.com (just add www to the start of that)

I use my ipod to back up my work - 40Gb of portable storage with a free mp3 player thrown in!
